This you say is interesting. KDE4 is often demonized as looking too much like Vista or 7, but KDE had its appearance before V/7 did...Unfortunately most people will never know, and prefer to just bash "that windows clone". It's like QT, it's perfectly usable for hardcore license hippies now, but it still has that fame of "not free (as speech)" you get in Gnome vs KDE discussions.
Just the result of seeing too many movies with UFOs. And what's the reason to find that anyway? If someone is so hellbent on discovering alien life, it has to be more than discovery. An alien fetishist? Someone who desires enslavement of Earth like in movies? What's the use of alien life? I hope this person doesn't think that aliens are really going to help us. So selfish. Mankind can not even get along with itself, do you expect space opera styled interplanetary relationships? Universal federations? Hah.
There are way, way more useful things in our planet that are awaiting for discovery, yet we use the power of A LOT OF PEOPLE to discover alien life, that might be useless as even if they exist, we might be unable to even communicate with them. Those who collaborate with SETI are just neckbeards with too many scifi movies on their mind. Aliens might exist but if they do, they are too far away, because we make a lot of noise and no one noticed yet. Your best alien might be a bacteria from Mars and not a Predator.
Oh yes now someone will reply about the power of beliefs, I don't care, if I said I believed in faeries you'd say the same so shut up before saying anything about respecting other's beliefs. SETI is useless for mankind, we need to focus on something that is tangible and has a potentially useful result, not finding E.T. calling home.
Nerds. SETI should have died years ago, but people keeps that childish hope and defends it like a religion.
...We are paying the mistakes of the previous generations. The #1 cause of "messed up individuals" is bad parenting. When I was a child, my mother physically abused me until she broke her own hands. Then she swapped to tactics of power-mongering and psychological abuse that still keeps to this day. Any mistake or anything she saw as a offense (not as a "wrong thing", she doesn't care about education), it meant to sleep on the street for days. She suffers a form of autism and paranoid behavoir inherited from her family branch. That person suffered 2 or 3 years of her life and made sure my brother's and my life was a mess. We got no basic education or "street wisdom" at all. I had absolute prohibition to go out or hang out with friends, so I turned distant. Fuck, when my brother was like 7 she made him swallow soap to "cleanse him up". Every single mistake is punished harshly with insults, and any new info she obtains on you is used as a weapon immediately. This person doesn't leave home anymore except for groceries, and has one of those phobias to bacteries and stuff, wearing gloves to do any single action. My brother eventually followed her steps, and is now unable to leave home out of paranoia and "following her example". I live with them as I can't afford an apartment with my low salary. My father divorced her when I was a kid, it was relatively new back then. I didn't care much but we lived without moneys for some years, which was hard. He also is the most distant person ever, being extremely friendly on presence but never remembering about his offspring otherwise. No birthdays or holidays, he's totally oblivious.
Sounds like "I just need to do things right", but it's easy to say when I don't know how the hell the right way is. I can have an idea but I don't know for certain, only theories, and there are things I am still realizing at this point, realizing how non-existent my education was. I was forcefully isolated and shaped to the whims of a mentally unstable person, and it took me several years to realize what the fuck was going on. At this point I might still carry her fucking stigma without realizing. It's hard to undo bad parenting even knowing the problem. Every week I had to heard how I was a failure in a condom, and taunts that are more out of a verbal fight than any attempt at education.
All of this caused a large number of mental diseases, most importantly Narcolepsy (falling asleep anywhere without notice except at bed. I can even fall asleep walking, on the bus, at work...) and Irritable Bowel Syndrome from the lack of sleep, which only allows one meal a day under risk of severe diarrhea and pain. I can only medicate the second because I get funky side effects from the benzodiazepamines I was prescripted for narcolepsy, and that helps getting a relatively normal life. Still, no one will ever recognize it as a handicap, they will just think of a day they didn't sleep well and consider it a minor thing...but I have had accidents for falling asleep without noticing, with multiple injuries. Also the lack of energy and willpower and depressions triggered by lacking sleep.
Anyway I digress. Everyone I know who is miserable even with money and survival means, has parents that shouldn't have been allowed to bear children, simply. I regard my mother as garbage, for being such an evil, arrogant and energy-draining bitch, and for not doing what she had to do. I know that when I can hold myself without taking care of those close-ins (rentals here are way more expensive than the US with lower minimum wage), I am not seeing her again. Maybe my brother...he was made a subhuman by her actions but he kicked ass when he was a kid.
Don't blame youth, blame who made them whiny, diseased bitches. You will find the one that gave them life is the reason that life is miserable, more often than not.
Hey, at least no one in that shitwad of a family I have gets drunk, it's a definite plus.
How is that unlikely? Never caught two of the regular one in a short period? I work with a lot of people at my workplace, some with poor hand hygiene, so I wasn't surprised myself. Sure it's a pain, but I got lucky and had no serious complications.
