These industry groups lobby for strong copyright protections to...guess what...make money! Which does...guess what...increase the tax base! Which leads to...guess what...social programs and services such as police and schools and roads and the military and all those other good things.
When you download songs without paying, it's indefensible stealing. Call it what you will, argue until you are blue in the face that "copyright infringement" is not technically "theft", but the bottom line is that this is a real business that makes real money and supports the economy.
