On GIMP, you don't even need that, single-window mode with panes you can arrange and stuff, a very standard look, has been there for at least two years already. And thank god it is, everything about using GIMP is 10 times more pleasant nowadays. I wouldn't pick anything else for serious spriting. (For traditional drawing I'd rather use Krita or Mypaint, though)
I've been trying to like Atom.io lately. The latest Ubuntu packages have been pretty good in terms of memory and speed compared to the initial release, and seems to be becoming more interesting.
While my editors of choice are Kate (or the embedded kate-part in Krusader, same thing), and Geany, I've been wondering if anyone else is taking a shine to Atom. Any feedback or opinions?
(Yes, I am aware that using webkit is bloated as all hell, but if it ultimately manages to put more features I like than the others, I am not having second thoughts on using it.)
Fire Emblem is quite competent actually, you are right. I think they are respectable, although I am personally more fond of Front Mission or Disgaea (few other SRPGs allow infinite maps AND item upgrades at the same time, that's a feature I wish more games adopted or even blatantly copied).
The thing about Bank is that, despite planning XY's release for that date, they decided to do the migration to NN immediately after the servers are going to, inevitably, take a massive increase in load. They can't do anything right related to server loads and infrastructure for online services, despite pushing for it themselves. God knows what kind of hierarchical mess they got inside to be unable to plan ahead for events they schedule themselves. I bet this is the typical scenario of division A stepping over division B instead of having a 5-minute meeting to plan things with a minimum of organization.
I haven't reduced my energy usage because all I have working is a light and a computer whenever I am at home. I don't have large tvs, I don't have AC, I don't have a f*cking fan, nor a heater. WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT FROM MEEEEEE!? *cries*
This could be really interesting to use in thermal solar panels (in layman terms: the ones for water heating, not the ones to get electricity). If it absorbs so much light, it's probably more efficient than other materials, and surely much more than black paint. This could raise the efficiency of thermal panels to near 95%, so I hope this becomes a thing.
I wouldn't cover a car with it, though. I don't want to experience a solar oven first-hand.
That's silly. If you are not from the US you are even more eligible to be a target to the NSA. They don't have to face accusations of treason if they spy on someone from another country. (not that it stops them, but makes them more entitled or something, those people is just weird like that)
Hm, actually having someone with your own name do something heinous is pretty much a way to get disgraced without doing anything. I shouldn't have to respond for the crimes of John Doe B. Or imagine John Doe B is a known sex offender, or a pedophile. Scary.
Yet you are happy to use products created by other humans. I don't believe your anti-human charade. Remember that the only reason you are here writing against humans is because humans allowed you to do it. Since it was not your invention, I think you owe humanity an apology. Know your place.
I never heard of it either, despite all the guys trying to tear me a new one for supporting those horrible and evil propietary drivers. I even got called shill about it, just because it works for me. (...and if I was on nvidia's payroll I wouldn't be wasting my time here anyway...)
I guess they got to resort to disinformation in order to scare people away from the binary driver that works so we can all use our systems in a total "libre" fashion. I am a strong supporter of open source, I only produce open source and contribute to open source projects both with code and money. But if the open source driver is terrible, sorry, I am going to use the one that works. I am not going to suffer for someone else's cause. I am an artist, not a martyr.
I guess none of those zealots are artists nor code visual effects or games. I bet they would sing a different tune if they were.
Add another satisfied user of the binary drivers here. I've been using the binary drivers since...2003 I think? I have used at least 6 different models of nvidia cards, and so does my brother. I only got ONE crash in 2004 because of a trasient bug that was fixed the next day, my brother never got any. My best friends who also use linux also have never complained about crashes. So far it's two positive "anecdotal evidences" versus just your negative one. For a "small subset of users", we seem to be more than the opposite.
You can be using your CPU to decode that video perfectly fine if your video player is not set up to (or can't) decode the video through GPU. Depends a bit on player configurations, I think in VLC you have to explicitly enable it, for example. Well, to be perfectly honest with the current generation of consumer CPUs it's not that much of an issue, so it's becoming an obsolete thing real fast even in mobile land. For the other examples a GPU is definitely much nicer though.
Well, you managed to mention not one thing where video power truly matters.
The moment you go into games, game development, image processing, rendering and modeling, perhaps HD video playback (and processing?), or working with very high resolutions, your video card sure does matter, so does the quality of the drivers and its acceptance of standards (specially OpenGL). I found nVidia to be the safest bet in both those tasks I mentioned, as well as support for dual-booting while keeping the same capabilities in both Linux and Windows. Even my budget-cheap nVidia card can use CUDA to speed up renderings in Blender with no effort from my part. Just one click.
Then again, every computer user has a different use for a computer. If you produce nothing in terms of audiovisuals, or don't create or play games, you are pretty much good to go with the weakest/cheapest video adapter you can find.
This! I don't care much if AMD's drivers are open when they are mediocre at best. Everything else seems to boil down to zealotic anti-binary-blob commentaries.
I don't care if it's closed as long as it works. And nVidia works both in windows and linux, so that's where my money will go.
What's wrong with "if (a==b) { stuff() }"? What's a mess in "if a is equal to b then do this"? Maybe it's years of getting used to it, but I can't think of an easier way to represent "if a is equal to b".
I'd vote for a machine. An incorruptible unfeeling machine programmed only for the good of the entire country it's in charge of. No personal agendas, no ambition, just saving the economy and the wellbeing of its citizens. One day, one day
Yes, there's no "need" to pirate per se. But in several cases getting that content legitimately, in Europe, is close to impossible. We are not talking just "delayed release" as the parent poster said, we are also talking about stuff that never, ever, is released commercially in Europe or regions of Europe for whatever reason. Not to mention some European countries like Spain do everything in their power to prevent you from legally purchasing products from other regions, or at least make it much more expensive than it should.
This is different as don't wanting to play by their terms, this is literally having no terms to play with in several cases. And I understand his sentiment, it's a big deal when China can't have those, but when Europe doesn't have US-produced content, shows or articles, nobody gives a damn and we even get called out on pirating stuff we can't purchase without being rich. Please.
Maybe that doesn't bug you, but it's a thing that happens, believe it or not.
I don't know, I think the same thing and I don't think it's about sticking it to the man, it's just that youtube and gmail/g+/etc are radically different things that should be separate. They will track me anyway, so let me have my video channel separate from a service I am not going to use and didn't ask for in the first place.
It annoys me that trying to comment on Youtube requires having extra sites whitelisted, there's a checkbox that is always enabled by default to post comment to G+, and alerts and notifications are usually not related to youtube itself.
So I don't think the parent post is anti-theman, I think it's just anti G+, which is a perfectly reasonable opinion. The ones that want G+ can just go there and use it, the rest shouldn't be forced to use it if they want to keep their Youtube channel up.