I caught H1N1 twice as I work with public who, just by eye judgement, don't know the wonders of soap. No one cares, not even myself. "Blown out of proportion" is not even accurate, it was described pretty much like the black plague, but for me and everyone that got it with me...some didn't even notice it was a different flu, all are alive and well. However someone I don't know directly (friend of a friend's sister) died by complications on her breathing system, although the flu acted as a trigger for something bigger, it seems... People with breathing issues should be cautious.
I don't use it personally (wanting to, just not wanting to do it "now"), but I heard wonders of TiddlyWiki (http://www.tiddlywiki.com/) that is a javascript+html dynamic file (self-updates and is its own code), very customizable and orientable to tasks, and can be used online as well. At least it's worth checking. Another one I use right now is Zim, a desktop wiki app that is very simple to use and works well...
But, that is GTK software, not Gnome software. Aside from it looking a bit ugly (solvable) you can use those programs in KDE without issues at all. I use plenty of GTK apps in my KDE desktop, even Gnome ones. One thing doesn't nullify the other.
I was asking seriously, so I don't get your fine humor. Anyway, let me ask in a different way. What are the beliefs that lead you to seek alien life? And why alien life and not something else from this planet that remains hugely unknown to us despite our lasting presence.
And seeing the responses, what the heck is wrong with you? Too used to trolls? I ask because no one around me is into alien stuff and I am curious. Alright if you want it like that, why is finding mars men cool and not ghosts or something else?
Damnit/. keep the paranoia down. The no conspiracies part is because some will quickly jump to say about the government funding alien stuff and that is not a serious response.
I don't intend to troll but to get a response. Seriously, I don't believe in aliens beyond movies, and I don't understand the interest about this program. I'd like to know why would someone install this, can some users tell me about it? (But please no conspiracies)
GIMP is terrible, period. But I kind of need it. Believe it or not it's very very good to draw game sprites for some reason, but feels so bloated and useless for most other tasks out of "resize/move/crop/apply filter". Drawing a picture on it is criminally hard. I can understand it being removed, but I guess I am adding it back anyway, just like I did with Pidgin in Karmic.
And are you sure that's not caused by something else? I have been running KDE since 4.1.x and it has a few plasma crashes once in a while and a few minor annoyances but nothing like what you describe. And I don't see that memory consumption you talk about, with 1gb RAM and many "useless" services active, including experimental plasmoids and my other apps like firefox and so, I only touch swap when using Virtualbox. I use Kolourpaint to draw quick diagrams during brainstorms and I don't see it behaving like you say, using a tablet or mouse. Are you talking about Krita maybe? Also your system is faster and has more RAM than my own, so I can't really see what is wrong there. Maybe you are using a very bad install, or messed up somewhere? If not, I'd say you are exaggerating to make a point of Gnome being better. You speak exactly like a friend that talks about conspiranoias and tells really exaggerated stuff, when he's sure no one around knows that topic, to make himself sound smarter. I mean, you can say KDE4 sucks, but the moment you mention the "rival" your credibility kind of goes down. No offense though, maybe it's not your intention. Although I agree on the Amarok 2 being garbage.
I have 164, but I am what you can call downright stupid. My talking is awkward, I am very clumsy and I have trouble with empathy and I am too lazy and selfish. I have really bad short-term memory too. I do really well in low-resource situations and I have a great capacity to learn new skills and forming balance out of situations, but that was never anything that could help me with real life... although I do very well with little money at least. So I agree, it means little.
For me it only served to get "extra attention" from teachers that demanded more from me than from everyone else, right to the point of "adjusting" my grades to my theorical intelligence and silly lectures about my "potential". Since my profile circulated around the town, I got those high demands until the very last years, where I couldn't afford any more and got to work. I couldn't even get to college.
I kind of solved it by placing the loader on another drive I suspect is loading first (my OS one is SATA while that one is not). It worked but takes a long delay. I heard an alternate solution was to fiddle with the BIOS boot order, but it was already set up properly. I wonder if I have to wipe out the MBR of every drive and install again...but I prefer the delay to having to load the install CD again! (it takes so much time to be functional that I feel so lazy about it). Anyway just in case I removed grub2 and marked it as "experimental" in my mind. Maybe next time.
