Based on personal experience that's not the case. After 2.5 years and 41K miles my effective range is essentially unchanged from when the car was new. Part of it is how I maintain charge (I tend to charge to 80 percent unless I know I will be needing more). In fact, the battery is considered to be at the end of its "useful life" when it's down to 60-75 percent of original capacity. At that point it's expected to still have considerable value in stationary applications where absolute capacity is less of an issue.

Actually, there is coordination through the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) for most frequency allocations...because radio waves don't respect borders! The spectrum is a limited resource and as such its use must be coordinated and regulated. Europe has the CEPT and there are other regional organizations. Frankly we'd be better off if all allocations were internationally agreed to...as it stands today different ITU regions have different allocations which leads to complications when communicating between them. Not sure where you're coming up with the claim that you'll spend more with a Prius. We have the original design (2002 model) and consistently get 45MPG without trying very hard...that includes both city and highway driving. I find most people who pooh-pooh hybrids like to quote the best mileage they ever got on a road trip as if that is a fair comparison. It's not.

The car cost about $23k at the time, and we received a $2000 federal deduction and a $1500 state _credit_ on our taxes. The first 5 service visits were included in that price. Given the way fuel costs have jumped over the past 4 years, we're way ahead.

My other vehicle is a Ford Escape Hybrid, which routinely gets 30MPG in a 4000lb vehicle with 4 wheel drive and the ability to tow a small trailer. It replaced a Volvo wagon which got 20MPG on a good day.

Hybrid technology is proven, efficient, clean and reliable. As to the claim that the economy takes precedence over the environment, the idea that the two are in opposition is a myth that needs to be refuted at every opportunity.

Actually the highest frequencies for AM broadcast in the US are 1690 and 1700 Kc. The band was expanded in the 80s.

Before IBOC became a reality on AM, it was entirely possible to get a clean, 7.5 KHz bandwidth signal in stereo on AM using analog equipment.

Also there are some severe limits to Ibiquity's system, most importantly it can't be used after dark due to skywave interference in distant markets. And the digital signal can be heard as a hiss on even modestly decent quality receivers.

IBOC makes more sense on FM where there's enough bandwidth to provide for several decent quality audio channels. There just isn't enough space in an AM channel to make it worthwhile.
