  1. offer both.. metric = 1/3rd the size and... on How Can We Convert the US to the Metric System? · · Score: 1

As soon as kids enter high school they'll start ordering pints instead of 40's

Engine sizes have been metric for years... people talk about the legandary "5.0" for example... only a few holdouts will call it a 302...

speed? do the canadian thing... put the US system 2/3rds larger or something w/the metric equiv beneath it... which all auto gauges do anyway...

people would think fuel were cheaper if it were 1.39$/litre instead of 3.00$/gallon... they'd see the 1.39$ and shit themselves... if your ig'nant enough to drive a hummer you probably won't notice...

distance... this trips people up the most... if they stopped teaching little kids the us system and had them use the metric system first.... by the time their old enough to start really caring all the signs will use both... and while we're at it lets teach thems spanish and mandarin as well...

when I was in elementary school we learned both systems... but it wasn't until high school that anybody followed up on that... chemistry & physics were probably the first time the metric system was touched upon... and between those times everything had been related to me in miles/gallons/lbs... so the metric bit had fallen out of use...

I use the metric system now when I know I'm going to have to do some kind of conversion... but then again I've been converting mpg-->knots for years so I'm used to it.

I'm pissed that I need two sets of tools though.

  2. Gov't to use nextel network on First Responder Networks 5 Years After 9/11 · · Score: 1

I was told by a friend @ sprint that once sprints walkie talkie technology is as good as the nextels click to talk sprint will be selling/leasing the nextel network entirely to the US Gov't.

While some say coverage on nextels is poor (which it is) the click to talk part is always right on. we are able to use it in the basement tunnels at our location with decent performance... phone calls are another matter.

this technology has matured over the years to almost a point of perfection according to some... once sprint gets their system up to par... the gov't will have exclusive use of nextels network.... and will be able to (hopefully) rebuild their first responder system based upon nextels technology.... once its in gov't hands I would assume coverage would improve... and by standardizing they would be able to deploy one type of antenna to a disaster area and have everybody on the same page.

this system works for an entire country full of contractors... so I'd imagine it'd have more than enough bandwith/channels for the gov'ts use.

    my 2 cents

I had some system error-esque windows that said I was using a pirated or not licenesed copy of windows xp for a while... I actually did get a license for windows... I dunno, it was kind of a pain when your watching a movie w/a bunch of people... the divx movie says property of so and so studios... and the system messages say illigetimet copy of windows... "hey... do you pay for f*cking anything?"

  4. maybe a breakup would have been better for msft on Apple Joins BAPCo · · Score: 1

consider the fact that microsoft makes their money off of office and not windows. windows is a way of keeping their company dominant in the pc market and insuring that office would stay on top.

the interesting thing about all of this is that a breakup of the company would probably been beneficial to microsofts innovation... right now microsoft is putting people from their office team, as well as their xbox team in an effort to boost up the production on vista... if they had been forced to break up these divisions they would never have had the coroporate bloat that is drowning vista, as well as other msft products.

the xbox is a perfect example of this: they created an entirely seperate division for the xbox team. they were givin the ability to create their own corporate culture seperate from microsoft, and they created an excellent product... one must wonder what the companies products would have been like if they had been forced to seperate their divisions into say windows, office, networking, etc.
