Does Microsoft even know the amount of drivers that ARE NOT signed?? This is stupid and it won't prevent anything. Is Microsoft going to look over thousands of drivers just to make sure they don't cause anything bad so they can put thier little WHQL seal and sign the blasted thing? What's to prevent someone from creating a hack that gets around this? Nothing. Why even try to do something like this? At least give users the option to screw up the system.
Yep. Verified this myself. my podcast e-mail address has dots in it. Sent one to it without the dots and it came to the one with the dots. Tried to sign in to the accounts without using the.'s and it did not work. Google need sot fix this. The story may have a correction, but it DOES happen.
I still think that in some ways Apple is making the wrong move again. I STILL say that within a few short years, Mac OS X will be bootable on ANY Intel machine and Apple will stop trying to fight letting it run on only Mac Intel Machines. I still think Apple may make hardware, but it will always be the super high tech and absolutely georgeous design. Microsoft or someone else will figure out how to get Windows programs running natively on Mac OS X on intel and that will be all she wrote for Microsoft.
I think that there are too many companies who have people who just decide iTunes purchases and downloading of podcasts specifically through iTunes is not a good use of resources, yet we are a educational institution that can have VALID reasons for purchasing music and downloading podcasts. There's a programmer that creates...things that are put into our login scripts to kick off antiviral scans at every reboot, scan inventories and update records at every log in among other things. It's to the point that I never log into the network with my laptop (I just use the ethernet) so that my tools like VNC are still around when I need them. I have no power on what I have on my PC any more because somsone things that X thing is "dangerous" to the network. This is what malware and Windows Bugs has done to a great industry.
Code signing does not address the fact that a criminal who wants to do damage can still do damage. What is the big deal about code signing and what is it setup to fix??
It may have been said but you DON'T HAVE to use iTunes to load music on your iPod. There's EphPod and gtkpod. Granted, iTunes is likely to always work with your iPod and those others are likely to break for a moment when Apple makes updates(or when you buy a new iPod). Don't go bitching about only having to use iTunes to sync your iPod. Try googling before you bitch. That said, I could care less if the title and artist name and album name are the only things transmitted I could care less. If they start sending that it's a unencrypted MP3, we might have more of an issue, but since iTunes still supports unencrypted MP3 as well as letting you create the, well, I don't see it being an issue. It's a NON ISSUE.

OO! NOW I want one. Non-DRM'd PDF is how I get all of my documentation at work and this would be IDEAL for reading it.
Would this include hte new Palm 700w or other Windows Mobile smartphones?? I could care less either way. My regular phone isn't for listening to music. My iPod is. My iPod is far superior to any MP3 playing phone. The only phone that may be better at playing MP3's is a smartphone and if the included software doesn't do it there are plenty of free programs that accomplish the same thing.
I have found the completely opposite. I stared at a CRT for about 8 years and when I got my LCD display at work and have all LCD's at home, wow. My eyes are not near as tired and I am one of the ones who usually have the backlight cranked up. When on the CRT, even when it was running between 85 and 100 Hz, my eyes would really bother me. When I use someone's computer and see the refresh is set to 60 or 75 Hz, I instantly ramp it up to as high as the videocard and monitor can go. The people ask me how I made the monitor stop flickering.....grin. LCD's are simply awesome. No, I don't care what you say!:D Now for watching TV/Movies.....CRT's are king. Every LCD based HDTV I have seen looked like hell.
This is a good comment. I also belive you may have this because *nix can be lumped into one category. The following are Unix based or Unix Like Operating Systems:
Solaris AIX Linux (all of the various distros) Mac OS X Plan9 QNX BSD's (Free, Open and Net)
That's at least 7 different Ooperating Systems that are UNIX based or UNIX like. That doesn't count the countless amount of Linux distros:
Slackware DSL(Damn Small Linux) Red Hat Fedora SuSE Debian Ubuntu Kanotix Arch Linux Linspire Mandriva
and many more. With taht many OS's, it's hard to NOT have more vulnerabilities then Windows.
Granted, sometimes ONE vunerability in say a library that is common on all of the Linux distros would affect all of them but would that be one vunerability or more then one(one for each distro).
I like GRUB too, however I have had several machines where GRUB would refuse to work properly. I switched to LILO on those and it works much better. Also, when you upgrade your kernel the Debian way, it runs LILO for you so you don't have to. The point is that there's room for many bootloaders. Alot of people forget about yaboot for the PPC people. Bootloaders are special enough and they must work reliable enough that there's more then enough room for many different bootloaders. All distros should, at a minimum, ship LILO and GRUB. Sometimes, GRUB just won't work and it's nice to have LILO there to depend on.
