I'm assuming that ifiwereasculptor uses a 64bit system. They usually seem to use more memory. My computer runs debian amd64 with xfce, and I find that I usually have around 300MB used after startup.
No, grandmas and average teenager don't use Linux. The majority of Linux users are technical people and are using Linux for a reason. The GNOME people are aiming for a group of users that doesn't exist and never will.
