I prefer browsing a large number of websites to get different perspectives. Given my wide ranging and eclectic tastes, I prefer the advertising model for funding those sites because there would be too many to pay if I paid for each one.
I suspect there are more people like me than you. The current model works for us, even if it does not work for people like you who think advertising professionals are 'sickening' and that google is 'ruined' and 'USELESS JUNK'.
Without those ads, there would not be the high number of news sites available for viewing breaking news stories that can drive this Jacko level of interest.
If these are cheap to make and then I'd like to be able to pick one up on the way home from work and plug it in to my pool heater when I get home. Imagine heating your pool to 85F for the weekend for about $5.
There is risk to funding this drilling. There is greater risk of global instability if we remain addicted to foreign oil consumption and greenhouse gas emitting energy sources. The path we are on today creates endless war in the middle east, getting chummy with tyrants, and global warming.
The real problem here is that best of breed software developers have too many great opportunities that are more inline with their passions to work on this backwater payroll system. This leaves the unmotivated drones managed by Dilbertesque managers to run with this ball.
If I were MSFT, I'd be worried about the weak rule of law in Russia. It is highly likely that there is pre-determined outcome in the mind of the Russian officials running this case and any 'investigation' will be a show trial leading to that pre-determined outcome.
I have visited Russia many times. Might makes right. It is a system that breathes on graft and corruption.
Does this mean they'll stop serving asparagus on the Space Station? I doubt this fancy pants purification process could get rid of that smell from the urine.
I agree with Le Guin. Let's make copyright voluntary as an opt-in for the creator of the art work in question. Le Guin will choose to copyright and Doctorow will choose to waive copyright. You as a consumer have to right to consume the works under the terms set by the creator and you are free to choose not to.
Imagine a society where personal transportation via cars is available with zero emissions and cheap enough for every human who wants this. Perhaps this Dueterium thing is the path.
Should the judges turn off NPR whilst driving to work? Should the judges avoid watching TV? Should the judges stop reading newspapers? Should the judges not look at bumper stickers? Should the judges live alone?
Most urban broadband users in the USA have 2 choices for ISP, cable and DSL/Fiber. Close on their heels is white space spectrum, 4G wireless, etc. They will begin to compete on availability and quality of service. If there are brownouts on one then they will lose the customers that flock to their competitor. The invisible hands of the free market have got this one covered. You can go back to your streaming video now and stop worrying.
AOL based their entire business on local dial up and they had no plan for transitioning to broadband. Any fool can see that in 2009 and their valuation at the time of the merger looks silly in hindsight.
Where do we see the same thing today? How about Twitter and Facebook? We've detected some outrageous valuations but there is no plan for either to move to becoming a self sustaining business.
States rights is an 18th century anachronism. This is especially true in the 21st century internet age. How can Minnesota possibly enforce this? The boundary line between Minnesota and Wisconsin means nothing in 2009.
I did not say this was an easy thing to ponder. I am quite aware that my current and enjoyable way of life is made possible by the wars of the past. However, I just could not make myself use my best abilities to create weapons and then hand those weapons over the people I do not trust. I probably sound sanctimonious. I would still like to hear from a weapons maker here.
There must be a lot of software written for systems like the Predator C Avenger. Are there any readers here who work on weapons systems like this? How did you decide to devote the best years of your life to creating weapons with this degree of lethality? Do you trust your customers to use them in morally just ways?
I'm curious because when I was initially ready for high tech employment, I made a conscious decision to not directly contribute to weapons related work. In the 80's, this took away a significant number of prospective employers. Now it is more than 20 years later and I am glad I made that choice.
Consumer's relationship with Amazon is voluntary. If Amazon does too much of this, consumers will avoid them. The Kindle would not be selling if this was a reasonable concern shared by lots of consumers. It is not, so Kindle is selling. This is only happening because Amazon has a good record of customer satisfaction, established through years of effort to put the customer first.
You disagree about the value of the comment section. You frequent the comment section. How ironic. You must spit at the mirror a lot. Can you get through a shave in one piece?
I don't have to cross reference anything because I am happy with Google. You are the one with the problem.
If Google is so bad, then why don't you start a rival search engine. If you are right then people will flock to you.
You can just quit cable if you don't like. If there are enough people like you then things will change.

I agree. If I am a news site and you are an ad server company, you must serve my ads in 20ms or you refund my advertisers.
What do you think pays for those servers that keep Google, cnn.com, and others up and running?

It sounds to me like you are apologizing for the Iran government's efforts to limit reporting on the demonstrations there. Why would you do that?
Why do you hate the ACLU with a passion?

Why are blogs special?

If you really are CTO, then why do you put up with this from HR? They are only there to serve your needs.
How about selling weapons to corrupt leaders for immoral use? Would you sell guns to Pol Pot and sleep well at night?
