I would not shed a tear for Bush if he was impeached.
Your memory about Clinton is faulty. He was impeached for lying under oath about his affair. In other words, he committed perjury. I did not shed a tear for him either. I would of thought better of him if he had just come out and admitted the whole thing from the beginning. In that scenario there would have been no impeachment.
Can you propose an answer to your cashier question? What do you think happened to lamplighters that were replaced by electric lamps? How about blacksmiths that were replaced by the automobiles?
I don't share your sense of gloom. People today are living longer and better than 50 years ago. People below the poverty line in the USA today drive their own car, they have color TV's, and they are vaccinated. None of them are going to be crippled by polio or die from the measles.
Still, if you really think things are getting worse, let's make you King with absolute authority. What would you do to change things?
Using mySQL as an analogy in the mass consumer space is ludicrous. I'm sure you disagree. Here is a way we can settle this: Please produce a full feature length movie that everyone wants to see. Then distribute it without DRM. Let's see what happens!
You can start by leading by example. Please produce a full feature length movie that everyone wants to see. Then distribute it without DRM. The example you set then would be a better argument and valued more by today's content owners than the shrill scream that you posted here.
The Broadcast Flag is a great example of governmental checks and balances in action. The courts struck it down. What point were you trying to make? That consumers have all the power they need?
I have a 4 year old. I'm curious about what other parents of pre-schoolers are doing with their kids and computers. I don't do a whole lot other than to find some pictures of places we have been or as reference material for his questions. I'm reluctant to let me become a gamer at this age. He already has a lot of imaginative play with hard toys.
I always enjoy a good whiff of defeatism with my morning coffee. Thank You.
Remember that these so called big businesses all started out as a single person who ended up 'budging' big business or governments. Microsoft started as Bill Gates. Google started as Larry and Sergei. I'm glad they did not talk themselves out of trying. We are all capable of a great deal.
You are talking about a 'Try before you buy' scheme. In your world that's okay. In your world, you can walk on the Chevy dealer's lot at 2AM, hot wire a Corvette, and take it for a joy ride so long as at some later point in life you actually buy a Corvette. Right?
No. I am merely baiting a rhetorical debate on the ethics of ripping and distributing that is outside of the license agreement that comes with the content.
Why does every conversation about China on Slashdot include some posters who point out immoral behavior in the United States? Are you trying the justify immoral behavior in China? Didn't anyone ever tell you that two wrongs don't make a right? Isn't that a level of emotional maturity we all master by the age of 9? I'm against immoral government behavior no matter which government is doing it. There are examples I can cite in both the United States and in China. USA: Death Penalty. China: Fearful censorship meant to stifle peaceful dissent.
Do you believe there are any universal moral truths? If you do not then there is never a moral justification for resisting the immoral laws of a human government.

Ambient Findability

· Score: 2, Insightful
The benefits of ambient findability will be exploited most successfully by societies who do not attempt to restrict the ability of the average citizens to use the ambient findability. The societies that allow free and open access will improve the lives of all of their citizens at a faster rate than those that do not. A government like the one currently running the show in Iran will continue to have a hard time controlling the hearts and minds of their citizens. Citizens of open societies in Europe and the United States will have to remain vigilant against new ham handed restrictions that are intended to keep us safe.
China apologists always seem to float the transgressions of other countries rather than trying to refute the fact that the PRC government is evil. They do this because the PRC government is indefensible. The post I am responding to is a perfect example of this.
So, h4rm0ny, why can't I be for justice everywhere? In the PRC and in the United States if the USA government is also disrespecting human rights? Are you for absolute right and wrong or is politics a team sport for you?
Have you tried telling the employers your thoughts on this topic? You have more influence than you think. I've had good luck driving this exact point home at a few companies.
I agree that IT people should be business aware. I disagree that IT wages are under downward pressure. I see the exact opposite of that in Silicon Valley.
Ground yourself in fundamentals rather than just one technology or language. Language wars are silly because a good engineer can learn a language easily. Know yourself. Be honest with yourself first. Understand what you like to do and find a job where you can do that. Be innovative. Keep your skills current and apply them to new problems. Be respectful to your colleagues. They need you and you need them. Penis waving is not a firm foundation for a functional team. Be a hero on a consistent basis.
If you are anti-copyright then you already have everything you need to live in a non-copyright lifestyle. Become a publisher yourself. Create content that is so great that it will be consumed and loved by millions of people. Waive the copyright on that material.
Why can't you just live your dream and leave those of us who do respect copyright alone?
Your argument is that things that are important to society should not be left to private companies. Let's apply that argument to some other examples. Would you say the same about development of standards for the WWW? It seems to me that voluntary associations of private companies for developing WWW standards has led to the creation of hundreds of thousands of jobs in ways that the government never imagined. I think the same thing is possible with space exploration.
I like this as an example of privately funded space exploration technology development. All of the participants in this adventure, from fund providers to astronauts, will be associated with the project on a voluntary basis. In the alternative model of publicly funded space exploration, taxpayers are coerced into funding the project and yet they do not exercise any real influence or control over the bureacracy that runs the program. The private model is based on voluntary association. The public model requires coerced association. Therefore, I conclude that the private model has a higher moral foundation.

Does this mean the Chinese ban is ok?

Remember the Broadcast flag, anyone?
The Broadcast Flag is a great example of governmental checks and balances in action. The courts struck it down. What point were you trying to make? That consumers have all the power they need?
PShaw. It has nothing to do with shareholders. The content owners will not let Google distribute their property without DRM.

In this world, does the current owner of the Corvette have the right to not allow the test drive?

Will you be ripping copies that you purchased? What will you do with the ripped bytes? Will you distribute them to other people?

Is Apple going to completely dump power? Or will it continue to build for both Power and the new Intel architecture?
