    We have 3 choices.
    1-Backwards regression by doing nothing
2-Some kind of (unobtainable) stasis, perhaps by stewardship (not viewed anywhere in nature)
3-Forwards, ie. where we are inevitably going with the entropic arrow of time. We should embrace this change and learn to master it. Space-faring is a symbol of that.

Anyway, evidence points to early organic molecules (necessary for early single cells) coming from space anyway.
So it is already potentially provable that life can traverse space.

I'm not a biologist, but by using the term 'second genesis' I am referring to a separate start point for another tree of life on Earth, ie. one that is not http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_universal_ancestor . There is no evidence for it. Which is odd, because using the premise of this article and current thinking, that bio-genesis started on Earth, shouldn't there be more evidence of it happening ? If a genesis was possible on Earth within a million years of the late heavy bombardment, then why is there no evidence of multiple parallel trees of life ? I have heard arguments that highly evolved bacterial life would wipe out any other bio-genesis. But considering some of the extreme environments we have found bacteria thriving in, it is entirely plausible to expect a second bio-genesis to have happened in one of these environments at some point in the earths history, after the bombardment.

Thanks for the link. A great author and scientist for sure. Shame about the whole intelligent design angle he went with. To me, to critique that stellar carbon is so unlikely that it had to be tweaked by a divine intelligence is quite blind, in the same way that creationist cannot understand the theory of evolution. For me, it is obvious, once you understand evolution, that the universe evolved through many different generations before it resulted in a more stable state that was right for us to emerge. Lee Smolin's cosmological natural selection theory demonstrates these processes, largely based around black holes as the source of this evolution.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmological_natural_selection#Fecund_universes

I have always thought that the reasoning behind Dark Matter, to explain the gravitational anomaly of the galaxies rotating, is bunk also. If the universe is infinite, then the dark matter phenomenon could be explained by the gravitational pull of the rest of this infinite universe.

  14. Re:Closer and closer to the earliest chance on World's Oldest Fossils Found On Australian Beach · · Score: 0

I think that they have reached THE WRONG CONCLUSION. If life arose immediately after the late heavy bombardment, and considering the discovery of similar evidence of cells on meteorites, isn't it just as likely that life was seeded to Earth ? It is astronomically UNLIKELY that the first cells evolved within a million years of the end of the bombardment. As stated, it then took billions of year for those cells to evolve into eukaryotes and multi-cellular organisms. It is FAR MORE PROBABLE that the first cells evolved out in the infinite expanses of the universe, carried to Earth by comets. Why ? Because statistically an extremely improbable event ie. the first cells, becomes far more possible when you situate it in a infinite expanse of hydrocarbons, energetic chemical reactions, near infinite resources, and comparatively static environments (compared to Earth when it was hell). If single cell life could have evolved on a volcanic Earth, without oxygen, within a few million years, then the entire universe would be teaming with life, multiple bio-genesis. Multiple bio-genesis would mean a near infinite number of intelligent species, which there obviously are not (no radio signals). My belief if that bio-genesis is extremely rare and has perhaps happened only once, at least in this galaxy. However, once it occurred it was able to spread via comets. This seems to be a solution to why single cell life arose so QUICKLY after the late heavy bombardment AND why there has been NO SECOND GENESIS ON EARTH.

well, there is every chance that there was something before the big bang. The latest theories coming from Roger Penrose (one of the proponents of the big bang), is that there are shock wave artifacts left in the universe from previous big bangs. Another idea that is gathering strength is that there STILL IS NOTHING ie. Anti-matter + matter = nothing. So the universe is a WAVE, ie. it adds up to 0, but is described by vibrations at many different frequencies, this is a theory being proposed by Laura Mersini-Houghton (though I am probably butchering it).

However, none of these theories distracts from the fact that all religions, including the bible are SOO SMALL MINDED as to be laughable. In fact, it seems like they were written by a bunch of goat herders instead of a supreme being. No religious books describe space, or gravity, or magnetism, or dna, or evolution, or electricity, or disease, or medicine. They are quite obviously written my prehistoric morons. I prefer to label religion as FARMER FICTION. It was their child-like way of describing the unknown, whilst also leveraging the fact that PEOPLE ARE SCARED OF THE UNKNOWN AND DYING. End of story.

Agreed. It is FAR more likely that the basic building blocks for live (complex reproducing molecules) occurred in a near infinite soup of hydrocarbons, ie. in nebula, than on the Earth (whilst it was volcanic and being bombarded with no atmosphere). Given such an improbable event, it becomes more likely the larger the space / greater the mix of chemicals it has to occur in + time. Also, once an event like this occurred in the universe, it would propagate throughout very quickly. eg. Once there is a reproducing molecule in a Nebula cloud, it would eventually fill that cloud. Then all you need is a passing comet / asteroid and the rest is history. This theory also has major implication for life elsewhere. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panspermia