It worked really well for me. I got it on day 2 and except for a bothersome Grub2 error (error 15!) that took one hour to fix (although it will now take a long time to get to load the actual OS...like 6-7 seconds before continuing), it was pretty good. Of course my first action once booted was to remove Pulseaudio (those 64mb sink files it generates in/dev/shm are TRUE memory hogs), getting a KDE4 system running (I am desktop agnostic but I am more used to plasma as desktop now due to some plasmoids), ensuring Synaptic was still around (The app center is...not too clear as to what dependences packages have), Ubuntu Tweak, adding repositories, compiling some SVN versions (zdoom, geany, audacious2 and some plasmoids), and I got my system running in about one evening. I don't notice anything different or weird, so I don't really understand the complaints. Maybe because I use KDE4 (not Kubuntu though) instead of the defaults? (this is a genuine question, I am curious)
It's a bit unfair this reply is lost to karma... I agree with you, many developers are too high into their awesomeness to aid newcomers. Papers can help but at times they are too convoluted to one who doesn't have a degree of expertise. Also they generally require more papers to explain things mentioned in the paper, so to know how to do something you need to study like if was going to be your career, I don't think everyone can do that having a full-time job. But in the end nothing is impossible, for sure, at least in terms of gaming (and within the boundaries of hardware and reality).
I fail to see your point unless you own every iPhone model and try to defend Apple just because you love it. I don't criticize that, but... Anyone storing sensitive data into a PSP or Xbox...well, who WOULD? It's a totally different thing. The worst that can happen is someone looking at your game saves, and at the very worst someone purchasing items on whatever online store you have set up, if any. I'd be more bothered if anyone can get my contact information and use it for spam than losing my saves. And generally news regarding a console's hacking are more oriented to "homebrew devs/pirates, get set!". Consoles are also products designed to deliver game content to whoever uses it, so they need no security at all other than profiles or that stuff. The windows being hackable thing, now that's more appropriate, since a windows PC stores more sensitive data than consoles.
Now I am off to encrypt my PSP's data so no hacker will ever steal my records. Damnable ruffians.
I am not sure, but this has just set a precedent. Because of NoScript dev's moronic attitude (It is perfectly fine to protect revenue, but DO NOT mess with another program, and a well-reputed one, on the way), may others might have learned of that clever trick...regulations to avoid this will have to be ensured by Mozilla so no extension will fight with another negatively by blocking functionalities like this.
Expect more on this line in the future for sure. It's a really bad idea to make this kind of nasty trick public, others might learn and instead of a black egg in the basket we will have many. It's like idiots ramming demolition balls on their crotch just because they saw it on Jackass. And precisely extensions are what make Firefox a winner, I won't like the idea of having to fear them like one of those IE toolbars.
Of course it's a worst case scenario, hopefully things will stay like this, and I hope they do.
If not because I need noscript to block JS files to make Internet usable with my slow dial-up, I'd have ditched it long ago. I have some kind of feeling it's blocking something in Ubiquity's last version, it stopped working right after a noscript upgrade for me.
This game is pure garbage, that's all I can say. My brother in Europe spent 50 for it only to discover it doesn't install. Why? Because it requires online Steam activation. You'd say it'd be as easy as going online, but we are from a borderline poor family, hence we cannot afford broadband connection or connection at all. The box fails to specify this only showing a small logo of Steam, that is completely unknown if you haven't used it beforehand. No "Requires internet connection" line or small print at all. (At least in the one he purchased, I didn't check the US version myself). This is just the worst. A person with little financial income makes the big effort of purchasing a 50 game (way more than $60) because he loved the first one and he has two 50 shiny round mirrors instead of a game. DRM only serves to mess around with players like him. Of course, he's tremendously angry, he needed a lot of time to save the cash and the shop is refusing to refund him because "once the videogame's box has been open it cannot be returned because it'd have been copied (pirated)". WHAT!? As far as I am concerned FEAR2 and all computer games that aren't of indie nature can rot away in hell. Adding to the expense of a computer powerful enough to run that souped-up Doom you also need to have a (very expensive where my brother lives) working broadband internet connection (dialup makes Steam go stupid, it timeouts all the time so you are in 0% ALWAYS, so you can't do the trick with a cheap one). It's abusive, discriminating and stupid. I tried to get a crack for him but those only cover what seems to be the "calling home" when the game is run, which is useless if you can't get the freaking thing to install. So those 50 are going nowhere it seems.
My main conclusion is: A game that locks down players is not a game. A game should be "get, run" and not this freaking circus. And, how are the developers going to act? Because it's very easy to count piracy cases (that aren't loses, are non-profits), but how about the one who was just scammed (because this IS a scam)? That one will never be mentioned.
Uhm, I ran GZDoom (OpenGL-accelerated port) on VBox2.1 in a Linux host, XP guest, and it ran perfectly well, no visual artifacts or anything weird aside from high CPU usage (if enough video RAM is allocated, it might perform better, I barely had 40mb of VRAM in that virtual machine). I don't have any more accelerated games around that aren't dependent on D3D, but I was very satisfied for now. Now a compatibility layer on D3D and it'll be pure gold.
Configuring everything in Gnome? I assume you use KDE as your DE.
*drumroll*
