  1. This makes sense for M$ on MS Office for Linux · · Score: 1

I think this actually makes sense for Microsoft to do. Just think about it, Windows NT costs maybe a hundred bucks or so, you can get it for free with some stuff, and we buy the licenses for $60 a seat here at the University. BUT, Office is MUCH more expensive, anyone looked at what Office 97 and what Office 2000 Pro will retail for? It's absurd. So why should MS care if you run Linux as long as you shell out several hundred bucks to buy Office, they've still got your money.

  3. Where do you get dual Socket 7 mobos? on Ask Slashdot: Is SMP worth it? · · Score: 1

Where can you buy these at? I've got an aging P233mmx, but am loathe to upgrade to a PII since I'll need a new case, new RAM, etc. but just adding a different mobo and another CPU would be keen.

  4. Who cares? It's low-res! on First Playstation 2 Screenshots · · Score: 1

I personally don't care for playing games at 640x480 interlaced that I can play at 1280x1024 non-interlaced on my PC. Until the days of HDTV are upon us, consoles can't compete in that area. Oh, and IMHO N64 has games that are more fun than playstation, with more replay value, with the exception of FF7, which is better on my PC :)

  5. MS Natural Keyboard works well, and is cheap. on Ask Slashdot:Ergo Keyboards · · Score: 1

I just use a Microsoft Natural keyboard, (version 1, the new version isn't as good, the arrow keys suck), but the key to using this keyboard is to flip up the bar underneath that raises the FRONT of the keyboard, for added wrist support. The last thing you want to do is to raise the back of your keyboard, that's only harder on your wrists. It takes a bit to adapt to this keyboard once you get it, but then you'll find that your wrists don't ache near as much, and it makes you a better typist as well. My boss has a Kinesis ergonomic keyboard, and that costs a lot more $$$ and takes a little longer to learn, but it's even more friendly to your wrists.

  6. Scour.net will scan your machine on Accidental Hacking? · · Score: 1

I've got some MP3's and other junk shared using Windows Networking here on our campus, and I've noticed that if you don't password protect your folders (I just leave mine read-only so that people can copy stuff) that a nice little agent from Scour.net comes along and catalogs your machine, then all of a sudden you wind up with about 30 people at once downloading your files using Scour's Media Agent. It gets rather annoying, so those scans may have been by Scour.net, not a hacker/cracker or even a Green Bay Packer.

  7. Pentium III's overpriced on But what of the P3? · · Score: 1

Give me an AMD K6-2 or a Celeron, that's what I've been building our new systems with at work, for the average business user who runs MS Word, Eudora, and surfs the web, those processors are more than fast enough, and there is no reason to spend an extra 400 dollars for Katmai New Instructions, they'll be as worthless as MMX (well MMX is nice for my distributed.net client, but that's it) for mainstream business users, only really useful for 3D Gaming in my opinion. I was all-AMD until the Celeron's debuted, I'm not into the politics, just the price/performance ratio.

  11. Can he install it on my computer? on Stop:Quickie Time · · Score: 1

Let's see him come install it on my computer, and I'll even let him use my hands. I've been totally frustrated trying to get X to work under RH 5.2 with my STB Velocity 4400. I once got it working in 8 bit mode, but when I tried to up the color depth, I lost it. And yes, I was using the newest version of XFree86, but I'm not a Linux guru by any stretch of the imagination.

I'll even let him use his hands.
