  1. Re:Once again we have to ask... on VMware-Microsoft Battle Looming · · Score: 1

Wit Gigabit LANs, big PC HDs, differential rsync etc, caching a gig or so on a user PC is not a problem these days.

But that's not the point - you said deploying TS would be cheaper than a VMware package for a single windows app. That's ridiculous! I roll out TS and Citrix professionally for corporate clients as part of my job and they're great technologies in the right situation, but they do not come cheap.

Especially compared to a free VM package any level 1 helpdesker could slap together in a half day.

If companies have a software product THEY NEED that only runs on Windows it would be FAR CHEAPER and easier to install a cheap Windows server and let users run that application via terminal services. Also a lot easier to deploy and support than mass amounts of VMs scattered throughout the offices. Terminal services? Cheaper?! Compared to what, an ESX server made out of diamonds?

Microsoft's TS licensing for a decent number of users is extortionate. A VMware player package on some central network share would be free and far more supportable, being totally copyable, deletable & restorable as flat files.

Except that right-click-run-as doesn't work on MSI files.

Time to either train Mom on using command-line runas, or right-click-run-as on IE in the quick launch (not the desktop, mom!), hope Mom 'gets' that this IE window and this window only has special install powers, remember to open the folder list somehow with the View menu, rebrowse to the same location, assuming the admin account has permissions on her profile folders and start the MSI from there.

I'm no fan of GFI and actively recommend that people don't go anywhere near their Mail Security product (the AV scanner), which with every release seems to be fighting a losing battle against critical bugs that delete your CEO's e-mail. I just wish GFI could keep the releases in QA a bit longer, or hey, maybe start a QA department....

However, Mail Essentials is the best spam filter I've seen. Users almost hug you with delight once the bayesian filter gets switched on. It integrates in exchange neatly, users 'get' how to use the public folders easily, and it even uses Outlook's junk e-mail folder! It's pretty damn good. Just don't expect Mail Security or Web Monitor to be anywhere near as good. Because they're shit.

That said, I suspect part of the problem is Irish BB's implementation of Ripwave - even their premium services have severe problems, so who knows? The Aussies may luck out.
