I think this is only natural - as time passes the net will reflect the demographic of the outside world. More and more non-tech types will join the net. The fact is most IT, and developers are still men. These were the first people to start using the net.
Dell is happy with the current situation. Why would they stray? They get windows for the lowest price possible, and it kills their competitors. Look at the mom and pop pc stores - They have to pay full price for Microsoft products. This can directly mean $100 difference between their products, and Dell. What do you think most customers will do? Buy Dell of course.
Dell probably is shipping FireFox in the UK becuase they get a buck for every machine from Google -

Finally Authors will get the same feedback that developers get right now. The good and the bad.
I still think it will be a long time before we trust a computer to drive us around. Intersting that it used a 'tailgating' strategy...what happens if all the cars around it are also doing the same!
I have been burned many times in the past by development filesystems, and drivers. It sounds like a great idea, but I am going to wait quite some time before I trust my data with it.
It is difficult for newspapers to stay as current as the web. News websites are able to turn on a dime, and even change their headlines before anyone notices that they are totally wrong;)
I see the day when we will have the same restrictions. Look at the MPAA, RIAA. They are constantly trying to close the "Analog Hole". They want to make it illegal to timeshift. How well do you think your TIVO will work when you can only get the signal via their box. They provide one you say? Guess what happens when there is no competition in any given field? The choices suck.
The big ISPs see this as a way of controlling the market. Right now internet access is a commodity. They will do anything in their power to change this. Even if this means pushing congress to pass anti-terror laws to make it happen. Think of all the things they could do - One example...limit VOIP.
It will only take one company to release blue laser DVD technology that does not have DRM (Even if it is against the law in the USA). The consumers will vote with their dollars. And thus DRM will lose the battle again.
The single largest reason it will never happen:
Microsoft has code in IE that they do not have the rights. This happens all of the time. The chance that they own all of the code is almost zero, and the complications of releasing the source would be way too high to justify.
If Dell does this all over the world it will have a large impact on IE browser numbers. This is the single largest reason IE/Windows has the largest install base. Think how good Firefox needed to be to get people to take the time and download, install and use over IE. Now it is there by default? Man that will be powerful.

Yep. I agree too. USA should do the same.

At any time the US government can reduce the usability of GPS. Why would you want to put the security of your country in the hands of another country?
