The simple thing is this. H1-B's comming to the US buy a car, house, TV, etc, etc. Bottom line they have to spend a lot when the move here. Its cheaper from the governments point of view to let the US workers sit and collect unemployment while keeping a steady flow of H1-Bs comming in and then kicking them out once their 6 year term is up.

Purely from an economic point of view, H1-B's are a net positive.

As opposed to which of the several mega corporations that don't look towards customers as a source of income? Does using OSS software damage your brain? It looks like we're getting closer to knowing the answer.

MS provides a service/product/yada yada that works for 90% of the desktop user base. A majority of them don't pay/upgrade. They just get it with their new computer. They don't give a shit how much individual OEM license costs. They are busy using their computer.

I think MS should start a consulting service for the OSS monkeys to show them how to write a decent OS and how to market it.

While Slashdot is sitting and pointing fingers at windows, they just sold thousands of copies of windows, office, exchange, visual studio, etc. Keep at it, and 0.91% market share is well deserved.

Even shuttle worth agrees linux on the desktop is a total failure right now. How much longer will he pay for this shit? IBM is already weary about paying for linux on the desktop...

Editing the registry by hand to fix things.. wow.

Fix what? There are all ready tools for any settings the registry holds.

Dowloading executable files directly from the internet in order to install things ... double wow.

You mean how 90% of people on this planet install stuff?

No central means to keep all software up to date? You need to install extra security software that "works" by checking the machine AFTER it has been breached? How mind-numbingly stupid is all that? Did the package management revolution leave Windows behind?

Yeah. The revolution of 1% of the users. Nice revolution. FAIL revolution.

Central place for all software? LOL nice pipe dream. Download 6GB games? WOW thats fucking insane. Only can come out of the lunatics in FOSS camp.

And MS registry doesnt have a place to store this. They use a flat file too: %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

if anything, vista has helped apple computer become even more popular as a consumer brand, and if you are banking on windows 7 being any better than vista, well... nothing is impossible, but all the snow in hell won't stop microsoft from being microsoft... they've done things the same basic way since they were founded... windows 95 was bad, win 98 better, win me was bad, win2k/xp better, vista was bad, windows 7 will be better, windows 8 will suck, then windows 9 will get it Wow.. Did you do you "research" from polling your 5 co-workers and 2 friends? I guess people expect Microsoft to write drivers for their video card too.

When Apple starts testing OSX on 300 different CPU configurations , 500 different motherboards, 150 different kinds of ram, 2000 different hard disks, 50 different sound cards, 300 different monitors, then we can have a talk, about who can produce better quality software. :)

i was reading a review site the other day, and directx9 ran almost everything faster than directx 10. yet another reason to avoid vista. Lol.. "directx" is not slower, the games written are. you're too stupid to waste time explaining anything more than that.

While you continue to troll on slashdot, microsoft keeps on raking up billions in revenue. If thats the definition of "in trouble" , "doomed" or other phrases the fine folk here come up with, I'd like to be "doomed" too :)

Why dont you get off your ass, learn programming if yout dont know already, help out some OSS project. Volunteer to work on the open office team. I guess bitching is more productive..

Apple, um, customer oriented? I suppose they abandoned the profit making model most companies go for then...
I cannot refute that they do make popular products that people buy in large numbers, but, your reasoning behind why they do it is totally naive. They too like MS want to lock-in people in their business model. Since they don't have deep enough pockets, they probably couldn't function as MS does. Steve Jobs is the most ruthless businessman out there, if you don't think so as any Apple Manager.

Heres a few tidbits to think about
    > iphone = lock-in = Buy expensive apps from Apple/ATT. (even though the iPhone is cracked now, selling 3rd party apps is illegal - they released the details about web apps (over their crappy non-3g-conection) at the last moment even though they knew it months ago)
    > Lying about performance figures. Apple has consistently lied about PowerPC performance figures (http://lowendmac.com/hodges/06/0817.html)
    > Lying about Product Features. (http://blogs.business2.com/apple/2007/05/behind_t he_appl.html)
    > Apple routinely marks up retail prices of *all* their hardware products to maximize profit. Often much much higher than products with similar components (Note: They do *not* use any higher quality components (yes, anyone can get that silvery apple finish, i'm sure apple would just sue other companies if they did) than other manufactures. Besides manufacturing all their h/w products in China.)
    > iTunes + iPod + Fairplay(or no Fairplay) = vendor lock-in?
    > OSX lock-in w/ the Mac H/W (intel) . I payed for the OS, I have compatible hardware, I should be able to do whatever I want with it.
