For me, I never got a Tivo because of the cost. You need to purchase the equipment and then pay a monthly fee. I believe it is $12.95/month now. I already pay $80/month for cable and Internet access, $50/month for phone, add on heat, electricity and rent and I'm already down a paycheck. I have a DVR at home built with leftover parts and a $40 tuner card that works just fine. I can also move those files between my laptop and any other computer, so I can take my recorded shows anywhere.

On a side note, I did own a Fiero once and it had TERRIBLE problems with the cooling system. On one fateful night, I lost all of the cooling fluid when I was away from home. I was closer to a mechanic than my house, so I drove it there. I live in a hilly town, so I would drive the Fiero up the hill, shut off the engine and coast down, then start it up for the next hill. One time I did this, I turned the key past the "accessories" mode and into the lock mode, locking my steering wheel, going 35 down a hill. I almost needed a new pair of underwear after that and know exactly how stupid and dangerous this is now.

I think it is because it is a silly part of the license. What would you think if you pulled into a gas station and the attendant said "I'm sorry, we can't put gas into cars like yours." They aren't saying the gas won't work, it is just their choice to sell it only to certain car owners.

I know this isn't the exact same situation but I can walk into an Apple store and buy a copy of OS X and go home and install on it on a system that isn't Apple. That should be my choice. I'm happy to give up whatever rights I have for support by doing this but it should be my choice. The same goes for all products. If I buy an iPhone, an EeePC, or a Dell, it should be my choice to mod it in anyway. I paid the money they asked for the product and now it becomes mine. They are willing to share their other software with my Windows machine (iTunes, Safari) so why not let us use their OS? We are paying for a license to use it.

    Just my 2 cents.

The LED lights are already here but like everything else that is new, they are still pretty costly (per bulb that is). One site I found listed both cost and figures on saving.

    http://www.ccrane.com/lights/led-light-bulbs/index .aspx

The figures are from the same people trying to sell you the bulb, so take it as a starting point but they claim their "bulb" lasts for 60,000 hours, using 120 kWh for those 60,000 hours bring the total cost to: $46.95 (@$0.10/kWh)

Cost of bulb ($34.95) + cost of using bulb for 60,000 ($0.10/kWh * 120 kWh).

Compared to an incandescent 60 Watt Light Bulb which only lasts ~1000 hours over the same 60,000 hours costing $400.20:

    (cost of bulbs (60 bulbs * $0.67 each) + cost of using bulb for 60,000 ($0.10/kWh * 3600 kWh)

Google also tells me a fluorescent lamp uses ~1/4 the energy of an incandescent bulb, so that would be approx. $100.05 using the same figures above. The cost savings do add up but I don't know if I can bring myself to paying $35 per LED bulb.

Note: I'm not affiliated with ccrane.com. I just found them via Google.
