That's because the world is like a spectrum. There are those who have evolved and can see how not everything may be done for money, how doing something the best you can and ensuring that noone else has to do it again (at least for a while) and waste their energies on it, (and hence preserve world energy in general) moves some people in an amazing way.
Number of people who understand that are on the narrow ends of the spectrum. The masses haven't reached these realizations yet. Maybe someday.
I am just a bit disappointed they chose to do a moon mission. US landed on the moon in 1969. Choosing something different, even a Mars mission or something feasible but on the same scale, even if it took another 5-10 yrs would probably be better from the morale/enthusiasm perspective of the country since it wouldn't be outdated.
Yes its true that there are many opportunities in Asia now, let me talk specifically about India. The population may help in some respects but its a big problem as well. Most of India's population is in rural areas and is still quite poor.
I think 8 yrs before America wasn't looked at as badly as it is now, was it? Some bad decisions (by politicians and by Americans by electing those politicians+Wall St and whatever else) marred America's view and economy. But that doesn't mean it isn't still a great country. I am sure American will bounce back and my faith in America comes not from the politicians but from the hard-working and sincere American people (and Yes there are quite a few).
Not to undermine that India is going to do well nonetheless since the youth in India are waking up now, but there's still a lot of inertia.
To put things in some perspective, I am an Indian who's been in the US since a while.
I agree. This is a very serious issue. Wonder what can be done to stop things from getting to that point (the point where genetic predisposition for a crime is used to search through the db to identify potential criminals).
Any ideas?
I think you are confusing with fear nature's mechanism of preventing unwanted or bad things from happening to us. For example the impulse to not touch something very hot is instilled in us. (think abt when you are taking your hand near a hot iron)
Fear as we know it, is not a good thing. Or maybe you could categorize differently psychological fear as that of nightmares or of imaginary creatures, or of an exam or of bungee jumping or the fear of getting out in baseball.
I still don't think this research is anywhre near the bounds of being employed practically. There is a lot that is unknown to us about psychology, mind and fear and until things become very clear, this should NOT be used practically.
We don't know the consequences of inhibiting this chemical or gene or whatever it is.
Of course, we should keep on researching more but not only in the area of genetic or molecular biology but also in the area of thought/mind/psychology, the hows and whats of fear.
I agree with you and your spirit and would like to say that I hope in 30 yrs, instead of changing the system now to delete data which may be taken out of context later, we as humans would have changed to not take such data out of context...to understand that past, present and the potential future, all is US but thats not all we are.
Recently there has been reported a profileration in decapitation of citizens, mostly in the at of 12-28. Some attribute this to the dead horseman from sleepy hollow...a few have hinted it maybe be something to do with the new defense rule of securing iPods via brainwaves...
I don't think anyone who gets admission in an IIT will decline it due to unavailability of the Internet during night times. Having said that, I think this move sucks on the college's part. I can guarantee, students who are misusing the internet or wasting their time, will do so no matter what, be it via the internet or not.
Imagine an entity observing the earth's evolution from far. Not a very intelligent entity, certainly not one that can see the future:
Scene 1: Earth has just come out of the big bang, there is only mud, water, fire and rocks:
Entity: What a desolate place! There can never be anything else here
a few million years later:
Scene 2: Plant life arises on earth
Entity: Wow! Well okay. Green things that stay where they are...thats what earth is and ever will be.
Another few eons later:
Scene 3: Animal life evolves
Entity: Wow, what are these things! I could never imagine. Stupid apes although, swining on trees, eating each other, fighting. Never will they be anything better and finally end in a disastrous end of their race.
Scene 4: Reason develops, human life emerges:
Entity: Hmm Intelligent beings, but still with so many flaws. Diseases, death, not even full knowledge, but only a semblance of knowledge. Reason but no ability to see the future or know, others' or even ones' own thoughts. Humans are destined to die.
Scene 5: ??? What's next? I know there is something unlike the entity above.
Impatient Disbelieving entity or patient believer? It's your choice.
Coming from an AC...even so, if you really believe in what you say, I say you go get vaccinated against all the cancers and STDs and whatever else is out there and vaccinations are available for TODAY.
(Personally, for the good of your own body, I would advise you not to do that.)
Yes... lets do it! Lets vaccinate everybody...and then once its done, we will vaccinate them again, against the diseases that come forth from the previous vaccination (which of course wouldn't have happened otherwise). I mean the long-term effects.
