    Let's say I can see the light from 2 stars. You tell me that one star is 1000 light years away and the other is 5000 light years away. Given that both are visible from my observation point, how were you able to tell me the distance (in light years) that the light traveled to get here?

    I know the speed of light is a constant. I just don't know how you can observe one light source and know how long it took the light to get here unless you already know the distance by some other means.

    Today's world of copy protection is voluntary. You have the right to produce content that people want and to waive copyright on it. That's your free choice. Are you doing that? If not, then why not?

    Country #1 where people have free access to information and some choose to self censor that access?

    Country #2 where the government censors information and unapproved distribution of censored information is a crime?

    I have high hopes for this because it could enable hydrogen to replace fossil fuels as our main source of energy. This would enable the continuing trend of increase personal energy consumption. Enabling personal energy consumption raises standards of living and therefore it is consistent with liberal and progressive values.

    Enabling an increase in personal energy consumption for all is a more moral stance than the current emphasis on conservation.

    I have no problem with 2 free entities, in this case the borrower and the lender, entering into a voluntary agreement. Given today's laws on disclosure of terms, borrowers know they are gambling and as a free man in a free and open society I don't have a problem with that.

    Your post indicates that high housing costs are preventing people from pursuing careers they really want. Let's say we all put you in charge of lowering the cost of housing. What would you do?

    I'm not being self-important, just self aware. I know what I like to work on. I like to work on small teams of bright people who are following their passions. This project does not qualify for me because it does not tap my passions. You are right that some people are passionate about this health care system and I hope they make this project a success. Its just no my cup of tea.

    For a project like this to succeed, it will need leaders who are doing more than your contribution of 'put up with the boredom'. Could you really look the hiring manager in the face and say you are excited about contributing to the project?

    You sound very mercenary to me. When I hire people I make sure I avoid hiring mercenaries.

    I know the reason that this project, and others like it, will fail. This project cannot attract great IT people to work on it because its boring and run by bureaucrats. I'm a strong IT developer but I'd never work on a project like this. Life is just too short. I'd look for something a lot more fun that will attract great people to work with.

    I agree. You deal with speech you do not agree with by doing more speech that makes a counter point. That's a lot healthier and easier to accomplish than running around trying to muzzle people. Who muzzles the muzzlers?

    You have to answer my question because the tech companies will not produce their own films unless they can make money from them. You propose that they allow copyleft distribution (yes, I get it) and I'm just curious as to how the tech company movie producers will recover their production costs in that method of distribution.

    How does the producer of a copyleft movie make money? You'll have to answer that question before big tech companies will consider it.

    I bring this up because in most cases, splitting hairs on definitions of particular words is merely a smoke screen to distract from the core moral issue. Language is an imperfect means of describing moral concepts but the moral concepts themselves still exist in a more pure sense.

    Let me modify my cable example to address your concerns about trespass and damage to my neighbor's cable.

    I convince my neighbor to allow me to come onto his property and splice my cable into his.

    Is that theft?

    Is it morally OK?
