Like it or not, MS has defined the look of desktop in good and in bad... Almost all, well all, new Linux users are refugees from windows desktop. They excpect certain things.
Remember the gnome usability study published a little while ago? Many of the complaints concerned things not done in MS-way. I'm not saying that MS that original either. Many desktop ideas in windows are stolen from OS2 or Apple, which is fine. No need to reinvent the wheel.
..and replace it with what ? Until these people propose something better instead I think we are going to be better off with what we have now.

Look, there is time for everything. People are getting uneasy with rampant corporationalism we are seeing novadays, with reason I would say. Many people are confusing this unrest with socialism and are sadly missing the whole point. Corporations have served mankind well and will continue to do so, they just need moderation. It is possible to be too powerful.
I am personally a big supporter of Tobins tax initiative, an effort to give the control back to whom it belongs.
Problem is that these supposed differences cannot be verified with appropriate tests which makes them quite useless.
People who claim to hear differences between amplifiers and cd-players are not wery keen to do blind tests or anything.
Are you dumb or something?? People have actually payed money for those bloody Nvidia cards. They have ALL THE RIGHT IN THE WORLD to get decent drivers.
If Nvidia won't provide them, they are bastards. It's so simple.
Let the conspiracy theories roll: Question What is the best way to downplay Linux? Answer Create a phony company that has no value nor product, claim that you're doing the same thing as other companies as well. Let people who don't understand Linux wonder what the hell is going on.

In this post pev explained that Windows MacOS and QNX didn't need Open Source to succeed. Well that's true because windows, MacOS and QNX *established* their position in market long time ago.
I think it is very hard to compete against established operating systems with quality. Hype is *needed*. Linux has it shortcomings but it has succeeded because of Open Source which brought Hype along. I don't see this happening with Be. BeOS is wonderful OS which kills windows and MacOs in multimedia department but I fear that it will not give it market share.
