Which is discriminatory, the military isn't exactly an equal opportunity employer. There're plenty of folks out there that aren't eligible to enlist for one reason or another but are perfectly suitable for jobs of this nature. Bumping people, particularly in the period of a recession, who didn't have that option is just plain wrong.

That's not accurate, it really depends upon where the sale is considered to have taken place. If I go on vacation to Ohio, my home state wouldn't be able to collect tax on it. However if I buy something online from home and the retailer is in Ohio then there would be an argument as to where exactly the sale took place. I suspect that would be at my home as that's ultimately where I take possession of the goods.

It's more than that, even if I did want to pay the tax I'm not even sure where or how to do it. I don't even know where I would get the form to fill out as my state has no income tax and as such doesn't generally expect to get tax forms from citizens that aren't engaged in commercial activity.

The current problem is that it's extremely onerous for folks to keep those records as I would literally have to keep the receipts and figure out where to send the check. I hear tell that in most other states there's a line on the income tax form to add sales tax, but we don't have an income tax here so if the retailer doesn't collect it things quickly get out of hand.

With the exception of the police, fire departments and schools you can propose reasonable metrics that can evaluate that. However with police, fire departments and schools it's actually extremely complicated assessing whether money is being well spent in most cases. For police and fire response time is a huge factor, but it's hardly the only factor and it's ultimately intertwined with other ones as well. The local police department had to find more money because of a sudden gang war that's broken out recently.

Or you have absolutely no clue how expensive things are. Services have been cut back pretty substantially over the last 3 decades or so to the point where infrastructure is beginning to literally fall down. It's not the spending that's the issue it's the refusal to collect the taxes necessary to maintain what we have.

Around here the infrastructure has been crumbling since at least the late 70s and it's gotten to the point where the city is just working on the worst streets first and has a tremendous backlog. And this is a city in which the voters generally understand that we need to pay taxes to maintain and invest in the infrastructure.

They're not inconsequential they're enough to prevent Firefox and law abiding distros from including the support. Somebody has to pay for the license fee, and the money could otherwise be used to pay for other things.

As far as that goes, there's absolutely no guarantee that in the future the licensing fee will be that low. They would be well within their rights to raise rates in the future. On top of that it's a licensing fee per software to encode and decode, the total amount of money is not small for most projects.

No, the reason for that is that pirates don't pay licensing fees for using codecs. The rest of us ultimately do pay for licensing those codecs or we do without.

As for why, the reason why is that h.264 isn't free for use, which means that Linux and Firefox and all the other free software out there would have to either start charging or nudge people to a pirate codec package.

At this point, it's mostly just the hardcore conservatives and mentally enfeebled that are still touting a GOP candidate as the winner next election. There is still quite a bit of time left before the election, but it would require a whiplash inducing flip flop for any of the current GOP candidates to win over the moderates necessary to win the election.

Without providing figures, Barnes & Noble said Microsoft was demanding the same amount in patent fees that it would charge users of its Windows Phone operating system.

I can't blame them for crying foul, the patents themselves are a minor portion of MS' total IP related to Windows Mobile and yet they're expecting to charge B&N the same price as if they were licensing Windows Mobile. That's not a matter of being unable to afford the patents, that's a matter of not being able to afford to license an OS that they're not going to use.

This isn't fundamentally any different than MS making it really hard to buy laptops without their OS.

At this point most of the cheap easy to do experiments, at least as far as Newtonian Mechanics go, have already been done by somebody.
