"Update, 12:30 p.m. ET: Several security groups are reporting that it is extremely easy to get whacked by this vulnerability/exploit just by visiting one of a growing number of malicious Web sites that are now employing this attack. F-Secure's blog post on this indicates that -- because the vulnerability lies in the way Windows parses WMF image files -- Firefox and Opera users also can get infected -- although they at least have to agree to download and run a file first"

That's what they say in the article but the only thing I did was to open a .wmf movie in Firefox. I did not click/agree/install anything else.
The thing just auto-installed it-self from that point.

Security companies are useless if they can't protect us. First the Sony Root Kit and now this in a short period of time. I wonder what else we probaly got and don't know about. Their attitude is to be questionned, they are waiting for people to report virus/trojan. What they should do is put up some "ghosts dormant computers" around the net and check if they get infected of any way. They should also browse porn/warez sites more often ;-)

Because we never know what else can be installed and I lost all trust in Security companies since the Sony Root Kit. Removing it my-self implies searching infos over the internet and it's not a good idea to browse the web when your computer is compromised. I had nothing important installed so it did'nt matter. I had a new OS installed in a few minutes after that with ZoneAlarm and AVG(both free) and all the latest patches. I also just did the "REGSVR32 /U SHIMGVW.DLL" to not be infected again.

Some newspapers are getting it right by offering a part of an all new and fresh article on the internet, to read the rest, you have to buy the actual newspaper. Of course this only works with exclusive content. As for buying the newspaper it-self, it's another step. If someone never buy newspaper, he won't be buying newspaper suddently.

In the initial ruling they say "But the judge denied that request. In a far-ranging decision, the court further found that both downloading music and putting it in a shared folder available to other people online appeared to be legal in Canada. "

Makes it available to other people imply uploading so it must be legal. I think some recording associations are trying to mess with the judgement.

From the way I see it. Downloading copyrighted music is legal in Canada and downloading copyrighted movies is illegal but ISP don't care much about it. Laws will probaly change over time... ex: Add a levy on DVD to allow people to download/copy copyrighted movies.

  18. Re:What about Canada? on Free P2P In France? · · Score: 1

Of what I know, downloading copyrighted MUSIC is legal in Canada.

"[ISPs] tend to ignore cease and desist orders more in Canada," said Craig Winter, MPAA Internet enforcement manager. He said that in the United States, the DMCA "says that ISPs, if they have been notified that there is infringing content, they are obligated to remove access to that content or at least notify the end users. So if Canada doesn't have something as strong and the ISPs don't feel they have any liability, they may ignore requests to take down [sites]."

Too bad the broad range of choices doesn't apply to Operating Systems. People are still pretty limited to Windows, Linux, MacOS in general. Don't you think it would be more interesting to see more OS than distros ?
