honestly, some of the artists excluding a handful of top 40 sellers are unusual compilations from pre-90's stars (neil diamond for example) and while i genuinely hope to see sony make ammends with consumers, there has been soooo much mixed information coming from so many sources that i honestly do not believe any typical sony cd purchaser a) understands what happened or what they should do, b) understands if that if he did undertstand, he was wrong and should rethink what he did (reapply patch, etc) or c) understand that the second revision to his understanding was wrong, and so should not have downloaded to begin with (the patch) or should just get the tunes elsewhere...how can they possibly hope for a clean fix even with a recall? the cd's are in the market, on hard drives and players already and communicating this to everybody as if it's on par with a tylenol scare is a bit absurd - privacy is paramount, but this is being presented as a deathknell to sony's consumer relationship building efforts...no amount of press or instructions or expert opinions with constantly revised advisories will help, they will only confuse - there is a need for just ONE clear and definitive statement from SONY itself, ideally a full page ad in major dailies, and this in turn should list all artists/CD's effected, and should ask for readers to tell friends. you think most neil diamon fans and britney junkies are getting the slashdot rss feed? right...
but he commented, "but as I get closer to coming back to the States and my broadband connection, I'm beginning to wonder what the life expectancy of my PC will be." - hence my comment. ALL of the ideas above and below are useless for somebody confined to govPC protocols and access restrictions...
seriously, instead of fretting over updates and upgrades, why not consider just a world of web only services for everything from email to word processing, excel-like spreadsheets, calendaring, media management and so on? there's a gigantic write up on a breed of ajax related tools (all free excluding one) broken into two parts at these two links: part 1 is http://digbig.com/4fptq and part 2 is http://digbig.com/4fptr NOTE: these should all be easily accessible, though i'm not sure of where you're at physically when looking for access and so you may experience restrictions (specific to a few middle eastern countries, just got pinged by a chum in UAE who can't get to tons of sites right now)
clearly this is designed for mobile users and with mobile access in mind...but how on earth did they pick portland as the first? come on...manhattan, boston - either would have garnered serious kudos...instead they've basically offered up a way to travel around and see the most diverse group of white people in america (second only to denver i suppose)...and what about crime data!!!! chicago is already doing this with a mashup: http://digbig.com/4fptf
image is small, but this URL will show you the console that i'm talking about - SEE that litle dial pad interface that controls the gameplay? this is clearly the precursor to all things home media, right?

aren't there more important things to worry about than claiming invention rights over on and off buttons and round and square pads? honestly, i've seen this interface already as a CHILD when coleco introduced a rounded dial-pad interface on the colecovision game console...anybody see coleco going after apple and others? no. why? not sure, are they all dead over there?
here's a list of words/phrases ending in EU that i generated using some nifty software - all are words that end with "eu" so that you can grab cool names if you're so inclined (list is enormous, this one is just a tiny little bit of it)...
cordonbleu (eg www.cordonbl.eu) and so on down this list...

Bikenibeu (a city)...actually, you know, just go do this yourself (went to cut and paste by category and realized that there are thousands of european words ending in EU - hence the great promise for the domain!!!!!...or if you want a custom list, then just ping me and i'll actually take the time to cut and paste them all for you...dave (at) gmail.pro
my move, supineplaya, is a supine position, neck and jaw clenched while holding a controller playing people on xbox360 live in a gt50 ferrari in project gotham and hearing everybody yell and swear. take deep breaths, relax abdomen, clench jaw and neck, pursing lips is optional (typically during loss stage)
from my understanding, many large drug companies already have operations in india and one recurring issue with development (research) sites is the lack of adherence to patent infringement rules in the drug discovery and development process. this issue has been written about before extensively, and quite a while back...and so now, after large conglomerates have pissed and moan to the indian government about these issues it seems to be coming full circle - but with a far less defensible position (good luck patenting 'wellness' methods).......and what will be the future for ayurvedic physicians across the usa seeking approval in the absence of a real licensure system? whatever.
not surprising, considering that mice can sing...

did you read the article at newscientist.com about rats singing (actually mice, but the author claims that his rat was a diva)....i get it in print, but it's now online - at newscientst, search for the article "romantic rodents"..."Tim Holy and Zhongsheng Guo of Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis, Missouri, recorded the vocalisations of male mice when they were presented with female pheromones and found they were far more complex than expected."
and of course, rats are much more complicated creatures, right? have you seen the crispin glover remake of willard?
this idea can't be supported with prices that go above 2 dollars per track - in fact, i would say that apple should look a little more closely at the market for ringtones authored by big and small bands - the labels take is huge, and the artists are doing better - and the carriers get serious change for every rington...until it fades, at which point prices plummet from over 2 bucks to 'way lower' (or free, if plans are throwing in monthly allowances like 5 bucks, which some do - like sprint)...and on the flip side, why not allow artists to submit and take nothing in return for lower prices to get their tracks out there in the right playlists and categories?
in fact, why doesn't apple just get with the crowd and do what myspace is doing - start a label and manufacture want for bands by massaging the data from (in apple's case) itunes activities...they should just open up a networking utility, band pages and all of that crap...it's basically message board software, right? then it's just dumped into an itunes upgrade...
right - agreed. but i'm talking about 8-10megapixel formats that have fallen way below 1000 bucks and where people who print at home are generally going no larger than 4x6 inches, in which case they are seeing a near pro level resolution - even if it's blown up a bit farther...not poster quality by any stretch of the imagination, but very solid for a home pro-am user...
price:500. 400 dollars? what do they want 300 for?

honestly, for most folks who do amateur or high-brow amateur, they're gettin' along just fine with the free stuff that came with their computer...or photoshop lite type software...what confuses me is this: apple wants to get to the serious amateurs as well as the pro's - but since the nearmidformat cameras have fallen in price dramatically (many below the cost of this software), then why on earth charge so much for the software itself? that's like begging to alienate the potential buyers below the pro level...really, this should be priced on par with 'high end' do-it-yourself home printer kits (great ones from 200-300, most below 200, but supplies are expensive)...apple would be more well served by creating a new secondary market for digital images and video stored or manipulated with their software (think: open source flash, but apple - and creative commons and share style networks for video clips, images (from aperture) and so on...) just a thought.
now that would be cool...and seriously, imagine how useful this could be..for example, really really really stupid parents could put bathing suits on the fruit of their loins and then just visually scan for major color changes (excluding the natural yellows and browns;) - then they could get 'em outta the sun before they crisp up or wash out from too much sun...
or for my dogs maybe, like a collar that lets you know if it's wicked cold in boston - in case you're so cold and dumb that you'll forget to know it's cold unless you look at your dog. are you following me? this won't work for very small dogs, they get cold very easily.
