  3. Re:Please - be kind.... on Slashdot's Games of the Year · · Score: 1

Well in any event, I didn't find it boring and pointless (well as un-pointless as a GAME can be anyway)... I will answer your numbered points below: 1. I don't think the voice acting was shitty - it wasn't the best though by a long shot. 2. Hmm. How would you have made the conversation system better? Not that i think it is great or anything. 3. Have to agree with you here. 4. I kind of liked this. But then again I found the endless walking around in Morrowind to be dreadful. 5. Can you explain this more? I liked that creatures, treasure, etc leveled up with me. Perhaps that's not what you mean. 6. Can't agree here at all. I though it looked great. 7. I don't even KNOW what normal-mapping or bloom lighting is - I just know it looked good to me. 8. I find the dungeons satisfactory and don't remember ever feeling like the Morrowind dungeons were any better or worse. 9. A matter of personal preference I guess. 10. These things didn't detract from the game for me, even if they are valid to some degree. For whatever reason Oblivion struck a chord with me. I like it. A lot. It's fun and I don't have to sacrifice a huge chunk of my life to play it. To be game of the year (for me) a game doesn't need to "advance" anything forward. It just needs to be fun to play. My favorite baseball game is still Earl Weaver Baseball that I play on an Amiga emulator... The focus on "next gen" bullshit makes me want to puke. Oblivion is fun to me and that is why it's MY game of the year. Thanks for the reply! Gave me plenty to think about!

  4. Please - be kind.... on Slashdot's Games of the Year · · Score: 1

My game of the year is Oblivion - I simply love this game and frankly was a little surprised not to see it mentioned more. There was even a comment deriding it a bit ("Oblivion? Really?)... My question to you all - and I seriously am asking with the utmost respect - is HOW can this NOT be the game of the year for more people? What is it about Oblivion that keeps you from nominating it your game of the year. Please don't turn this into platform and/or genre bashing - not interested in that. Just curious as to what people find wrong with this game! Thanks y'all! A

Do you wait until your net connection goes down before you install a secondary line? Do you wait until your first data center burns down before you install a backup? Unfortunately that is EXACTLY what most people do. Unlike our data or internet connections however, we only get one chance with our planet. I fear that people just aren't taking global threats seriously enough and will only take note when it's too late...

  13. Re:Why not for US students... on Jobs Offers Free Mac OS X For $100 Laptops · · Score: 1

Well these will be government subsidized programs, it won't actually cost the students anything. In fact the plan "would require governments in the developing world to come up with $15 billion to supply 150 million laptops" and they aren't sure how many countries could do that. On the MIT page it specifically says "Please note that the $100 laptops--not yet in production--will not be available for sale. The laptops will only be distributed to schools directly through large government initiatives" So again, no cost to the individual. Also, where did you read "without requiring donations or anything of the sort. That, in part, was why this Apple proposal was rejected."?? EVERYTHING I have read from MIT states ONE reason for Job's offer being rejected "We declined because it's not open source," says Dr. Papert, noting the designers want an operating system that can be tinkered with."

  14. Why not for US students... on Jobs Offers Free Mac OS X For $100 Laptops · · Score: 2, Interesting

I may have read it wrong, but the page at MIT says that this is for "developing nations". Its not bad enough we lose a lot of tech jobs to offshore companies, now we have to provide free laptops to "developing nations". I am not saying it isn't a cool initiative, and yes a lot of families here can afford to buy their kids laptops, but where's the push to get them into the hands of underprivileged American kids? And then to get schools to actually USE the technology in a meaningful way... My son attends a "progressive" middle school with a "technology" program...so far he has played Sim City and built a 4 foot tower out of paper cups.
