  1. Re:This is why Republicans want small government on Anti-P2P College Bill Moving Through House · · Score: 1

I'm glad I'm not the only one that sees the real problem behind this.

The federal government never should have gotten involved in funding schools. If the states wanted a national body to set standards for education, they should have formed their own - not relied on the federal government. Education should not be subjected to this corporate political bullshit.

Further, if a state does not accept national funding for some project, then that state's population should not be required to pay taxes to support said project. It is utterly mind blowing how many rights states are giving up to the federal government.

If people around the world dramatically cut back on their daily electronic entertainment dosage, the world would probably be a better place. Energy demands would fall slightly. People might start reading (perhaps even non-fiction). Average intelligence might rise.

Then again, this is all just a pipe dream. We live in a society where it is "cooler" to [get drunk/play video games] than to do something intellectually challenging.

Hopefully there isn't a "smart" gene (beyond some set mean and standard deviation). Otherwise, we are all in for a future similar to that depicted in Idiocracy.

I would argue that the intelligent but misguided (I.B.M. for short (purely coincidental, i assure you)) are the true source of the problem, but that the ignorant are the tool by which the I.B.M.s achieve their rank of power.

The type of people I would vote for happen to be the type of people who would not lie (or simply cover part of the truth) to get public support. Unfortunately, lying seems to work pretty damn well on the general populace, as they just can't tell the difference (how do you distinguish a lie from truth, when you have no alternative source of information?).

The problem with requiring some kind of test to be able to vote is, how can you possibly separate people interested in the common good from those interested only in themselves just by asking them a few questions?

Now, to be on topic of the debate. I think this is a great idea. What ever happened to well educated (on multiple topics) politicians? May I remind you that Ben Franklin (perhaps one of our most important founding fathers) made very novel advances in science?

I would have to agree with you.

Mainly because I believe the real problem is the people who think their way is the only truth.

I'm a strong atheist, and have only become more so in the past few years. I (like everyone else) sometimes find myself angry at others for their beliefs. However, I try my best to stay calm and logical any time a heated discussion comes up. When we let ourselves get angry, it only builds barriers that become harder and harder to break down.

The best thing to do is to step back, and imagine yourself in the other persons shoes. See it from their perspective. Only then can you give a calm and useful explanation for why you see it differently.

The people who let their emotions get the best of them are the people that are going to suck no matter what religious views they have. Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Atheist... It doesn't matter, as long as you have a reason for believing what you believe, and let other people have their own reason for believing what they believe.

This is exactly the point I am trying to get across. The fact of the matter is that the police officers walking around with MP5s aren't really there to catch people. They are there to deter people. Any time they see someone walking by them carrying something that "looks like it could have been a bomb" they should probably not get to worried. The people they should be worried about are the people holding inconspicuous objects, possibly looking really nervous.

Until we can build commercial fusion power plants, we should be building fission plants to supplant all of the coal and natural gas power plants. With enough fission plants our energy concerns would be all but dead. We would have plenty of fuel to last us until we can perfect fusion.
