  1. Open Source Internet on The Second Generation Internet · · Score: 1

Fuck all that noise! The next protocol should be open source, with complete anonymity and all the nifty features any computer user could want. We can't trust some organization funded and supported by big business to create something that will be good for individuals. This will always be around to a small degree, with little, undergound client-server combos, but there should be a BIG movement to create the next client-server metaphor to replace the lame and restricted browser. We need something that connects more fully with the rest of the OS and GUI, and would be available for all operating systems (both client and server). Something in between a web browser, hotline, and a Q3 engine. Something to really let tomorrow's internet publishers express themselves and take the user for a ride. I think chatting might become more popular as it inherites a 3D engine and allows me to sit in a conference room or couch with other people, and I can get a skin for myself (or get myself scanned or something) and see other people (with whatever skin they chose to display. The main point is, that we must be in control of the next internet.

  2. IBM mobos . . . on Darwin on Crusoe? · · Score: 1

You can get CHRP motherboards from IBM with G3 processors (G4s will come soon, as IBM has started to manufacture them). They have all the specs and parts available, with 133MHz bus, Gigabit ethernet, AGP, and more standard. The G3 is still being developed for embedded and computing purposes, and it's speed is said to increase to 550-600MHz, as well as power consumption to decrease. Wouldn't it be nice to have a sweet 600MHz G3 laptop with LinuxPPC running on it (the Mobo doesn't support the MacOS, or the other way around; this may change with OSX and Darwin, where something might be able to be hacked up . . .). I remember reading about this, but can't find any info on IBM's site about it. I hope I didn't read about it on MOSR (joke).

  3. Open Source QT Client Issues on Petition Apple for Linux QuickTime · · Score: 1

I remember reading a while back, when Apple released the source to their QT Server software, they said that they wouldn't be able to release a full open source client because QT uses some codecs that Apple is licensing from other companies. They might release a freeware client, but I doubt they can release the code for the client. But c'mon fellas, QT Server is open source, and the protocols and codecs are open standards. I'm sure someone could whip up a client for QT media . . .

  4. Mac AOL 5.0 on AOL's Upgrade of Death · · Score: 1

I have experienced no difference in the way AOL handles TCP/IP from previous versions. I am a beta tester for aol, and am using the most recent build of 5.0 (it's not out for mac yet) and I'm on a DSL connection. In fact, My computer is a gateway for my LAN, and AOL behaves like a good little client. I can even dial in my modem at the same time and connect to aol either by DSL or modem. It doesn't interfere at all with any of my other clients and server software. These problems must be limited to the Windows version of AOL.

  5. What the hell are you talking about? on Windows NT 4.0 C2 Evaluation finished · · Score: 1

Are you referring to the html source? This is readily available . . . Are you talking about the news sources (which I agree might be questionable)? How does that pertain to a web site? As for dissing products that aren't open source, that's what the readers and posters do, slashdot just presents the news tidbits that might be of interest to tech minded people. I have never seen them "dissing" any closed source products in the past.

sorry, this only works if you have a PPC box as it allows a copy of the MacOS to run natively as a process. It will probably never be available for x86.

I've found a MacOS runtime app for BeOS and linux PPC which can be found at SheepShaver.com. The linux version is in beta, and you should take it up with them to port it to linux x86. You can read all about it at their site.

  8. Re:ATI needs a whack on No Next Q3Test · · Score: 1

You're forgetting about one very important feature of the ATI cards. The reason Apple has been supporting ATI so strongly is because of 2D performance, which is important for all kinds of publishers and artists, but not so good (but sufficiently) for Gamerz. The new ATI drivers that come with MacOS 9 are much better than the previous ones, and I've been getting noticably better frame rates in all my 3D games on my modest Blue G3 300. Getting back to the issue at hand, ATI kicks 2D ass against Voodoo 3 (and voodoo 2 before that, etc) and only recently have there been other manufacturers able to match ATI in 2D performance, hence the reason Apple is shopping around.

"I mean who wants to play ANYTHING on a box with 8 megs of VRAM?!" Well, that's why it comes w/ an AGP slot, so you can toss the 8MB ATI and throw in a 16 or 32MB ATI, or a voodoo 3 card . . .

  11. Words from a long time mac user on Apple Re-Reverses G4 Order Cancellations · · Score: 1

I have been using macs for about a decade, since my parents got a Mac ][cx. I've been using only macs at home, but have used windows a lot in school and jobs. I am the current (very happy) owner of a PowerMac Blue & White G3 and I own stock in Apple. As soon as I heard what they had done, I immediately wrote a letter to leadership@apple.com (the suggestion box) and told them that if they didn't fix this action towards the people who had their orders cancelled, I was going to sell all my stock and my next computer would be a wintel. Fortunately, the next morning I read that Apple had posted a note on their site stating that they had thought it through for the night and decided to honor the orders. Apparently, I hadn't been the only one to complain.

  12. Can't we all get along on USB2 Specs Are In · · Score: 1

Of course they should coexist and they still can. Now, certain devices which worked poorly on USB 1.x (CDR, scanners, HD, Zip drives) can now work well; and firewire will still remain (especially when the speed is increased to 800Mbit to 3.2Gbit) the choice method of connecting to DV equip, higher performance hard drives, and the Playstation II of course . . . There's room for both and I'm happy that both are evolving to suit customers' needs. There's never too much speed to run a mouse, keyboard or whatever devices currently work on USB 1.
