    If we could break up Microsoft in the 1990s

    Didn't happen.

    People use these sites for the "network effects," meaning that if everyone you know is on Facebook, you will use it to be in contact with them.

    The difference is that everyone has real options now. Just because many people are ignorant of this fact doesn't make it less true.

    However, the centralized model is not healthy

    This is actually something I agree with. A little regulation could ensure that social networks provide an inter-platform interface which would likely be great and horrible at the same time. Then again, we've heard about how the far-right feels about regulation.

    because your data is directly controlled by firms with too much influence, who have shown a willingness to discriminate against non-Leftists.

    I find the cognitive dissonance of the far-right to be absolutely amusing.

    Maybe if we break them up, people will stop being glued to their cell phones in a "fear of missing out" fugue of frenzied exploration of vapid drama and ego-promotion that leaves no one feeling good about life. These companies are a net negative for our society, and in self-defense we can remove them.

    If it were any other company/website then you would be screaming about the "nanny state" at the top of your lungs.

    Hypocrisy, thy name is alternative_right.

  4. Betteridge got it right, again. Facebook, Twitter and Google all have viable alternatives that are easy to access, the fact that few use them is irrelevant. Also, there is little standing in the way of people setting up their own alternatives to all of these platforms. There are things that need investigating at Facebook and Google but I know of nothing warranting breaking them up.

    Before you condemn me, I hate Facebook, think social media is scourge on society. However, it seems like more than anything else that this is just sour grapes over how these private businesses conduct themselves. There is an argument to be made for the social good but it defies every argument put forth by Republicans over governments interfering with businesses. If you want to do what's best for society then you also need to behave consistently.

    You're right, few here care about the farmers but we do care about the status of Right To Repair legislation. It should be obvious that this kind of legislation is applicable to DRM and service schemes everywhere to keep tech savvy people (like slashdotters) out. You may be surprised to hear it but tons of stuff (like your car, various smart devices, etc) are all "you don't really own it" things.

    That said, I do have a friend (via IRC) that is a tech savvy farmer (in Iowa) and I would like him to hack and repair his tractors to his heart's content.

  7. You should get that treated. on Facebook Will Open a 'War Room' Next Week To Monitor Election Interference (theverge.com) · · Score: -1, Troll

    There seems to be an awful lot of people who have become "butthurt" before the election has even taken place.

    This is interesting because I'm pretty sure these are the same people who have repeated "Hillary lost, get over it" and denigrated their political counterparts for being "snowflakes" for the last two years. It's become painfully clear that these people are projecting their own issues onto others which mean they don't really believe "their" victory was legitimate and they are in fact in a fragile state ("snowflakes").

    It was confirmed before the 2016 elections took place that there was blatant interference from Russian state-actors by the US intelligence agencies (who until after the election) were considered impartial by everyone (until their conclusions came into conflict with beliefs of "snowflakes").

    In the mean time, control of 2/3 of the US government has been in hands of one political party and they've absolutely wrecked the place and international standing of the US. Many have seen this happening and so a strong rebuke from voters is imminent. Meanwhile Russian actors are continuing their campaign of interference and this time social media is going to act to counter it as well as they can. These "snowflakes" see the backlash coming and have prepared for a psychologically devastating comeuppance so they are already dismissing the election results before there has even been an election. The reality is that these social media companies are doing what they should have done previously and are countering the Russian interference campaign.

    To all of the "snowflakes," I'm not sorry for what is about to happen because you have enabled all the wrong people to lead our government. I don't mind if "you" win elections but I do mind if the elected do not uphold their oath of office by failing to perform their duties.

    I've also found this to be true and I also find it to be one of the most frustrating human behaviors. Some people seem to be paralyzed by fear, unable to cope with uncertainty and thus demand someone hold their hand to walk them though the process. What makes it worse is that this isn't something they get over, it's a pattern of behavior.

    In order to start divorce proceedings in England or Wales, you first need to have been married for at least 12 months.

    To file a divorce petition against your spouse you must prove to the court that your marriage has irretrievably broken down by establishing one of the following grounds for divorce:

    * Adultery
    * Desertion
    * Unreasonable Behaviour
    * Separation of 2 years with consent
    * Separation of 5 years - no consent required

    I sure there are legit cases of addiction to gaming but I get the feeling that it's really just one contributing factor to an unhappy marriage that is being used as an easy target for "Unreasonable Behaviour". The real question is if the number of divorces has increased or have the reasons for divorce simply shifted.

    The problem with that statement is that what's considered a plastic is chemical diverse. We do know some plastics do not have the kind of negative heath effects that BPA has because they are far more chemically stable. If you read the actual study, you'll see this is only in relation to "structurally similar bisphenols", not plastics in general.

    The real problem we have here is that companies have been allowed to use any old molecular structure in their products they wish without proving anything about the health impacts it may or may not impart.
