This is the critical issue. Who decides what is child porn? Is there a jury of peers? What due process does the site owner get? How can you get removed from the blacklist? If people are wanking off at pics of kids in bathing suits, does that constitute child porn and receive a block?
These are important questions in the implementation of any law that might impinge free speech.
It's a good thing if you live where the broadband is. For the rest of us in the boonies, it sucks. The City govt. is about our only hope of getting broadband because there are only about 2000 people in our town. The local telecom provider won't provide DSL, citing not enough profit and the local cable company is a mom and pop who does not have the funds to upgrade their cable equipment to digital.
From the article: "MediaMax CD-3 is a collection of technologies that provides copy management for optical media, while simultaneously enhancing and expanding the consumer's experience."
Could someone please explain to me how DRM "enhances the consumer's experience?" Do your CDs sound better with it?
The most important thing no one has mentioned is business cards. You will get more work by word of mouth than any advertising medium. Pass out a couple to all of your happy customers and they will recommend you to their friends. They don't have to be fancy, but a name and a contact number is important.
Don't buy expensive tools until you need them for a project. I have bought plenty of tools that I never use.
There is more money for small and medium business, but as a high school student you will probably do better with home users, unfortunately. They are the worst. Write up a document that lists your "Terms of Service" that spells out things. One suggestion is that customers must have their data backed up before you arrive unless they specifically asked you to back it up, and then you get to charge them for it.
When you get out of school and want to consult for businesses, you should try to get them on maintenance contracts. That has worked well for me.
"Plus, I have fun with my OS, and Linux is *fun.* MS-Windows hasn't been fun for years"
I totally agree with that. In 1997 I had just about given up on the computer career after 15 years because Windows was driving me crazy. It was no fun anymore. Linux re-ignited my interest in computers and has made it more exciting for me.
For example, they have these teams "collobarate" to write a paper. The team lead, gets to write the introduction, each person gets a specific section in the body, and another poor sap gets the conclusion. What a stupid way to write a paper. The team lead is on easy streat writing a one paragraph into, each person writes something so so so so specific, as to not learn/grasp anything, or even learn how to structure an essay, and the schmuch who got stuck with the conclusion, ends up spending hours trying to cohesively tie everything together.
I go to UOP Online. The team projects are not directed to behave as you indicate. The team can decide how to proceed to complete the assigned project, which is not always just a paper, but may include a web site, Powerpoint presentation, etc. The team decides how to organize. Just because you get one bad team doesn't mean the whole system is flawed.
I like what I am getting from UOP, but I must admint that I am taking an MIS program and have worked in IS for 20 years, so the material is not that new to me. If I were just out of high school, online college would not be the place for me.
Also, there are alot of advantages to the newsgroup format. If they wouldn't use MS proprietary protocols, you could go to school with any computer. Your postings are there for all to see so there are no arguments about what and when you posted. Lively conversations are sparked frequently, similar to/..
An online education is not for everyone, but some of us are mostly looking for the piece of paper and not seeking new knowledge. In regular college classes the education is not much better as some teachers don't know a mouse from a hole in the head. With UOP most of my professors have been IT professionals currently in the industry. They don't teach full time. This can be an advantage also.
Like any other tool, computer use must be aligned with the objectives of the organization. As a systems analyst for small business, I see this all of the time. Many businesses have enough technology, it is just not applied correctly.
Does that mean I think teachers should be computer gurus? Absolutely not! If they increased the number of computers in the schools by a factor of X did they increase the number of techies, analysts and etc by the same factor? I doubt it. In some of the school systems here there is one PC tech for the school system and he hardly has the experience to adequately evaluate system implementation strategies. And none of the authority! These are key components. You can't just dump complex tools on a society, such as a school, and expect them to use the tools to maximum potential from some innate genetic skill.
Obviously you have had mom and dad looking out for you.. Or maybe you are from one of those countries that has government provided school through college. Can you say H1-B visa? You are probably the reason we are out of work.
What do you mean move on? Die?!!? So if you can't get a job you should what??
Some of us tried to get degrees in the recession of the early eighties. There were not all of the loan programs and grants and scholarships there are now. If I tried to work at minimum wage, I didn't have enough time to keep my grades up. If I studied enough to keep grades, I couldn't afford to eat and have a roof. Sometimes it is not a choice, but I gather you are too young to know about those things.
I have a two year degree and am 20 hrs from my BS. I paid for every semester hour myself and worked , until I got laid off last year, during every class I took. I have over 20 years of computer experience. I started programming in 1976 on DEC 10. I can work circles around a new grad.
You don't know what you are talking about. When was this degree gettin' "good"???? When does someone "decide" not to get a degree? When it is pay for tuition or pay for food. Not everyone had such opportunities so shut the $(!#%& up!
Amen. I live in Austin and have been out of work for 18 months. I have skills!!! I have experience!! I just don't have any money to move somewhere else.
If it was not compatible, would you call it Ethernet? No, you would call it OCX or Invisiband or something else. Why should companies totally revamp thier development for an architecture that is not known or proven in the industry, (at least to the PHBs). This way they only need to develop some new encapsulation and timing routines, and yur half way home.
I worked for a computer manufacturer, and we sold plenty of low end computers we didn't make squat on. The reason is some marketing gobbledygook called "branding." They figure if you use their cheapo computer at home you will recommend that your business computer (ka-ching!) will be their brand.
Computer manufacturing and marketing is very different from automobiles. At least at this point in the market.
Where do you get that Linux distros "force" you to upgrade? I have a firewall running RH 5.0. I haven't upgraded anything on it for years. It works, I leave it alone.
I have paid for several distros and am happy to pay a fair price to support my favorite. I just bought a copy of Mandrake and Slackware this weekend because I needed some features of both. I am even more likely to buy something that comes with source code. I believe in free code, but not free beer. (Someone has to pay for the beer).
I had a Palm III for three years. It is my external memory. I use it as a tool every day and would have difficulty functioning without it. I have also had a Compaq C140+ and a HP200lx (yeah DOS!) and now I bought a Clie and i really like it. Having unlimited memory is great and it is not that hard to move stuff from the stick to internal memory and back. Also there is an app called MSgate that will load and unload apps automagically if you need. The screen is sharp and the quality is good. I only have the monochrome version, I haven't seen the color version in the US. I like the back light better than my old Palm, ( I know it was old and newer models have better screens). I was going to buy a VIIx but I looked at the wireless costs and they were prohibitively expensive. They charge on a per kb basis.
Compaq's servers have Wake on Lan support in the imbedded network cards, but I don't think the servers will support APM. But if you have a server that really could benefit from APM, I suggest you look at the Professional Workstations. I bet they have APM and they are as good as the low end servers. Some even have Xeon processors.

