  1. It's just a creditor's tactic on RIAA Recommends Students Drop out of College · · Score: 1

Although the RIAA has no reason to phone me, I got the same tactic when I was avoiding the debt collectors for about the same amount in credit card debt. I believe the bank was Capitol One, actually, whose creditor scolded me like a soot-nosed child for letting my debts accumulate like that. When I told him that I was (at the time) unemployed because I was a dedicated, full-time student at a top college, he snarkily responded: "well that tells us a lot about your priorities!" and continued to berate me for borrowing money that I refused to pay back because of my selfish, wanton thirst for higher education!

I think it's in a training manual they have to memorize...

  2. Marx was wrong? on The Creative Power of Second Life · · Score: 1

Doesn't this prove some sort of flaw in Marx's whole separation of labor theory? Maybe we should be talking about this! This is potentially huge!

  3. Re:The future is tangiable on The New Boom · · Score: 1

I wouldn't say that Yahoo! is a has-been. It still competes healthily with Google and MSN. And although Google's stock is selling for over 400 bucks a share (WHY DON'T I HAVE ANY!?), which is totally over-the-top, Yahoo is doing quite well for itself. I love the Google, and I love the Yahoo! -- because Google and Yahoo do not do the same things! They're two different services that occupy different corners of the market. For instance, Google is primarily setting itself up to be the chief pedaler of all information, whereas Yahoo! is trying to work the more social/community/networking side of things (and, as of right now, they're doing a better job than Google). I use them both, and I rely on them both, but I think Yahoo!, even though it's the dark horse, is a more reliable contender. If Google is to have a major downfall will probably be the old trying-to-reinvent-the-wheel trap that the kids in 1999 fell prey to... We shall see!

  5. Anyone see Charlie Rose last night? on Top Advisory Panel Warns Erosion of U.S. Science · · Score: 1

One of his guests was Andy Grove (Intel co-founder) who grumbled (albeit VERY SLOWLY) something to the effect of: "Science is hard-- it's not easy for a 10 year old to learn chemistry, or for a 14 year-old to do differential equations. It takes work." And that every time some asshat (can I say "asshat" on Slashdot?) calls for "Intelligent" design to be taught to kids alongside evolution, SCIENCE is being DISRESPECTED. RIGHT ON, ANDY! --harlo
