    Uninterruptible power supply?

A select number of "critical servers" were powered by UPS and completely unaffected. The rest, I guess, are not critical. I've heard that this "power failure" was actually caused by an "unscheduled scheduled" power outages ... there is a consistent yearly number of days, which are reportedly chosen at random, on which brownouts are enacted. Apparently, nobody but the powers that be know when these are supposed to occur.

Only one popular *desktop* OS, that is. Given that condition, your statement is indisputable. But for servers, or even workstations, that is not as much the case today as it was 10 years ago. There are now, thankfully, many more apt choices for server OSes than Windows alone, specifically Linux (many stable distributions) and even OS X. And since these index functions can be installed on many of these systems, it's an issue worthy of note for most sysadmins.

  4. nothing new on Yahoo Considers Offering Prizes to Search Users · · Score: 0

Users of certain sites have been falling for such ploys for years. I remember five years ago, an ex-coworker of mine used to keep a certain search page as his home page, and he would visit the page at least ten times dirung the workday, and each time he'd sit there and refresh the page about fifty times, in hopes of being granted one of these prizes. In a typical workweek, that would have given him 2500 chances per week. He did this everyday for the two years during which I worked with him: about 260000 times. And, surprise: he never won a thing. But he gave that site plenty of hits in the process.

Sadly enough, I guarantee that, despite some opinions, some people will fall for this.

Despite all the bashing, I am sorry to hear this. The first two movies were nothing short of masterful, and we could do (and have already seen) a lot worse for sequels to have another one from this line. Kids all over the world (and me) are going to be very disappointed.

  8. Go for it Google on Google to Compete with iTunes? · · Score: 1

I can't tell you how many people I know that have gotten iPods because "they're cool" and because they just didn't know better, then got their iPod home and became completely intimidated by the iTunes environment, which cunningly gives the impression that you need to buy all your iPod music from iTunes. There are ways around this, but the technically-challenged are bullied into buying songs they already have. If Google does indeed embark on this mission to challenge iTunes, I hope they'll keep this in mind for casual users, as well as provide options for those who are a bit more in-the-know as far as technology goes. A solution with alternatives would be grand.

Most Azureus users aren't using it for its "plug-in system and huge range of tweakable settings" as quoted here... while these are nice, they're also comparable to features on other clients. The big difference is system resource consumption: Azureus can use 1/3, or as much as 50%, less memory than most other clients.

  10. cool on Adobe Lightroom Review · · Score: 1

I, for one, will be glad if this app does as the review seems to promise. Yes, I agree that digital photo editing isn't rocket science. But for the casual PC user, or someone who just wants to batch-edit a quantity of images, firing up an entire software suite can be a bit of a bore. An app that has something to offer to a wide user base, ranging from the technically-challenged to the self-proclaimed power user and beyond, will be a welcome addition to the common market.

Now, can we please have a similar app for video production?

  11. astigmatism on Computers, Long Hours and Vision Problems? · · Score: 1

You're likely right in that your astigmatism probably existed before you started using a PC, and that its symptoms have likely worsened as a result of your time in front of a monitor.

I too was diagnosed with astigmatism a few years before I got my first PC. My eyes are fine otherwise; better than 20/20 in both eyes. I was given a(n expensive) prescription for glasses with prisms in both lenses. These glasses help a lot when I read, and they seem to help initially when I sit down in front of a monitor, but over time they seem to do more harm than good, most likely a result of light from a bright monitor being refracted by the prismic lenses and into the retinae.

As has been said by many other commenters, the best therapy is "everything in moderation": do some PC work, walk away for a bit, rinse, repeat, etc. I know this can be a difficult habit to implement and maintain, especially in the workplace and under heavy stress, but we just have to do it.

  12. 10 most what? on The 10 Most Interesting People in Gaming for 2005 · · Score: 1

"GamerGod rolls out their list of "The 10 Most Interesting People in Gaming for 2005". Is this really a list? Have we deteriorated as a society to the point where someone actually has interest in gaming beyond playing the games themselves, and that there are people of interest in this realm? If this title headed up an empty list, or even fictional gaming characters that have affected the industry, I would have found it amusing. But it doesn't. Instead, why not go for it all: "Mathis's Top 10 Most Righteous Outcomes"? "Tyra's Top 10 Words of Wisdom"? "Top 10 Perfect Matches on TV's 'Wife Swap'"?

  13. Surprised?!? on Microsoft Deal Limits Verizon MP3 Phones · · Score: 1

Anyone who currently owns a Verizon phone/contract should not be surprised in the least by this news. The service provider touts the multimedia capabilities of certain handsets (such as Motorola's e815 and its predecessors), while neglecting to inform the subscriber that these abilities are disabled in their phones. And as a coproration, they aren't exactly apologetic of their shady tactics of drawing in new users. It's a shame that a provider with such feature-rich and widespread network capabilities feels no remorse in deceiving their customers; in this story, at least they are forward in announcing the future limitations implicit in this deal with MS.