I must say that I contribute to the IE stats, but in my own defense, my company makes me use it; but I take a shower when I get home from work.;-)
I have two Compaq Laptops running Linux. I have a Prosignia and an Armada. Yes, there were some problems with the graphics at first, but most were fixed with XFree86 3.3.6 and of course, 4.0. Other stuff works great.
I have had an experience I believe falss into this area. I have recently gotten a cable modem because there is no DSL in my area. Time Warner makes me buy cable TV as well in order to have the cable modem. I have DSS and did not want the cable television programming, since it boosts the total cost to about $90 per month. The woman at Time Warner that I spoke to said the cable modem won't work without the TV programming, but I know that is not true. Also, the guy that installed it brought the data in on one cable and the TV programming in on a separate cable to keep down the noise on the line.
The customers don't choose to buy quality, they buy the first on the market with the new sparkly things on it. My company makes some very good products, but the best technology never makes it. Why else would so many people run Winbloze?
These people will get better treatement from the states. One of the big advantages of the Libertarian platform is that the money we send to the Fed will go to local and state projects where it can be better managed and go to the people who need it. This will also cut down on the governmental overhead. We won't have to pay someone to collect our federal taxes just to give it back to the states anyway.

Absolutely, this is a mismanaged network. Any network with this level of critical service requirement should be better design.
I agree. The Zaurus would be great if it was just for MP3s. I highly recommend Dlink 802.11 CF card! Lot's of fun surfing the web on your Z!

Bottom line - I LIKE MY CLIE.
My compaq flat panel is great! Uses less power than a CRT also.
