I see some of the zelotenous posts for/aginst the Mac from this comment. Comments like this are not to be read into THAT much. They are not complete arguements. They are simply some points someone feels important, and most, reguardless of position or platform, *ARE RIGHT* from the persepective they were written from. I reiterate, don't read into these that much. Remember, to each his platform.
Everyone, please take off your hats and have a moment of silence for the EvangeList. Not only did they support the Mac in it's time of need, but they taught all of us how to advocate our platform. Guy was always about doing it the "right way." No flames. No attacks. Just simple, polite letters.
It was an institution I'm proud to say I was a suscriber to. I look forward to many years of Linux et al based on the push to be different that came from the Mac community. The List was great support for all of the beligered Mac users.
I understand that it came to a natural demise too. I have been reading less and less of the mailings, and the last few months have piled up unred for the most part for me. I think that's something most of the list community has felt. Now that Apple isn't the butt of everyone's jokes and jabs, it really isn't needed so.
Now if only we could get Wozniak back... WOW! that would be great.
The Mac is Dead! Long live the Mac! The List is Dead. Long live its spirit.
But doesn't opening the bottom of the OS allow other people, like Be to utlize parts of it? Be couldn't complain about being locked out of motherboard information if they can just download the code to drive it. Just like I've seen it pointed out that the base os (Mach, etc) could be ported to other platforms. Especially other PowerPC motherboards. I would hope this fosters some more PowerPC hardware. From what I understand, this all falls within the license. Apple closes Macintosh just to open it back up again. I for one can't wait to play with it. About time to get another Hard drive to put that on...
Humm, two vector engines, 128 bits, all kinds of "extras" on chip. Sounds like a cross between a G4 Alti-vec and a Cyrix MediaGX. Has Sony been making deals?
Oh, yes, and remember with dedicated hardware, it's much easier to reach target polygon speeds. That's why voodoo is so much faster for video than slapping another pentium into your system. (Even dedicated on the video card. I mean, ever heard of such a monstor? Can you say room heater? Good god. I'd hate to see a PIII quad-processor system, dual monitors {if you can find two damn cards that work together, like a mac} with those kind of video cards in them. The case would glow cherry-red.)
IBM making "low" priced PPC boxes is good for everyone. It brings the PPC platform out of the MacOS world, and will hopefully encourage Apple to produce boxes with Be or Linux for sale. It also brings more respect for the PPC processor since it isn't so limited to one OS anymore. Maybe Be will start supporting PPC like it was before Apple (unwisely) discontinued licesing.
I would certinly like to see stronger multiple-os support for PPC so more people can take advantage of it. Definitly the future is going to be about multiple OS's. One size does not fit all.
So I echo, this is good for everyone. Lower prices for PPC boxes will surely come. Broader OS support is likely. Respect is created for the PPC. And, hopefully some good influence on Apple.

My two cents.

Yet I ramble off subject, and make two subjects.
But... Colaboration? Any ideas?
But can you protect the OSes from each other?

Speaking as one tired of Wintel...
Is there any good optical storage medium they can take advantage of? CD's and MO have an incredible storage life.
Maybe they would have to use Laser Disc-sized DVD technology? Any other thoughts?