The Graffiti Drone
·
· Score: 1
I know of a bunch of shops and bakeries that hired graffiti artists to paint something on their fence, and in all cases it was a great job. You can only see them when the shop is closed, but still. Some towns also let good stuff survive. Not all graffiti is some idiot tagging a wall.
Although, in this very specific case it's just vandalism. The drone can't even be manipulated to draw a sorry smiley face or a square or anything, it just gets the wall dirty at random. It's not even a drone given how poorly controlled it is. It's a wannabe drone.
I expected the little widdle drone doing something...you know, that resembled a drawing or a pattern, even if it's just a signature or a smiley face or a pattern of dots or something.
Instead the poor bugger just stumbles around with a constant stream of paint. That's not very artistic at all, it just gets the wall dirty. The drone in the video does what any RC quadcopter would do if you attached a permanently-on paint spray to it. For someone regarded as an artist I expected something...artistic. Or at least technologically advanced or autonomous or using a complex control system, this being Slashdot and all.
Yeah naive me for expecting something else, I know, my fault entirely.
Banks not lying? Wow, you really showed me. I should move all my banking to Canada, if I could.
And no, I am not being sarcastic. I am too used to my country's banks and their MO, so it's kinda shocking to know some banks operate with a minimum of honesty.
For a minute there I thought "Hey, I thought I had closed the tab with the Java story". You devil, you. Tricked me out.

That's exactly what happened. Everyone was given a sample shock beforehand.

If you didn't get an email or message about it, you probably are unaffected. Those mails were already sent to affected parties.
Apparently not, from what I gathered so far it only is a concern if you are publishing under a label.
