Give OpenOffice 3 a try. the links to the beta page should be on their front page. It runs without X11. I personally like it better than NeoOffice and havent had any issues, even though its beta.
these parody commericals need some updating. now when i watch these, i dunno if they are comparing the operating systems or the hardware. I assume they are talking about OSs. But suddenly they start comparing which one can add additional hardware. so are we talking about the hardware now? Then Linux comes in. What the fuck? Now we are comparing the PC compatibles with the computers from Apple to an open source OS?
I hope people see what I mean. If they started comparing Vista to OS X it would make more sense, since software-wise there are alternatives to Macs (come on, they are fucking PCs with a TPM chip in them) and IBM-clone PCs (I shouldn't even use the reference to IBM since theyve gone a long way technology-wise, but what the hell.)
As stupid as it seems when someone who's never used a computer sits down and sees "start" they at least have some idea where to click first. Now the real question... is how will they figure out how to shut the thing down. Assuming it hasn't locked up yet, due to memory access issues or incompatibility with windows generic all-in-one chipset drivers...hmmm. I dunno, heh I've always found it humourous that you have to click start to stop in windows.
And now we see where Windows excelled and why linux has had such trouble catching on.
I guess I'm curious why you say linux is having trouble catching on. Users usually don't have to fuck with linux - but they do use the window manager and/or desktop environment via X11. I don't see you playing around with the NT kernel.
At least with windows pcs you get a universal system that is relatively friendly to new users and can be made for only a couple hundred bucks - Asus and all its ilk. The real question I propose to you, AC, is to answer what is on the Windows shell environment that desktop environments & WMs KDE,GNOME, etc don't have that seems to win over the users? The answer is in the abundant sales of linux minibooks - in otherwords - nothing. (Also, the start menu icon in vista doesn't say "start" anymore).
I think the reason you see windows as easier and more friendly has to do with the same reasons why children have no problem catching on to OLPCs interface, and why adults who have never touched a personal computer in their lives have no issues either. The same reason why the archaic computer scientists were afraid to move a mouse around with their hands, they simply weren't open to a new computing environment, yet ones with a fresh open mindset were. Next time you use another OS, use it with an open mind. Then you might see some of the negatives I an many other people see in Windows.
I have yet to find someone who hates Openoffice.org, especially v3 (beta, if i ts still in that state). i've made many happy with a link to download OOo3 when theyve had it wit Office2k7 for the last time.
A common thing is selling academic licensed software on ebay for the average cost of the retail price thats on ebay. I won't lie, when I was younger I would buy abobe CS(1) (i assume you just bought cs3) for $85-150 and sell them on ebay between $400-600. There were some other software that would only make it an academic version by putting a sticker on it with the specific academic license key. I would just erase the "Academic Edition" with an eraser. So yeah. I did some nonos, but, take my suggestion, find a legal student to buy the software in their name *wink wink* and save some money. I think it's crazy concept that in order to have a PC with effective software on it you need to spend $800 (or whatever vista+office 2007 is right now). I'm a Linux/BSD/Mac user, and quite happy too.
when it came to retrieving the location of a bunch of widely-scattered bits... go ahead, mod me down, but for a second there i thought there was some inside joke referring to his wife in Tackhead's post.
I happen to personally know someone who have every single personal email and email mailing list message printed on paper. Think of getting a stack of 75-100 papers on his desk every morning in his office. All of America isn't tech savy, not yet at least.
Ever since he mentioned that you don't need to start at the beginning in order to get to a certain stage, i've just felt like it will be a bunch of mini-games, without present decisions being made in the current stage affecting your options in future stages of, what i assume, is the evolution of your creature(s). I have a feeling that the expansion pack he's been working on will be a ton better.
XFree86 last updated in August of 2007 so just because the majority of all linux and open source distributions went to X.org doesn't mean its gone. The fact that they haven't said that the project is done for on the site says enough.
Clinton became possessed with demons from an evil slutty succubus intern with a craving for cock while Bush killed some Muslims, praise the lord. It's obvious who's going to hell, hence who deserves impeachment.
(Sweet Jebbus on a stick, I hear this from so many people way too often from my conservative hometown. I dunno where American morality is going these days, but it's definitely in a downhill direction.)
heh, I found out that WoW seems to run a lot better in Mac OS X than in Windows XP. (7600gt) I don't know if it's the amount of resources being used or what, but I definitely boot up OS X to play that game. (FYI this is on a homemade AMD system + purchased copy of Leopard)
Team Fortress 2 is Gold rated and Half-Life 2 is Platinum rated (higher than gold) So running them on OS X shouldn't be a challenge. I might test them out on cider one of these days. The only issue is that (at least for cedega) transgaming uses an older wine build for cedega; i have no clue what build they use for cider.
Heh, atheism isn't something to believe in. Call it a religion if you want, but its the outcome of not joining a religion. As an atheist I support freedom of and from religion all the way. I would be glad to share my code with a Buddhist religious organization, who has no discrimination issues, but I do have a problem helping out an organization that openly discriminates, especially against me. If BSA were okay with atheists but not okay with hindus, then I still wouldn't want to help them.
What I'm saying is things would be different if the religion that the BSA follows didn't contain the discrimination of atheists and homosexuals. I don't care if your local troop is nice to them, it doesn't' change the fact that the head of BSA openly rejects them. In my situation I was kicked out for openly disagreeing with the God concept.
I read some comments about how the BSA is nice to atheists and gay people as long as they don't talk about it, especially when religion plays a role in the organization, so they are really okay. That's bullshit. If they don't want peoples beliefs involved, they shouldn't include it! Without religion, they wouldn't have problems with homosexual people. Telling people to shut up about it and not mention their disagreements with the scout honor and law makes this organization sound like Hilter Youth or something.
What I'm saying is as a "1st amendment thumper" I want an organization to personally follow that amendment as their philosophy. The BSA follow the Holy Bible as theirs. As long as you don't tell someone that you are different, then you are fine. Then, with that in mind, why should the open source community help them? I assume you know the philosophy of open source, not just in coding terms.
Wow. My troop leader "highly suggested" that I quit Boy Scouts when I mentioned that there is no god. Later I was kicked out since I didn't want to quit, and I didn't fully understand how direct his suggestion was.
For some reason as soon as I read "Spicebird" I thought of some gecko-rendered porn content delivery client. think of XULRunner that indexes all of the YouPorn/RedTube type sites of the internet. Yeah I know, I have a twisted mind.
Christ, now I'm scared to use the Open XML API.

(Okay, so maybe I'm looking a little too hard.)
the only difference I can think of is DirectX vs OpenGL. anyone know of the reason behind this?

Sounds like I'm gonna have to call Crucial and demand some 8TB so-dimms when they finally release it.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE I hope someone made a private backup of his stash. We can then bring the site back up on a server in Armenia.

Oh great, you are a homophobic atheist-hating programmer who blesses his source code. Sign up someplace else.
Homophobic closed thinking private organizations shouldn't have friendships with the government.
