Looking at this woman's web site it seems pretty obvious to me that she is looking for publicity. She seems to be operating from right on the "fringe". This is certainly not the first time that I have seen people operating on the fringe make outlandish claims and oddball self proclaimed terms and policies on the web while stubbornly ignoring any logic, or reasonably means to accomplish their goal. As others have said, if she didn't want her material archived she had plenty of options which she either did not understand how to use or flat out refused to use. Now the threats of litigation and unreasonable lawsuits, etc. are par for the course. This is another typical path the fringe element frequently takes.
Having a math degree has probably gotten me more jobs in CS than had I had a CS degree. If you want a "computer programming" job you should have a basic math background and focus on learning how to program, i.e. C++ Java, VB, etc. Private industry HR deps seem to like that stuff because it sounds cool and impressive. If you want to work in "computer science" or related are a good math background and solid reasoning/problem solving ability is probably more important than knowing VB,.NET or Java. Some good courses that I would recommend.
Calculus (levels 1-2)
Linear Algebra
Abstract Algebra (essential if you want to design cryptosystems)
Combinatorial Analysis
Probability Theory
Graph Theory
"Discrete mathematics"
to name a few. The latter courses are probably more important than the calculus but, a working knowledge of the Calculus and the concepts of limits, differentiation and integration are quite worthwhile.
Booze is not sold to kids and providing it to them is a crime. In some European families it was considered ok to give a young adult a little taste of wine during dinner. Indeed,my grandfather used to let me sample his wine now and then. If anything it taught me the concept of moderation and not drinking to excess and not every day. Hookers ? Most hookers won't service a minor and most minors are not out looking for them. If he needs a hooker when he comes of age he's going to find one regardless.
Porn was notpermitted in my house when i was a child and my parents would have been quite irritated had they found me looking at it. But it was everywhere else and sooner or later I was exposed to it. In those days parents didn't talk to kids about sex so porn wass pretty much where you got your "education". Most either outgrew it or learned to take it in context and not become obcessed with it.
Kids are going to see, hear and learn these things no matter how hard you try and hide them and sheild them. It's better they learn to take it in stride and over time it rapidly looses it's shock value.
Some of the people I have know who got into the worst trouble, i.e. jail, death, injury, crime, were the ones who led the most sheltered lives and where unprepared for reality whence they had to face it.
What is the purpose of a Segway ? I can see it as a novely item, a wayof saying "hey, look what technology can do". beyond that, who needs one ?? What's wrong with using the 2 legs you were born with ? Besides, walking is a good excersize, keeps and improves the circulation to the legs and feet, helps build endurance, good for the heart, lungs, muscles, etc. It's a great way to prevent ourselves from turning into overweight diabetic louts or helps reverse that trend if one is already headed in that direction. It offers no speed advantage over a bicycle or an electric or gas scooter. For the cost of one Segway I can buy more than one good quality bicycleor even a powered scooter that needs no software updates.
My conclusion ?? Segwayis a nice novely toybut, who needs it ?
If you can'tdesign a website so that it's ADA compatable then you should not be in the business. Go back and learn how to do it properly. Then try again. If you are in the business of building websites then you should strive for excellence, which means following standards, making things accessible and compliant, and educating yourself as to how to do it properly if you can't. If you get sued for making a non-ADA compliant website then it's your own fault and you have nobody to blame but yourself. Don;t like the sound of what I'm saying then tough. That's the way it is.
So, they are going to acquire a database of these images and then compute a checksum to identify the images and then match them against files that users download. And what happens if someone accidentally downloads one of these images ? Say as part of some spammers email or maybe attached to a newsgroup post or by accidentally hitting a bogus link on a website. Does that person now get busted for downloading CP ?? I am against CP just as much as the next guy. But can this eventually lead to people getting in troublke for something they did not willfully do ??
Abandoning compulsory education is not the answer. What is really needed is sensible schools with sensible policies and sensible administrators (if they can be found these days). When I was in school the kind of things I read about happening in schools today did not happen. Expulsions were extremely rare. Detentions and suspensions happened but only for things like brutal fights or direct malicious vandalism. And even then it was only for a day or so and never made the papers. These days I hear stories about first graders being handcuffed and arrested in schools, kids being expelled for carrying a boy scout knife, fopr what they think or say outside of school and for countless other things that were considered non-issues years ago. O think we need to take a long hard look at the mindset of some of these people in charge of schools these days. Perhaps they are taking things a bit more seriously than they really need to.
And you mean the kid was suspended for that ?? Back when I was in school that was considered normal school behavior. Sounds like these scool administrators are too sensitive these days.
I agree. Turning programming into a tightly constrolled profession, (like pharmacy) would inhibit innovation. Limiting accessibility of programming tools, network analysis tools, compiles, debuggers, etc. to only certain individuals would limit the ability of others to learn, experiment, tinker, and develope useful things. Plus, thoise who invest the time and money in a license are going to be more apt to look for a monetary return on and investment rather than engage in a project and volunteer time out of sheer interest and passion for what they are good at. It is likely that many of the useful things we take for granted today would not exist if software development was a tightly controlled, limited and stricktly licensed profession with harsh penalties for violators. And if they did ever adopt such a system it is unlikely to have any affect on whatever bad guys are out there..
Yeah, at the price of underpaying and exploiting it's workforce. Crushing the idea of small community run business, and squashing like bugs any employees who try to organize to fight the rotten business practives of this behemoth monstrocity. Wall mart may be a wonderful company but a bad thing for America and American labor,
True, but it involves making another investment. If the wireless phone companies are going to charge for both dialed and received calls then the phone should be designed to block wronmg/unwanted numbers by default. It shouldn;t have to require an additional investment.
A theorem is not a theorem without it's proof.
Yes, of course they should be included. What is mathematics without the very logical arguments which make it mathematics ?

Good, the French should show them the door. And remind them not to let the door hit them on the way out.

If Rush and Sean are saying it's a myth then it's most definately true.
