  1. Re:Privacy Geek on Anonym.OS a Boon for Privacy Geeks? · · Score: 3, Insightful

I think if you have a letter in an envolope, you have phone line encrypteded (or if it is a line not connected to the larger standard grid), or you are using encryption/SSL on the internet you can expect protection from warrentless searches and privacy. But I don't think you should always expect a phone conversation to be private (it is insanely easy for someone else inside the same house/building to pick up onto the same line) especially wireless or cell phones (you can listen to cell phone conversations with $30 worth of gear from radioshack). Likewise with the amount of servers your queries may run through I don't think you should expect privacy on the internet. And with a unsealed letter you shouldn't expect that no one will read it (like a post-card).

    I qoute the 4th ammendment:
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Searching and seizing needs to be limited to private places and things, otherwise police can't arrest anyone anywhere without a warrant or confiscate drugs in public parks.

Everyone is entitled to some degree of privacy.

I agree with this completely. I believe that degree should be your effects and property (so your house, computer, car, goods, etc.). I don't think you should expect privacy on the telephone (look at the first telephone networks -anyone on the network could listen in) or on e-mail (because again it is so easy to grab off of a network) or basically anything external. I do think the government should have to have a warrant to use any data they collect, but as long as they aren't spying inside of my house, car, computer, or personal effects I don't care. I expect any telephone/internet isn't secure (I do think mail should be secure though, as long as it is a sealed envelope or box, not postcards).

No, it would be more like if Barnes and Noble kept track of every book you picked up in their store, then made suggestions at the counter of stuff you may be interested in. If you play the song somewhere else iTunes is oblivious. Personally I don't see this as a bad thing. I don't think there is anything damning or embaressing about my music, and I don't mind sharing what I am currently listening to (and I don't think many people do, judging by the features being added to most IM software now).

Only in movies, not in live theater (which this is). In live theater if you try to adlib you are quickly dropped (actors usually memorize the ends of lines of others to know when to give their line, so if someone adlibs it can throw the other actors off). If Steve had multiple takes I'm sure he would do the same as the movie actors you cite.
