  1. Re:for the same reason they're all widescreen now on Users Want Matte LCDs While Glossy Screens Dominate · · Score: 1

Widescreens are nice, the problem is that most WMs don't handle them well. Personally, I'd like my WM to allow me to carve out chunks of real estate for windows. So I could drag a window to a part of the screen and have it confined to that portion of the display, without having to go the route of making that a completely separate X server. I don't think that Win or OSX is doing any better in that respect at this stage.

Not to mention the pain when you dare to combine monitors that aren't of the same resolution in a multi monitor set up.

  2. Re:What about non-widescreen laptops? on Users Want Matte LCDs While Glossy Screens Dominate · · Score: 1

I don't agree, wider monitors make many of the tasks I do more of a pain. It's fine with my netbook with it's wee small monitor to give me wider over taller, but not so much for my other monitors. It's gotten so bad that I've taken to setting up my windows so that they take up the full height and half the width of the monitor.

The problem is that a lot of programs will happily use the entire width with little if any thought given to usability. For small and medium size monitors it works fine, but I've got two monitors, one is 22" and the other is 24" and reading /. and similar without making adjustments is a real pain as I have to traverse the entire width of the monitor to read each line of text.

But at only 1900 horizontal pixels it's not quite wide enough to comfortably sit two windows on the monitor without one of the windows having scroll bars.

  3. Re:Glossy screens and sunlight on Users Want Matte LCDs While Glossy Screens Dominate · · Score: 1

It's a laptop, if a person didn't mind being stuck in doors to compute, we would probably still be using something akin to a modern Osborne. Laptops are intended to be used inside or outside (assuming it's not raining) and being restricted to indoors by the screen is silly.

The fact that one can do work on it shouldn't have any relation to the fact that a portable computer is significantly more useful when one can use it outdoors on nice days.

  4. Re:Couple other things too on Users Want Matte LCDs While Glossy Screens Dominate · · Score: 1

True, but then you end up having to put some other coating on it in order to use the computer outside. I've got a netbook with a glossy screen and it can be really hard to use due to the glare on the screen. So, I tend to bump the brightness to compensate, but even that doesn't help much on sunny days.

I've got the T240HD in front of me and it's wonderful. I don't even bother to have it display movies at 16:9 because the extra stretch isn't noticeable.

It's kind of sad that my circa 2002 VAIO had more vertical pixels than most monitors these days. I'm sure at the high end there are taller ones, but it's hard to find more than 1080 vertical these days.

It's not anywhere near good enough to replace a sleep lab, but if you've already eliminated the possibilities that require more granularity it's great for training a person to sleep better.

That's not true. For quite a while you could get digital images converted to ones that could be put in a slide projector. Or onto regular 35mm film for creating normal prints from digital.

I think that has fallen by the wayside as other forms of printing have been advancing.

That wouldn't surprise me, airlines have gotten so cheap in recent years that paying for a seat doesn't guarantee that you'll get one that's size appropriate for an adult. Unless you're really diminutive in stature or a woman. As an individual of a healthy weight I should be able to buy a ticket and know that I'm going to be sold the entire seat rather than ridiculously small ones they sell now.

I'm wondering if they're going to be making a distinction between rooting and unlocking. My Nexus One was unlocked using just the stock tools that Google provided through HTC for that specific purpose. There's no reason why I can't just re-lock the phone and none but Google and myself is the wiser.

It seems to me that given that I didn't need to download any cracks that it shouldn't count against me. Owners of handsets that needed to be rooted in order to be unlocked may be in a different situation. Although they too ought to be allowed to access the marketplace.

But, at this point, I'd like to see some sort of citation from the blogger that's making these claims. I can't help but notice that the blurb about the author says something about an iPhone review site. Not that that means there's something nefarious about it, but it does lead one to wonder whether the information is credible given the only citation is to another blog that doesn't itself reference anything to back the allegation up. Sounds like it could just be a case of FUD or a misunderstanding.

I think the main concern was interference with the flight electronics. You know sort of the way modern cell phones interfere with speakers. I would think that it would be easily enough fixed, although it does get more complicated than usual as you can't just throw more shielding at the problem until it's definitely solved.

I'm not sure why this would be a problem with older planes, the ones that were prior to the fly by wire innovations, those you'd just have to make sure the cockpit was shielded from the seating area whatever that's called. These days they have to worry about more than just the instrument panel getting funky.
