Does anyone have a chaed version of the page? Seems like the image hoster is hiding the images :(

  2. Downloadable Wikipedia on Got a Question for Wikipedia Founder Jimmy Wales? · · Score: 1

With the advances of mobile computing and storage, I think it is very relevant to create a way to download the encyclopedia (at least partially) to carry on a long trip or bus. Are there any plans to do this?

I also think that if this weapon starts to be used a lot, the fugitives will also escape into dense cities, undergroung parkings, etc because they know GPS devices cease to function there. Anyone has an idea of how the data of the device is transmited back to the police... maybe that is another thing to work around...

What about other operating systems? Do you folks at Google only use M$ s...tuff? And why not send CD-ROMs with this software to places that don't have a good internet connection?

I loved the selection of software included: Norton Antivirus, Ad-aware... I really tend to download them a lot... but you can't download only the programs you want... that sucks! Google now reminds that they are a company that aims to take over the internet...

I'm actually glad that Sony wanted to join this grup. If any company has interest in it, why not? The group will possibly grow even bigger... maybe companies like Microsoft? :P I heard Philips say "Everyone's invited", so...

  8. Freedom of Choice will hunt you forever... on Debian GNU/Solaris · · Score: 1

So you can choose to stick with majority of users by using Ubuntu with only the default applications (wich I am doing personally but not sticking with the defaults...) or you can choose to try new applications, kernels and window managers and define your personal way of interacting with a computer. There you go, again you have to choose... freedom of choice will really hunt you as soon as you use OSS.

I don't want anyone choosing for me. I think Debian is not the kind of comunity to choose for anyone (maybe that's why they have so many packages and developers). You can always install Ubuntu on your machine and get an Operating System with the default configurations, but will you stick with gedit (the text editor that comes default with ubuntu)? By the way, I think you're talking more about Perl than Python don't you? http://www.thinkgeek.com/tshirts/oreillyshirts/5bc 2/back/

Just like you said it, the investment of hundreds of thousands of hours should be valued... How many hours took Sun to build the Open Solaris OS? Now that they are giving it away I think they are not getting the feedback that they deserve. I am pretty sure that there are lots of improvements that Solaris gan give to all the other flavours of Unix... and the best way to get them is by studying very well. How does this thing fit on my distro? Why is this slow, and that faster? I not trying to tell you to create a new comunitty to support the use of this new OS solely, but to offer it as a choice to anyone who wants to further learn about it.

What is the point of having 3k text editors? What is the point of having 20 window managers? Why don't you stick with only one operating system then? I look forward to see a first version of this OS and experiment it as soon as possible. Choice is one of the most valuable things Open Source Software has.

  12. Re:What if? on Google & Sun Planning Web Office · · Score: 1

The big advantage on doing this is that they don't have to create an OS! Imagine that you could login at your local office, start writting a document and open some web pages and then, after reaching home, you could access your desktop just as you left it at your desktop. With the same programs opened, same documents, same music playing!... With a portable desktop you can do that. You could also switch from different platforms: MacOS, Windows, Pocket PC, Symbian... It would just be awesome! Go ahead Google and Sun -> My two favourite enterprises united can only possibly do great things.

  13. Why not having versioning of the songs? on Outspoken Group Releases Album as Free Download · · Score: 2, Interesting

Everybody knows that creating a song is a long evolutional process, so I suggest these artists that are willing to put their work freely available on the internet (like most /. users), to create a versioning service of their songs. Their fans could choose the best cover for the album, give some advices to the order of the songs, song titles, etc. If I knewd that I had contributed to the making of an album I would definitely buy it. Think about it! (I would love see Metallica doing this...)
