Send an email to Joy Smith (the MP who introduced this half baked bill). Here's mine:
I would like to voice my objections to the "Clean Internet Bill" recently introduced by Ms Smith. This bill will be totally unenforceable as any traffic can and will be encrypted on the Internet. And an ISP licence? I thought one of the goals of this government was LESS bureaucracy. This would be yet another arbitrary and unenforceable regulation. Do I become an ISP for sharing a connection with other members of my household? Canada currently has a reputation as a leader in the high tech field, but this reputation will be eroded by such poorly thought out pieces of legislation as this.
The more exotic torrents (and the directly downloadable ISOs) can be found at the official release site but I thought we'd try to save their servers a bit of pain and heartache.
"The nickel is mined and smelted at a plant in Sudbury, Ontario. This plant has caused so much environmental damage to the surrounding environment that NASA has used the 'dead zone'...
Man, when are they going to stop trotting that NASA thing out? I've lived in Sudbury for a while (the bignickel in my UID refers to a giant model Nickel that the city is famous for), and my family has lived there since 1905. Yes, at one point Sudbury was a bit of a moonscape. But that was decades ago and they've since received numerous awards for the ecological restoration that has gone on.
As much as I agree that most of our gadgets need to be made more efficient, I don't think it will necessarily lead to reduced consumption. When tungsten light bulbs replaced carbon ones early in the last century, electricity use went down immediately because tungsten bulbs were significantly more efficient. However, this brought the possibility of electric lighting to the masses, and quite quickly the electricity usage skyrocketed.
You can check out The Jevons Paradox. Horace Herring has done quite a bit of work in this area. I can't find a free version, but there is a good paper here.
As a Canadian taxpayer I'm thrilled to see so much OSS in use at the CBC. Now they just need to focus on non-proprietary file formats for their content (Windows Media is still king - at least for my regional radio). However, Ogg is an option for the national radio broadcast, and the always excellent Radio 3 Podcast. Now, we only need to get rid of Freestyle...
Since Update Manager isn't automatically updating (as of now), and the sources.list linked to in the parent has been slashdotted, here is the sources.list you should use for the upgrade:

Adding "Magic" to the front of your product name really does little for your credibility. This is a little reminiscent of another spray.
Here's the original article. I wonder if Massachusetts will take up the case, but insist that Stepmania [stepmania.com] be used instead...
