  1. Restart Manager code here on Vista To Be Updated Without Reboots · · Score: 1, Funny

    So it contacts the restart manager, and if it says it is possible to update without restart, it doesn't restart? And if, say it returns false, then it would still have to restart. I'm betting some intern made this:

    class RestartManager {
    public boolean canUpdateWithoutRestart() {
    return false;
    }
    }

  2. More RAM on Breathing Life Into Older Computers · · Score: 0

    Last year I picked up 2 old identicle celeron 500MHz machines for free from my University when they upgraded one of their labs. Luckily they both had 256MB of RAM, and I only really needed one of them, so I use the other one for backup parts. I stuck the whole 512MB of RAM in one machine, installed Mandrake 10.1 on it (don't ask why), and the thing actually runs smoothly! I use it as a webserver for a wiki, and various other things with no noticable lag or delay. Even boot up time is decent (within 1 minute). Having a lot of RAM can really help old machines. Especially with old, slow harddrives, you don't want to be using swap space very much. Old PC100 RAM isn't even that expensive if you need to upgrade on the cheap. I imagine Damn Small Linux would work great on my server, but any distro can run decently on old machines (assuming lots of RAM and NOT using KDE. I prefer iceWM.)

  3. Re:Great, just what we need... on Firefox 3D Canvas FPS Engine · · Score: 0

    I see some amazing potential for this. Games would be the last thing that I would use the canvas for if using javascript, but the canvas can be very useful in applications. I use the canvas in Java applets quite often, and this has the potential to nearly replace the Java canvas when it comes to web apps. Think of a canvas used with our beloved new buzz-word AJAX. You can get dynamic graphs, pulling data from your server and tons of other useful things that can make your already rich web app even more rich. I know I'll be keeping my eye on this. I wouldn't think about using it for anything until it is cross-browser compliant, since I don't enjoy leaving out a chunk of my user base. Does anyone know if there are plans for a canvas in IE 7? Are there any w3 standards for it (too lazy to check right now)? Maybe in a few years we could see this really take off teamed with AJAX.

  4. released on Novell to Release 20% of Their Employees? · · Score: 5, Funny

    I sure hope they're released under the GPL... It's good to see companies like this releasing human resources though. I'm going to download some today! Anyone got a torrent?

    Oh no! Now KDE, Gnome, AND Google will be obsoleted! What is this world coming to... GORM and GUBA are taking over.
