  1. Very easy to prove censorship on China - We Don't Censor the Internet · · Score: 2, Informative
Other people have brought up the fact that companies self-censor their Chinese-audience products, for example the classic "Tianemen Square" search on gooogle.cn vs google.com. But there is other censorship as well, they like to block sites based on IP.

To see for yourself, try out: http://www.linkwan.com/vr2/#world Click the Beijing, China location. It will do a traceroute to the website of your choice, if it is reachable from China of course! (It is a java app, warning)

For example, for www.nationalpost.com (Canadian news paper):
"www.nationalpost.com was found in 25 hops. But problems starting at hop 9 in network "CHINANET backbone network" are causing IP Packets to be dropped"

    Others similarly unreachable:

    www.cbc.ca (canadian broadcasting corporation)
www.freetibet.com (funnily enough just a domain squatter)
    etc.

    Some that work :)
    www.china.com
www.xinhuanet.com (official state news agency of China)

Anyway, I found out about this when my webhost managed to get a block of their IPs banned, which prevented my hosted site (completely unrelated to the site they wanted to be banned) from being seen by my friends in mainland China since the webhost used virtual hosting to share IPs.

    So soon? :)

How odd, here in the USA I was able to pull up CM right away. Maybe you had a beta burp.

That's true (which I figured out after my original post), but you can't add it to your portfolio. At least it's smart enough to only put the "Add to Portfolio" link on the stock summary page for American listed stocks..

you can type in the name of a company in the same spot you would type in a ticker symbol. That's why, below that box, it offers the tip, 'e.g. "Google", "Cars", "AAPL"'. Indeed, you can just type in the type of company ("Cars") -- try "search engine," for example, and you get links to listings for 50+ companies that (presumably) all have search engines.

Hmm good point, the google search box is always at the top... searching for cars wil give you the list of car related companies, which can take you to a specific company, which then you can click "Add to Portfolio"... which ends up back on the Add to Portfolio page for you to add the cost basis and number of shares. Nice. Seems like a lot of page flipping to do this, but I guess the other sites are just as bad.

Ya Ya. Anyway, beta didn't used to mean "product with unfinished requirements and no testing", but I guess in this new age of internet web 2.0 buzzwords...

Anyway... You can look at the charts for international companies with it (ie http://finance.google.com/finance?q=CM ) but not add them to the portfolio. Seems like this last step would have been the "easy" part.

Anyway, I'll just have to monitor it and see if things improve. I do like the interactive chart.

Hey, good point! I searched for Berkshire, it turned up the class A shares as "BRK.A". I was able to add that to my portfolio fine. However, adding BRK.B gives me the old can't find symbol. Perhaps I'll check in again in 2009 like another poster in this thread suggests.

    Add CM to my portfolio....

hmm.. "Could not find the requested symbol"

Right, and no symbol search for the noobs.. that's going to be convenient. Oh well, try Adding CM.TO instead.

"We will support international symbols soon"

Right. Then maybe I'll give it a try "soon". Back to yahoo for me. (Add this to the other complaints people are having)

  8. You did nothing wrong... on Computer Jobs -- How to Resign Professionally? · · Score: 1

Hi, I'm sure I'm echoing what many people are saying here, and I'll say that you did nothing wrong. You did the professional thing, which is to notify them that they need to find a replacement for you within 2 weeks, and for those 2 weeks you are still available to wrap things up, train your replacement, etc. Just like how they will deactive your cards/email/account/etc. to "inform" you that you are being laid off, getting your pay in lieu and shown the door seems to be pretty common.

However, in MY experience I have never had that happen to me. Each of the companies I have left, I gave my notice, and I kept working for the two weeks before moving on to the next company. Perhaps it was the nature of the company (very small, so everyone from the CEO down knew me) or my line of work (Software Developer rather than SysAdmin), or maybe (probably) there was TooMuchStuffToDo(tm) and they really could use the extra hand. (One time I was even kept on for a while as a contractor part time...)

So, I guess it depends. But don't take it personally. It's JustBusiness(tm). And, hell, 2 weeks pay for not doing work isn't something I'd complain about. You can sit at home, surf the web, post on Fark or something, then go onto your new job. Not too shabby.
