I disagree. Let's say one area has both DSL and Cable IP as choices for high speed internet access. Let's say that the DSL company implements your fear scenario. They will block any blogger that does not pay to reach their customers. If I am the cable IP provider then I will not do this and then make this clear in my advertising campaign. My ads would say: Do you want the entire internet? Then signup with my cable IP service. Customers will flock to me.
I have a lot more faith in the invisible hand of the free market than I do in corrupt politicians whose hands are dirty from counting bribe money.
How is this a 4th amendment issue? Its freely evident in the public space that YouTube possesses stolen property. Youtube may fight the subpoena but I do not see anything unreasonable here about Fox's actions.
I was waiting for this post. Everytime a post on Slashdot criticizes China for censorhip, someone comes along and apologizes for China by pointing out American advocates for censorship.
Didn't your mother teach you that two wrongs do not make a right? I am against censorship. If China censors then I am against that. If the USA censors then I am against that. Human rights is not a team sport.
Why don't you start an ISP and give away free service? You assert that it should be free. That's within your power. You don't need the governments help. Start and ISP and give away free service. What is stopping you?
I agree with this guy. We can't even begin to imagine what our children are going to invent after growing up in this early phase of the internet culture. I, for one, am not excited about letting the geriatric politicos shackle our kids from innovating in ways we cannot anticipate today.
You are free to invent your own video device based on your own invented video format. Then you'd be free from the MPAA specifications. Why don't you do this?
Sorry, but this analogy does not hold up. The MPAA is not stopping anyone from making original movies. They are simply saying that you cannot copy someone else's work and call it your own. The French button makers wanted to ban button making completely for anyone outside their guild.
Let's say that I have a house. Let's say I have $20,000 in the bank. I assume that is subject to tax since it is a net asset. Let's say then that I pay $20,000 to an artist to air brush a picture of Jessica Simpson in short shorts on my garage door. Some people would say this raises the value of my house. Some people would say that it lowers the value of my house. How would you the tax assessment on my house if I do this?
I'm still not getting the difference. You are too vague. Why don't you propose the text of a new tax statute and post it here where I can review it and comment? The devil will be in the details.
Citizens already have the ability to enact property taxes. Many states do this. Many choose not to. Its a voluntary system. Are you suggesting that the people cannot decide this one for themselves?
You can live in a DRM free world today. Your participation in the existing paradigm is voluntary. Is there anything stopping you today from producing your own hit movie and releasing it without DRM?
If you don't like DRM then become a DRM-free producer. You'll be a more effective leader by walking that walk than you will by being a harping critic who takes no action.
> 5. The sales department sells features that do not exist, promise a date, and do not consult IT at all about the feasibility or time estimates
My advice to you, for this item, is to begin looking for a new job right now. If your sales force can't make enough money selling the product you already have then you don't have a great product. Then, couple that with the fact that your sales force seems to have free reign to put the company into lose-lose deals that will end with bitterness for the customer.
Be candid with management. If that does not work then run away. There are alternatives at the same or greater income level. That's been my direct experience.
I don't expect businesses to conform to my passion. Fortunately, for both my employer and myself, I have a great match between my passion and the company's needs. I love what I do.
How about your relationship with your employer? When they hired you, were you transparent and up front about the fact that you 'save your passion for your hobbies' and that you're just in it for the money? Answer truly.
90% of transactions happen through COBOL? Is this supposed to make me want to programin COBOL?
Sorry friends, but I have to work on code that matches my passion. Otherwise I would not be able to swing my legs out of bed in the morning and live my life with joy. Some people may be making a living with COBOL but none of the cool kids (myself included) will touch it.
It's not enough for you to just be a critic and then sit back. If not advertising, then how would you provide the funds to keep wikipedia running. It's not cheap to provide the systems and datacenter fees to run one of the most highly trafficed www website in the world.
You also have another option. You could start a rival wiki that has whatever stance towards advertising that you prefer. What is stopping you?
I don't see it as unsolicited. You have a choice of cell phone providers. If you don't want ads then pick one that does not show ads. You also have the choice of not using cell service at all. There is nothing unsolicited here. Every party enters these agreements voluntarily.
Of course not. I believe in due process and the fact that the burden of proof lies with the state in criminal proceedings. However, given a choice of how to spend my personal money, I'd give it to his kids before I personally funded his legal defense. That's my right as a free man in a free society.
You won't get a steady supply of improvements without natural market demand for them. The main motivator I perceive for demand for Linux desktop is hostility towards Windows from software developers who don't like the way Windows is implemented. Well folks, that argument does not mean much to most consumers. You'll have to in their hearts and minds to create demand outside the software developer community.
Linux desktop is a hobby system for enthusiasts. That's what the market share numbers tell me.
Perhaps he might get more takers and a higher price if the proceeds from the sale were used to set up a trust for his kids. They don't have a mother and their father will probably be in prison until he dies. Human buyers will make a more emotional connection with helping his kids than they will helping the defense of a murder suspect.
The reason that his has not happened naturally is because the real consumer demand for common chargers and data cables does not exist to a large degree. If it did then the free market would have already responded. Don't put too much stock in the shrill anecdotes here in Slashdot praising the heavy hands of authoritarian governments who consistently think the elites running those governments know better than consumers and manufacturers.
Microsoft? How is Microsoft a monopoly? What would you do about it if you were in charge of the country?
I disagree. Let's say one area has both DSL and Cable IP as choices for high speed internet access. Let's say that the DSL company implements your fear scenario. They will block any blogger that does not pay to reach their customers. If I am the cable IP provider then I will not do this and then make this clear in my advertising campaign. I thought Al was the father of the internet, not this interloper!

In that system, does an air brushed picture of Jessica Simpson on my garage add or subtract value from my asset?
Let's say that I have a house. Let's say I have $20,000 in the bank. I assume that is subject to tax since it is a net asset. Isn't that covered by property taxes today?
Citizens already have the ability to enact property taxes. Many states do this. Many choose not to. Its a voluntary system. Are you suggesting that the people cannot decide this one for themselves?
The system for delivering movies is not closed. You simply have to make it available for download from your own website.
You can live in a DRM free world today. Your participation in the existing paradigm is voluntary. Is there anything stopping you today from producing your own hit movie and releasing it without DRM?
