Far from it, the open access to scholarly literature movement is a long on going fight just like the Open source movement and may be derived from it. Searching "royal society" +2007 I am sure will drag up a/. feature re: Royal soc. members forcing the issue on their own publishing beaurocracy. They were by no means the first but every bit as prestigious as Harvard, this makes it incumbent on all other fonts of higher learning to take a stand one way or the other. I'm actually pretty surprised they went the way they did. It's gonna maka a hell of a difference to people like me. I dropped ~$70K over 15 years last 2 decades because I had to pay throught the nose for current thought. To save trees and bugs.

Are "we" addicted to technology??? Duuh! Technology starting with perhaps fire constitutes a metaphorical ramp up which we have been grinding slowly, with much sweat and blood for eons. There really are no guardrails on this ramp, and at this point in time the elevation of the ramp above "a normal elevation for the species" is more than adequate to ensure a terminal velocity should one fall off the sucker. I as an expert in such things recommend an immediate crash course. Try just for 1 day, eating out of a dumpster... Not up to that? Well, sleep on the back porch, don't stint yourself, use that big fluffy acrylic comforter. Maybe better would be to just give the matter a little thought. HOWEVER in this instance I see little fire tons of smoke and a bad smell. Everyone (mostly) concerned owuld be likely to agree gov't is not *wanted* however in the case of china frinstance maybe they will have to be put up with (kinda).
The last thing then that 'we' would want is to let our subliminal, kneejerk, flag saluting childhood (and beyond) conditioning to interfere with what is essentialy a people on the street vs "the man" type issue. Which point I'm sure is *clear* to all but the most immersed participants in this most caninely characterised event (anybdynoticethe s?)
So not to belabour a point, but buck up boys and girls, get it straight, Nations feed on cities feed on towns feed on countrysides. PEOPLE get short changed unless they *act* . And nature, the only really negentropic phenomenae in the visible universe has time on its side...
