When Gabe is saying that Apple is the primary competitor, it looks to me more that Steam wants to compete in the smart TV segment more than Apple is bringing a console to market. There are a lot of smart TV devices attempting for market domination, but I just do not see any achieving TiVo status, none seem to bring anything revolutionary to the table.
With this mindset, I now expect XBMC to be in Steam's Greenlight and available for Linux shortly. Make it happen.
I use Spideroak, and their business model is based on privacy and they try to support open source when viable. When most cloud providers are similar, this is the featureset that sways my choice.
Sometimes you can find a laptop with a broken LCD on ebay or similar. Lots of things can be broken on a laptop which render it non-functional as a laptop, however still functional as a server (onboard wifi for example).
Could the internet eventually be replaced with a mesh network? Maybe because I'm in student housing right now, but without the internet, we'd probably go about setting up an Ad-Hoc network in our building, then expand that to others we want to talk to (like a cantenna to the university buildings across the way). Sure, I wouldn't be able to post on Slashdot, but I could probably scrounge up enough movies to keep playing for a couple of years. Porn on the other hand, we'd have to get creative.
I figured this out a few years ago while watching IPods grow. I bought my first PDA with playing music in mind. I quickly found a few problems:
PDA's don't have HDD's at all (Already said)
Volume control SUCKS!!! With headphones on, the lowest setting was yelling in my ears.
However there are some features in my PDA that I love and I won't buy an mp3 player until they are included:
SD disks, really easy file transfers, back up your camera on a HDD.
WiFi, expecially with city wide coverage, streaming internet radio on the go is becoming a reality.
File browser, I don't sort my songs by genra, but instead by what folder they are in.
Replaceable battery, I'm ok with a 4 hour battery life as long as I can switch out the battery for a fresh one.

Keep in mind that hydrogen burns clear, so it will be pretty hard for the officer to discover the fire
