In this case its probably somewhat a victim of its simplicity. Its trivial to bang out a flashlight app so its probably a good choice for malware/crapware, and it doesnt set the bar high for getting plenty of +5 ratings
But in general, yeah its sad. I'd like to see Google come up with some form of reputation credentials. I like the openness of Google Play as opposed to Apples Walled Garden, but this is a huge downside. I think Play should list the permissions in the play store summary, rather than have to download the app before finding out it wants my SSN and a DNA sample. Even a perfunctory automated test before putting it in the store would be a big improvement. Google could certainly come up with something better than I could think up. But right now the signal to noise ratio in the Play store is getting pretty low lately.
Exactly. The must be a good 50 flashlight apps but I cant find a single one that doesnt run ads or need dubious privileges. I even started with highest price ones first and they still want too much info. (If you know of one please let me know). But very common to want my phone book, ability to place calls, access the GPS location, modify SD card contents, and so on.
Sometimes its explainable - I install GPS Status paid version, and when it asked for full network access I emailed the dev, and he answered quickly saying he got lazy and loads all the help screens from the web. So OK, yeah maybe.
The average user I hear from all complain about poor performance, unstable operation, and high data charges, and dont understand that its because they installed 100 free crapware apps.
Bit of a woosh, I was just going for a +1 funny:-) I really know almost nothing about the 'gap' other than some History Channel dribble about how that was when he lived with the aliens. Is there really some reputable work explaining it? If you have a cite Id be interested.
From your sig & handle, you from Alaska? Very cool, have always wanted to spend some time there.
Actually I was thinking more along the lines of Hitchhikers, and Oolon Colluphid Jr's trilogy of philosophical blockbusters: Where Jesus Went Wrong, Some More of Jesus's Greatest Mistakes, and Who Is This Jesus Person, Anyway? "I refuse to prove that I exist", says Jesus, "for proof denies faith and without faith I am nothing." "But", says Man, "a complete historical record would be a dead giveaway wouldnt it? So an INCOMPLETE record proves you exist, and therefore you dont, QED."
WTF is "locked in"? Or what is a "locked in printer" in general for that matter? I have one, I use it nearly every day, and if there is anything "locked in" Im completely missing it. I do use 123D Design for modeling, but also Sketchup and Solidworks and Ive tried others and they happily interoperate. I get PLA from China, aftermarket parts from eBay, and Makerbot even supports that. Their website even promotes open source 3d modeling software.
The API is the STL file format, which is pretty open. Just about any CAD program can generate one. Thats fed into either the Makerbot slicer or the open source Skeinforge slicer to generate the X3G files that get sent to the 'Bot. What do you want to do that needs more openness than that?
The Bank Event Horizon - Many years ago this was a thriving, happy planet - people, cities, shops, a normal world. Except that on the high streets of these cities there were slightly more banks than one might have thought necessary. And slowly, insidiously, the number of the banks were increasing. It's a well-known economic phenomenon but tragic to see it in operation, for the more banks there were, the more they had to charge and the more had to be borrowed to pay for it. And the more they borrowed the higher the fees became, and the more the banks proliferated, until the whole economy of the place passed what I believe is termed the Bank Event Horizon, and it became no longer economically possible to build anything other than banks. Result - collapse, ruin and famine. Most of the population died out. Those few who had the right kind of genetic instability mutated into beings with no buttocks to carry wallets.

You may be right, but then again a) Musk doesnt seemed very worried, and b) if good fuel cells became available he's in a better position than most to adopt them.
We are on topic. NPOV means stick to facts, not attacks. Truth undermines poor decisions and supports good decisions. What possible objection could you have to posting factual wikipedia content? How is anyone served by not posting? I dont see a downside and you have not postulated one. I would probably be satisfied with the notation even if you wrote it, if you could dial your emotions down to, say, 9.
"Ad hominum"? You mean that thing you started? Bloody hypocrite.
What I called for and what you seem incapable of understanding is that I specifically asked for a NPOV article, "Neutral Point Of View". Not slander, not a lynch mob, not a riot - a citation of the facts of the case without emotion or taint. That you accuse me of doing otherwise is completely your childish emotional investment in your opinions.
While Im glad you read the case, none of your points address the main point of the article, which you dont seem to get:
"The tipping point for the Court comes from evidence that the defendants – in their own words – are hackers. By labeling themselves this way, they have essentially announced that they have the necessary computer skills and intent to simultaneously release the code publicly and conceal their role in that act." The key point was according to the judge the "hacker" term.
And where did the judge get this from? From a magazine called "Entertainment and Technology" in an article called "Hacking for Lulz".
Here on slashdot I shouldnt have to talk about the term "hacker" and its various meanings, hopefully you can agree that there are many interpretations and uses, especially when referring to oneself. At issue is how the defendant used the term to describe himself, and if the judge was correct in interpreting the term as malicious, and its absolutely clear from the ruling he did.
The statement that "it is common for such individuals to simply delete data..." and so on was made by the plaintiff so no fair attributing it to the judge as part of the order. It was not.
You seem to take umbrage that the guy is guilty as sin. He may well be, Im not defending him in the least. I do in fact trust that the courts generally get these things right, and if you review my past comments (you probably did) you will see I've said this many times and been modded down for not being on board the lynch mob. I probably agree with 90% of your statements. But TFA's point is that the judge suspended due legal process (and clearly stated that he did so and with considerable concern to precedent). And he did this because he chose an arbitrary definition of "hacker" that he got from a magazine article and used that to define intent and malice on the part of the plaintiff. I think it is a stretch, that it relies on a technically uninformed stereotype out of Hollywood than real life, and insufficient grounds to suspend the constitutional right to due process. TFA and TFS correctly point out that technical ability, whether self-professed or not, should not be the basis for suspension of civil rights.
Agree or not, how the heck do you make the leap from me suggestion a fair and neutral notation in Wikipedia, as "lynching", "not following the rule of law", "starting riots", "calling for slander", "tar and feathers"? Your wild ranting accusations in no way have anything to do with anything I posted.
In what way does "marked by absence of restraint" not apply to totally unnecessary and condescending use of profanity? And if not this, then what are you arguing against on your homepage? At least have the self-awareness to smile at the irony.

There are too many gaps in the historical record for him to be made up. If he was fiction there would be better records.
"50 Shades of Red White and Blue"? Or was it that Loyalist best-seller "Deep Throne"?

+1 (insightful funny flamebait), nice trifecta!
Stop. You had me at "Saturn would float".

That says a lot about the state of the financial sector and the economy in general. Sort of like shoe shops in Hitchhikers.
I imagine the SEC would care if they are falsifying data.
You're new here, right?
You know, Palm. The remnants of which will be sold to Facebook. So they can call it FacePalm.
And that is all I ever suggested. Now go post it :-)
Funny insightful troll - the trifecta of mods.

Real experts don't want to go to the trouble of battling with presumptuous morons over the Internet.
The more you know, the less you say. And vice versa.

What the fuck makes you think...
and from your /. page:
I regard rampant profanity as a brilliant mark of stupidity.
So thanks for making that point for me.
