Not only this... which is true. But I want some CD's say Judy and Mary that are only commercially available in Asia. The music industry in Asia much like the anime industry has not really worried much about mp3's in area's where their records aren't commercially available.
I dunno about other Colleges.. but there are two factors around mine that have made CD sales drop. 1) A mainstream band perfroms every week on campus 2) In order to gain income the vendors in the area have hiked up their prices in the area. Even the people who can't afford internet are pirating.. by copying CD's from the libraries of the area.
Actually.. if I remeber correctly it is the School. Precidence. Johns Hopkins University was fined several thousand dolllars three years ago when two students ran mp3 FTP's from their dorm connections. Since then the school has setup a scanner server that went through the network several times a day looking for shares with MP3's. From certain students that were emailed notices they even had the scanner try to break in with common passwords. Its also an annoying bandwidth eater. Leave it up to the BME's to make a scanner that brings down the network..oh well.
A couple of days ago, in this very messaging board, somebody proposed a brilliant idea: instead of something useless like SETI or cracking RC5, one could dedicate those cycles to analysing satellite data that could help farmers plan crops.
Forgive me if I am wrong, but first living in a state that has 80%-15% Rural/urban ration, I've noticed that a lot of farmers might be resistant to the idea of a computer telling them what crops to plant. I mean... if a computer told them to flood their fields and only plant rice, what happens when the price of rice in the market they are selling in is insignificant next to corn. Are we going to force them out of thier houses because they can't pay the bills so we can send free food out of the country? Secondly, most farmers who don't mind having a computer help them already use the system that is available to them using infrared satellight imagery, GPS monitors in thier farm equipment, and computers designed to do nothing but work on making the farmers lives easier. And from my understanding.. a lot of this has been subsidized by the Department of Agriculture.

Finally lets look at the old antage:
If you give a man a fish he can feed himself for one day, but if you teach him how to fish he can eat for the rest of his life.
After having visitied many third world countries through work, I will say this much, between the corruption all along the different links in getting the handouts to the people, handouts should only be a temproary measure. What we need to do is help the people learn what and how to do in order to manage their own economies. I do contribute food to shelters and food kitchens, and I think this is a good thing.. and many people I know do this to make themselves feel better about themselves, that they do not feel completely selfish.
If some people wish to help farmer, let them help farmers, if some people wanna help SETI let them help SETI. It is ridiculous to flame people about it.
It seems that more and more Anime title are beign accepted into the American mainstream. While I do like to see this, I am worried about how people are going to be affected by all the English dubbing. There have always been pros and cons with subtitles and English dubbing, but I truly didn't feel the impact of this until this recent year when I joined the Anime Club at my college. Luckily Tenchi's dub is one of the better ones I have heard, however this is not the case. For those of you watching Tenchi on the Cartoon Network, you've probably also seen clips of Gundam Wing, if not the series. About five months before the Cartoon network started airing Gundam we were watching the subbed version in the club. Well, I can say this much. The voices just do not seem to match the character's.. and some of the characters don't even act the same. At this point I am ignoring how overboard the censorship went for the episodes shown at 5:30 on the channel. (i.e. changing "I will kill you" to "I will destroy you" to be a kinder and gentler space mercinary) This has particularly frightened me now that Rurouni Kenshin has been licensed in the US. To many people Kenshin is as popular as Tenchi and Fushigi Yuugi, however, there was a small distribution of test dubs to small stations a few months ago unde the title "Samurai X." I have seen some clips of this and the voices were horrifing. I know there are many people who would rather have dubs then subs, so... I am wondering... if an anime channel is made, which there has been talk about, wouldn't it be an interesting idea if the closed caption transmitied the subtitles and the spanish audio channel transmited the japanese version of the soundtrack? I am not sure how viable this is... but I would certainly like to see this. And now a shameless plug as we are always seeking memebers JHAC
For those of you using Bell Atlantic DSL, and having trouble with it, you may want to check out http://www.telocity.com. Having just set up a new phoneline and DSL for my apartment at school, I have become very disturbed at Bell Atlantic's ineptitude. In reviewing DSL service, at first I couldn't see anything good about paying ten dollars more for Atlantic Bell then the fifty dollars a month for Telocity. Looking into the features of each Telocity easily became a better deal, with 3 emails, *nix support, a static ip, 24/7 support, and remote dialup if you are away from home. However the truth of the service became even more clear as I waited for my phoneline to get hooked up. Bell Atlantic, although I do have phoning capability, is still reading a dead line when they test my line from headquarters. Telocity's DSL test, however, confirmed that while my telephone in Bell Atlantic's database was faulty, Telocity's real time testing tools confirmed that my line was both operational and ready for DSL. Basically be very very careful with both phone companies and DSL providers... had I relied on the phone company to confirm my line was working properly I probably would have had to wait months for DSL and more then likely had to use them. I am very glad I did not get burned.
Well the ethonal which is the fuel, is basically grain alcohol made from corn. I am not sure if you can even try to ferement the corn oil to get the alcohol, but I am sure the cost of the still and license to make it would be too expensive;)
Actually, the gas station workers and their families would most likely not be out of a job. The government of midwestern states such as Ohio have already started a strong campaign promoting corn powered vehicles. In collabiration with this, many gas stations have already installed new pumps or refitted standard pumps and now sell both petrol and ethanol.
