That's the price they and apparently the market places on their office suite. OpenOffice is free, why not use that instead? Also there is the issue of perceived value. If MS sold it for less, people might think it's not as good as it used to be and perhaps not buy it. You could say the same for Photoshop, 3DSMax, Maya, Autocad, etc.

This is similar to to wine. I've read of one vineyard that charged a low amount for it's wine which caused people to think it was a cheap wine. So they didn't sell as many as they had hoped. Then they decided to raise the price. And guess what? People bought much more of it because of the perception that higher price = better wine.

Indeed. One of the experts mentions:

Pondering that quote, I really don't want the world of computing to go back to the way things were back in the early 1980s. There were so many types of computer systems and operating systems to choose from. Shall I buy a TRS-80? IBM PC? Amiga? Apple Macintosh? Atari ST? It was really annoying. Right now, we're realistically down to Windows and Mac OS (Yes, I'm typing this on a Linux machine), and that's much better than the jungle we had back then.

Microsoft is a convicted abusive monopolist (which is different from a plain old monopolist). Alright fine. Personally I don't agree that they are, especially now with the resurgance of Apple as a viable alternative. But really, compared with the old AT&T, Standard Oil, and especially the British East India Company, Microsoft is an amateur.

Except that the average Joe only sees the surface and that the "cool" kids have this new-fangle Mac thing and iPods.

Simply skinning XP with an' aqua' style skin and adding a dock does not make it anything like OS X. Any more than putting a Ferrari shell on top of a ford doesn't make it a Ferrari.

Tell that to Rolls Royce. Their cars were complete crap for several decades, but they were a Rolls, so people wanted them for some reason. Most people only go for the superficial things. That's why marketing works.

As someone pointed out earlier, if the most viable route to get stem cells is harvesting embryos, the demand will be so huge as to create an economic incentive for people to make as many of them as they can sell stem cells.

Go to your local fertility clinic. They toss out quite a few unused embryos with the remaining placed in cryopreservation. So, tossing them out or experimenting on them? Which one do you think is more useful?

If we cross that barrier, how long until we start using human stem cells to make (forgive me, Arthur) beef?

I think it would be infinitely better than what we have now: systematic massacre of semi-sentient living organisms for inefficient food. Growing edible skeletal muscle, which is what beef is, from embryos bypasses creation of a brain and other central nervous system components that are able to feel pain and other unpleasant stimuli during the manufacture of beef and other edible animal foodstuffs.
