I think all companies have their innovative products alongside the products that just sorta get phoned in. Sure, there's a couple lazy product managers within Microsoft that are willing to ship the same boring crap over and over again. Then there's the people working on Surface that are doing serious R&D into multitouch interfaces. Even the Zune/ZuneHD are pretty innovative products that really had a lot of thought put into the interface.

  6. if i were the record companies on Spoofing P2P Networks as Marketing Plot · · Score: 2, Insightful

i think that truly spoofing P2P network protocols would be much funnier. being that the gnutella protocol is open, it wouldn't be too hard to put together a gnutella client that gave out bogus file information (saying it has files that it really doesn't) and responding to file requests by putting together mp3s that are just a repeating "don't steal music" message for the length of the track.

THEN, you could make your collect song name information (so that it'd have a nice big list of songs to fake, to trap more people) by running searches on some number of requests come through the network.

you could probably fake CRC's too, by having your client just report whatever the other clients are reporting.

hell, if you were the RIAA, you could offer free music in return for people running this spoofing client on their computers based on how much bandwidth you've contributed. i think that people would trade idle computer time for free legit music downloads.

i'm not saying that i'm against p2p networks, or even piracy for that matter. i just think it'd be interesting to see somebody go this far.

  7. note to RMS: on RMS Condemns "UnitedLinux" per-seat License · · Score: 0, Flamebait

    "fuck you."

seriously. this is not a troll. i'm sick and fucking tired of hearing RMS turn every little issue into a war. so there's a linux distro that's going to charge a per-seat license. let the consumers vote with their wallets on this one. if some company ends up spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on this distro then they deserve to lose that money for not researching the market.

what i'm willing to bet however, is that with UL being marketed towards business use, they are going to have support out the wazoo. tech support isn't free, richard.

and its not like all of the free software distributed with the distro will magically stop being free as soon as you pay for it. you will still be able to freely distribute all of the [GPL/public domain/free license of your choice] software however you feel. that's just the way it works.

next we're going to learn about corporate america, richard. having one business sell its product to another busines and expecting money is not evil. its not like the one company hijacked the other and demanded money or anything. you don't have to buy United Linux. if you can't afford it, if you don't want to buy it, if you know there's a cheaper or better alternative on the market, you don't have to spend dime one on united linux. that takes me back to my last point, let the consumers vote with their wallets. we don't need to start a fight over something as petty as linux. sure, linux is great and all, but there's really no need to get upset over it.

i'm kinda sad i don't have any programs on the UL distro, if for no other reason that to spite RMS, who really needs to drop his "rebel without a cause" act.

  8. the problem with DRM... on SACD-CD Hybrids -- A Way Out For Us Both? · · Score: 2, Insightful

the problem with DRM is that it never helps the consumer. it can only make things difficult for them.

take macrovision encoding for example. (i think its macrovision i'm talking about, either way, whatever they use on DVD's)

if you try to run your DVD player through your VCR (for instance, if you don't have enough inputs on your TV, and you just want to use the pass-through on the VCR) at this point you either have to go buy an aux box for your TV, or if you have an older TV, you have to buy an RF modulator.

the part that sucks is that all of this inconvenience doesn't give you, the consumer, anything. in no way does macrovision encoding help you. at all.

this "one copy for archival purposes" doesn't cut it. what happens if you accidentally break your backup? what happens if you lose the original? can you magically make another archival copy to replace the lost one, or are you fucked?

i like high quality audio and all, but i also like being able to make copies of whatever i want, whenever i want.

2/6/00 2600 freaks around america will have their day.

March/April 2000 MCI Worldcom will buy out AT&T, in a deal worth roughly 800 billion dollars. People shout 'monopoly!'

June, 2000 Microsoft Lindows, a combination Linux distro and GUI will be released. It will be of incredibly high quality, alas nobody in the geek community will trust it because, well, it's Microsoft, dammit!

August, 2000 Windows officially becomes 'old school'. Kids get nostalgic over win 3.11. Windows is out of print, Microsoft becomes the Atari of the computer world, and slowly vanishes without a trace. Lindows, however, is sold to an as yet unnamed company which will take it to the level of 'mainstream OS.' people will cheer! 'hooray for lindows'!

  22. z80 ramblings. on Zilog (re-)introduces the Z80 · · Score: 2

the new z-80 is a 'good thing'. here's why:
    1) This paves the way for new texas instruments graphing calculators. (many run on z80s. it would be rather simple, according to zilog, to replace them with eZ80's.)
    2) i think that there's money to be made in a z80 based business computer. you could make the hardware for real cheap, and then custom tailor an incredibly efficient operating system, and business apps. the Z80 is how many decades old? Z80 programmers know that chip incredibly well by now, so they can get their code as efficient as possible. if all of the hardware was uniform, (like playstations) you wouldn't need to bloat the o/s with support for obscure parts that almost nobody has. also, being that the o/s code is completely new, you wouldn't need legacy support! I'm telling you, Z80 computers, while not perfect for gaming, could be made to outrun a PIII running win98 any day in business apps. for much less!