It is well known that any so-called cure of something like cancer or such a disease (or for that reason any unnatural medicine) has side-effects. Some small, some large. For example, radiation to cure cancer actually increases the probability of some other cancers, introduces problems in progenies (or the possibility thereof).
Lets pollute the bodies of young people with medicines most of them may never need!
Bravo!!
Until the law as well as the society rises from the normal sub-human almost, notion that a person is the same throughout his life, the problem you have mentioned will disallow such a device/practice to be successful for the reasons you have mentioned.
One needs to acknowledge the 'fact' that people change, very frequently, depending on the individual's pace of evolution. Some in a few years, some take a lifetime but some are changing drastically daily.
Which means that what I recorded about myself ('lets say' about my violent tendencies), may not be true after a year. I may be a totally different person, like really 'someone else'.
Society/law have to recognize and understand this.
So you would try to make some money off it. Firstly, that is not what corporations think. When you are patenting something, you are not making *some* money off it, but your plan is to milk it till it has any juice.
Secondly, you found something yeah?? Where ther fuck did you find it from? If you go back to the basics you will realize that ideas do not belong to people. They are simply there. In so far that the idea may not even have come to you from your mind but from someone elses! (You find this bizarre? That doesn't surprise me for most people don't try to go beyond a certain point in things).
Many a time it has been debated that ideas don't really belong to anyone. If somehow your instrument (in this case your physical brain) caught it, doesn't mean it is 'yours'! But if you don't understand it yet, you won't realize it (until you do). Hopefully you will someday.
I don't care who wrote this article. Gene patents are a horrendous idea. If you take them away, not only will research thrive but it will be faster than before, because sharing of information will lead those who have found something, to go on to find something newer. Even if you take the practical concerns which many will have (for example, paying the hard work of the researchers who actually found this gene) away.
It is 'a' gene. Not my gene or your gene. The info belongs to humanity and not to a person. Even the idea of owning it brings a bitter taste to the mouth.
I understand what you mean. It breaks the heart that someone may uncover some biological info about human beings as a race and then just hide it from humans itself. Okay, so you were fortunate (or even hard-working) enough to be able to find this information. Does that give you the right to keep it from the rest of the race? After all, isn't it the genetic info that corresponds to all us humans???
It's like saying, I've found the cure for aids but I will not give it out to anyone else even though it would take me more time to make it work for people.
abhorable.
I really have to point out to you that the theory of the universe is constant was "NOT" created by Jains. Jains branched off Hindus and the vedas (and later the upanishads), all date well before Jainism started. And there are the things that you mention as well as more already there since the Vedic era and later in the upanishads too, and then of course in the Gita that takes all these things, assimillates them and adds on to them its own concepts too.
Yes. That statement of the article is not only ridiculous but also infuriating. I don't understand where these people are coming from who give such ridiculous statements. Do they have no understanding of human behavior at all?? Not even the basic understanding of how much things like trust, empathy, sympathy play in the successful working of an org?? And yes, I work in a corp org and along with being a programmer I am also a team-lead and I realize that the biggest issue in leading a software team is about the individual personalities of your team-members and by giving them understanding and trust (genuine of course and not done as a sham) can actually be much better even from the work's point of view.
I firmly believe this.
That doesn't say anything to me. The fact is that if you get into a car crash, there are chances that you may survive. In an airplane, thats it! End of Story! No second chances!
Maybe that is the cause of the fear, don't you think? And a legitimate one at that.
Given a choice would you rather be in a car crash or a plane crash, the consequnces of both aren't disclosed to you yet?
Precisely. People take terms like "Consciousness", which mean totally different things for different kinds of people and for most people it doesn't even hold a meaning (since most haven't pondered about it). To talk about anything even faintly human, or even animal, in terms of consciousness, one needs to include the physical, vital, emotional, mental and the spirit (which many people may call an inner-daemon, guide or just feeling).
At least the author needs to provide a definition of what he means by consciousness.
That is true, as in the words of Aurobindo Ghosh, "One man's perfection can still change the world".
I am just a bit disappointed they chose to do a moon mission. US landed on the moon in 1969. Web, Internet, Web 2.0 whatever. Nobody fathomed what it would become when it first started and its hard to predict what it will evolve into.

I like the idea but if the 'crop goes bad', it would create chaos. Unless there is a good backup system.

A huge waste of time, money and resources, and possibly an economic breakdown.
Exactly the way we know that the egg came first and not the chicken...oh wait...or was it the chicken first...or the egg...!!
I think it knows the words but we don't understand them...
