  1. Correct me if I am wrong... on UK Police Want DNA of 'Potential Offenders' · · Score: 1

... but isnt this a violation of personal freedoms and rights? I may just be an ignorant Canadian, but shit like this scares the crap out of me. I don't trust any government that requires DNA or any biometric sampling (unless I commit a crime).

With all the new changes to Britan, and similarities to the USA, I am becoming increasingly wary to travel to such countries. If the government doesnt trust the people, then it's time for a new government (since it is FOR the people BY the people).

  2. Weekend Experience on Why Aren't More Linux Users Gamers? · · Score: 1

I played WoW (World of Warcraft) this weekend for about 3 days, but I didnt play it in Windows.

I got it working absolutely fantastically in GNU/Linux (SuSE 10.3) very easily. Everything was turned up (except grass density, that caused noticable choke) and I was pulling about 90-120 FPS steady. I am on a fairly beefy machine, but I am not SLI'ing, nor am I going to extremes to get this setup. The _ONLY_ driver I have ever had to hunt for, for my current system is my Graphics Driver (nVidia). As for configuration, all I had to do was double-check that wine was using ALSA, and use the command "wine WoW.exe -opengl".

The only reason I switched back to Windows was to play Team Fortress 2, not because I cant play TF2 in GNU/Linux, but because there are a few key features missing. I cannot use the friends list (for steam) in GNU/Linux, and I do not have Ventrilo reliably setup just yet. Should I be able to get the Friends list working reliably, I will play TF2 in GNU/Linux as I get about 45-90 FPS with almost all settings on.

As for Gaming in GNU/Linux, there are many ways to improve the situation.

    1) Actually play games in GNU/Linux. Yes, you like the OS, now actually use it. Does the game you want to play not quite work properly? Try another. Get in the habbit of using GNU/Linux ACTUALLY FOR GAMING. You'll start to find that you might like GNU/Linux more, and actually be more motivated to assist others with Gaming in GNU/Linux.

    2) Support teams that work on getting more Gaming in GNU/Linux. Groups such as wine ( winehq.com ), cedega ( transgaming.com ), linux gamers ( linux-gamers.net ), and I am certain there are many more. You can support these groups in many ways on many levels. Support them by finding bugs, telling the devs about the bugs, voting on bugs you want fixed, reporting good/bad/terrible performance reviews, _DONATE_ to the teams, buy them pizza, challenge them to their favourite game, _WRITE CODE THAT FIXES BUGS_, recommend certain groups/apps that help to people, etc.

    3) Talk to your gamer friends about your experiences. Maybe they will join you.

    4) Show the devs of teams that you play their games in GNU/Linux, contact them, request better support or possibly even native deployment of the games in GNU/Linux. There are several dev teams that already release games natively for GNU/Linux (ID Soft, EPIC Games, CCP (Eve Online)).

    5) Think up new ways to stir up support for gaming in GNU/Linux.

The fact of the matter is, it is getting easier and easier to game in GNU/Linux, we need to start increasing the visible support for gaming in GNU/Linux by actually doing it, writing about it, talking to dev teams, talking about it publically ourselves, etc. We as a community need to DO and GROW. The rest will follow.

  3. When will it end? on US Group Calls Canada a Top Copyright Violator · · Score: 1

So they want us to change. Will we? Do we want to? So far looks like neither are true.

But my concern is, when are the USA going to stop imposing their beliefs on others? They sure seem to be imposing their own beliefs on many other countries, not just ours.

My biggest fear, isn't that I might have to pay for material (I already do). My biggest fear, is that they might win, and turn my lovely country into something I purposely avoid; The USA.

I really do not like where the USA has gone, and is going. Every time I hear about major "Security" law changes in the USA, it always makes me feel scared to even enter the country. Every time I learn more about the underlying structure, and hidden structure in the legal and financial aspects of the USA, I yet again feel more scared to enter the country.

I don't want that to happen to my precious Canada. I don't want to have to resort to leaving just to avoid foreign pressure.

In all due respect, "Americans", Fuck Off. We're not interested in your policy, and we keep indicating that. We are your partners, not your slaves, not your subordinates, not below you in any fashion. Now go home, and grow up.

Not all optical drives come with software to play DVD media. In fact a lot do not. Mpeg2 codecs don't come free I'm afraid.

As for the USB reference, I didn't suggest booting from USB, I suggested using a USB stick after the OS has booted (should they be completely inept at using LiveCDs).

I think you fail to realize that a lot of LiveCDs include burning software, so you can actually test the device without booting the installed OS.

The privacy of the citizen should be protected AT ALL TIMES. There are legal methods of obtaining evidence for a reason, and there are mechanisms within that for additional reasons, which empower the Police and government to obtain such evidence without invading innocent civilians' privacy, in theory.

Assigning a repair shop to install a dvd-burner does not grant them permission to access anything other than what they need to. They do not need to go into the OS to test it (hello, linux livecd?). If they do not know enough, and "need" to go into the OS, they do not need to go through any files on the computer at all; hello USB memory stick and trial nero.

The fact of the matter is, a certain computer company got in a big shit storm for stealing porn/files off of one of their clientell just earlier this year (Circuit City?). Yet somehow they get away with this kind of behaviour AGAIN, only because it is "Child Porn".

In some fucked up conspiracy ran world, one might argue that Circuit City planted the files there.... to try and save face from their earlier transgression....

GPL3 is merely a new alternative, and while you have to convert-or-die (to gpl3) in a sense where you cannot have GPL2 and GPL3 together (I think, corrected me if I am misreading) that isn't the end-all-be-all of the GNU frontier and mentality. if I were paid even a little bit for recommending an album, or a song to someone, that they bought, I would be motivated to share music so much more.

This seems to bridge the gap between the concept of sharing music because its good to share, and the ability to make money. Plays 3 times before expiring? Okay, not exactly what I want, but this incentive to share by getting something back if they buy the item, is a winner.
