Let's drop EXT3 and reiser FS. EXT3's journaling is too broken and reiser FS is just unstable.

Perhaps Linux should adopt NTFS as the default file system, with a tweak or two for permissions.

I certainly agree with birth control.

The main problem, in my view, is overpopulation. A lot of the polution is created by a somewhat small fraction of the humain population. When the poor masses in developing countries become richer and start eating like we do (in my opinion eating habits are the worst thing for the environment), drive cars instead of biking, have running water, etc etc, the shit is really gonna hit the fan. We can already see climate change because we (civilized people) have maxed out what the Earth can take and now the chinese are poluting like hell on top of it. Thank god Indians have more environmental-friendly habits.

    Survival of mankind:
    -High prices for poluting items
-massive population reduction (war, famine, slavery, family planning, benevolent action, etc)
-real environmental laws with real enforcement
    -better education, including more vegeteranism
-better technology (lesser emissions, meat created in vats, etc)

The problem is that people dont change that easily. So for the most part, we need either fewer people and/or better technology to handle our habits.

I bought a H2 two years ago in support of the war. I am lucky because I can afford more than a "Go Army" sticker.

Well, I can say that I would love for everybody (but me) to drive that cool vehicle from UBC for 2 reasons:
1- Sometimes I feel a bit guilty about the environment. Then I wouldn't need to care.
2- It's not just the troops feeling the heat in Iraq, with all the pictures of burning hummers on TV, it's starting to get to my self-esteem. If I was in my hummer and everybody else was in those vehicles, i'd feel pretty safe in case of heads-on collisions.

I guess they are not very practical, but they are still a step in the right direction.

    just my 2 cents

I agree with your statement saying that it's hard to prevent people from executing stuff, regardless of the media used to propagate viruses, spyware, etc.

However, I think that it also underlines a serious flaw in the Windows security model. Almost everybody runs with administrator privileges because too many things just don't work otherwise. I hope, but doubt, that Windows Vista will address this issue more than simply provide a few anti-spyware utilities.

Let me inform you of the fact that consoles aren't so expensive these days. With the current generation (previous in case of MS), it's easy to buy all 3 with one pay check.

Just the same, it won't be such a big deal to buy a combinaison of consoles in the future. I am thinking specifically of Wii + XBOX 360. That should have just about everything covered. Why the hell would anyone want to buy the PS3? Anything special about it that the XBOX 360 doesn't do? Let's just hope for the PS3 that Blue-Ray has more lasting appeal than the movie format for the PSP!

The best thing that ever happened to Europe was the black plague. This caused the end of the medivial era by reducing the population level to a point where a lot of human lives were suddenly important. For example, people could become blacksmiths and other specialties, not just one person out of a million and the rest of the crowd were just useless slaves.

To a certain extent the first world war served as a cut-off point between the industrial age and the modern era. Unfortunately, the war ended to quickly and this brought the second world war. This rocky road could have been averted had the war been conclusive.

It's worthwhile to note how many third-world countries suffer greatly from natural disasters while civilized ones just coast through them. For example, a storm may kill thousands in Haiti but be barely noticed in the Dominican Republic (same Carabean island). Some may point to the US failings during Katrina, but this was mostly a freak accident caused in part by the unfortunate apathy of governments for generations, and some technical mishaps.

The biggest problem in the third-world countries is over population. Too many people without jobs/carreers. Nothing to do. In such a situation, the Rwanda attempted genocide should wonder no one. Let's not be surprised if such action is repeated in places like Zymbabwe which has a large percentage of unemployment. Let's hope for his own sake that the current dictator Robert Mugabe passes away before this happens.

Every individual death is a sad event. The death of each victim of a plague is a tragedy, but in 100 years, many Africans will be thankful for AIDS as an unlikely ally towards self realisation. Let's also hope for the success of the coming Avian flu pandemic for the sake of south east Asia.