By the way, just do a google search.....it's MORE then just religious right people proposing teaching of Intelligent Design. There are many PhD's and non religious people asking it be taught as well...
Either way you stand, I think a intelligent debate on this should be allowed in a classroom setting and it should be touched upon in a science class. If it's never taugh much less researched, then how can evolution be provded as the defacto truth? Can we prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that evolution is a natural process??? No. Can we prove some intelligent species planned all of this? No. Can it be debated in class? Why not? When ID can be presented in a non religious way, then why the heck not?
There are many good points that you have made, however I do not believe that Intelligent Design is weasel words for creationism although they both are essentially the same thing, one can't really point to evolution and say that evolution itself does not have gods hand in it's work. Sure sure, a all powerful god can just poof....get rid of fossil record and change things at will, but it would depend of that's what god wanted to do! Maybe god's just being lazy, or maybe god is leaving this record for a reason?? I don't know. Intelligent Design COULD mean god, but it could mean aliens too. I think all that creationists/intelligent design proponents are asking for is that it also be given class time. One can't point at ID saying that it's non-science because one doesn't have the proof either way. I mean is it possible that everything is the way it is today by random chance? Yes. Is it just as possible a god or other intelligent being influenced how things appear to us today? Possibly. Noone has proof either is true yet. Why not propose both? It IS possible to teach ID with a non religious bent (and likely it would be a very short lecture....).
This is a correct statement. I have found sources that say it is in the establishment clause of the first amendment, yet I have yet to see text of this. If anyone finds this text, please post a link.
Separation between church and state gets so perverted. Everyone thinks it means you can't have any religion in any public service, institution or whatever, however all it really means is the government cannot start a Church if the United States....plain and simple. It doesn't mean judges can't have the ten commandments up or anything of that sort. Unfortunately, people on both sides of the debate have completely and utterly screwed it up.
There in lies the rub. If you accept evolution as a scientific law, then you would be just as guilty as those who say intelligent design is the only answer. Until proven, noone knows the answer. No one can prove that mutations that happen in evolution are caused by god or by natural means. Radiation is naturally occuring and who's to say that god didn't cause the radiation to increase at the right time in the development of say a tadpole to change it to a lizard (or whatever). Some people will say that evolution has been proven and I say that alot of evidence and data has been captured, but not enough to concretely say that it's a fact. Again, you must present BOTH Intelligent Design and Evolution because those qare the two prevailing theories. One can teach intelligent design without bringing the Chrisitian God, Buddha, Allah or whoever's teachings into it. You can just use the term supreme being or a generic god or hell even aliens. I do not understand why the Intelligent Design theory is being dismissed as the Chrisitian right's agenda only. Almost every other religion on the planet believe in a god and that that god influences and controls things on Earth. Intelligent Design is not only a religious teaching.
Alot of this depends on the site and the reader. In both Safari and Sage (firefox extension) Engadget's feed has the front page images and htem some in the feed. So not every feed loooks the same, but agreat many do and that's due to everyone not using the latest RSS spec or all features of that spec.
I always wonder what is the reason to have sellers leave feedback on buyers. I mean as long as you get your money, your happy. You don't get the money, you don't ship the item. As simple as that. Relist it and sell it again. Feedback should only be allowed to be left by people considered a buyer.
I, like most Slashdotters am forced to use Windows as part of my job and I would like to say this. THANK GOD! Jesus does this bug me! Install a program....reboot....install another...reboot! If this really works, then this will save me TONS of time. I like Linux. No reboots unless you upgrade the Kernel.
WHY? Ads have been tried by the free pc people and how many of those are around now? I am convinced that we must be in the beginnings of another nutty web bubble. 2 million to Revision3 and another 2 million to podshow. VC money going to REALLY wacky ideas.....crazy ideas like AD supported OS's? Stupid. A OS is supposed to allow you to run programs and manage the hard stuff that programmers used to have to do when writing for bare hardware. It should not have anothe rlayer of crud on it.
Don't count on this. I think this is way off base and the reason is is in a recent podcast I had someone mention that Leopard is still very ALPHA. It's not quite ready. Sure, hardware could be, but the OS port probably isn't quite there yet.
My god....have I forgotten to surf Trek Web and other sites since there's no new Trek? I remember Michael for the excellent job that he did on Deep Space 9. He will be missed.
