So really, how is this new d-pad supposed to fix that?
It might be, you know, better? The purely aesthetic change does not rule out functional changes as well.
That being said, the way they are rolling it out (play and charge only, not part of system bundles) doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in me. I'll wait for some reviews, thank you very much.
Stats: I couldn't find a 2010 "Matrix XR". There's a "Matrix XRS". Heck, let's just assume that they mean the most efficient 2010 Matrix, which is a manual base model that gets 26/32mpg. The 2010 Prius gets 51/48mpg.
..........
The average age of a vehicle on the road in the US today is over 9.5 years and rising.
While I agree in large part with your numbers you should keep in mind that this is a Canadian study. As such, the Matrix XR is trivial to find on the Toyota Canada website and stats about US cars may or may not be applicable.
Let it die already, fast, the sooner we can all go back to enjoying weird little games in baggies, and maybe find something interesting to play as a result.
I'm not sure why you seem to think that these things are mutually exclusive, but there are plenty of great and/or weird games out there, you just have to look for them.
It's not even clear if this information is real. TFA links to a forum post which doesn't seem to actually contain a source of the information (the OP states it's a mix of "hard information" and "conjecture"). Said forum post then links to the eFUSE wikipedia article, which lists Droid X as having an implementation of eFUSE. However, if you look at the Droid X wikipedia page linked to from there, you'll see the original mobilecrunch.com is what is cited for the eFUSE inclusion bit.
I'm not saying there is something fishy going on, but this could easily not be true.
My thoughts exactly.
Probably straight prerendered video.
Keep in mind that the video in the article is over a year old (E3 2009). Presumably, the demo that happened at TED this year was more sophisticated - it's unfortunate that there doesn't seem to be video of that yet.
I mean, why not just do them? Or is this more of a move relating to the stock market? Maybe its better phrased "This announcement will make our stock more competitive".
I guess I just don't understand the motivation.
The Microsoft mentality is oriented towards the corporate world. These kinds of customers require product roadmaps to plan budgets, purchasing decisions, upgrade paths, etc etc. The Apple mentality, however, is oriented towards the consumer. Consumers don't tend to plan all that well and will buy things compulsively, so new products have to be available to ship as soon as they are announced.
In any case, one of the reasons why MS seems to falter in the consumer device market, or at least when competing with Apple, is that they still seem to announce things as part of a corporate roadmap, rather than impressing people with an Apple-like 'one more thing' reveal.
That certainly helps with the Slurpee sales, but it's not at all uncommon to see people walking around with a "Big Gulp" in the middle of winter - it ends up being almost a machismo thing to head to 7/11 on the coldest days of the year just you can walk around in -40 weather (-50 with the windchill), drinking slushies.
Guilty as charged:)
The reason, though, is because slurpees are delicious. Also, please never say "slushie" again.
But I would feel a little silly as a grown man playing a Mario or Kirby game with a wiimote.
FTFY
Seriously, in my dream alternate universe, Nintendo didn't make the Wii (I do like the DS though) and instead we had Mario and Zelda for Xbox/PS3. Of course, they make a ton of money on the Wii, so that's not happening anytime soon.
I'll admit, I do want an XBox 360, and while it's nice the power supply, wifi, and HDD are all now internal, what I am waiting on is blu-ray. I want it more as a media extender/STB more than anything else, primarily for Hulu and Netflix, and possibly for Rockband 3 once the "real" keyboard comes out.
You want it primarily for Hulu and Netflix, but Blu-ray is a deal breaker? I actually don't really blame them for not having it. The direction is clearly heading more into streaming for media - despite having a ps3 (and a 360), I don't own and have never rented a Blu-ray disc, and don't see that changing anytime soon.
That's all fine and well, except the new revision won't be compatible with external hard drives. Sooo...yeah.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure you can just transfer your profile, saved games, arcade games to a regular old USB flash drive and then transfer all that stuff to a new console.
I'm getting really bored with all the hype flowing from Google lately. What with Chrome OS and Google TV, there seems to be an awful lot of fuss being made over what in both cases is essentially vaporware. Anyone having tried the latest Chromium OS builds (the code base from which Chrome OS will be built) will see that this project has a very long way to go before it is anything like usable.
Agreed. I also don't really understand the appeal of Chrome OS - it's only a browser. If this gets you excited, install the Chrome browser and fullscreen it - tadda!
It's a good thing you're here to call out bullshit on Slashdot! I mean, Microsoft contending it invented all this in such a _cowardly_ way...oh wait, FTFA:
Microsoft's research group isn’t the first to work on a sleep proxy – or even the only one presenting sleep proxy research at Usenix – but Microsoft contends that most previous work has evaluated sleep proxies only in small testbeds or simulations.
Phew, so Microsoft Research is presenting a research paper on this subject. Crisis averted.
How about AHA's logos on normal sporting equipment. Footballs, etc?
Probably because there isn't any reason to do so - it's implicit in that the AHA encourages physical activity. Is someone going to see the AHA logo on a football and suddenly realize that it might be healthy to play sports? Doubtful.
Plus, there is the differentiation factor. Is there any reason why the AHA would hypothetically endorse one brand of sporting equipment over another? No, they are essentially all the same from their perspective. The value of attaching the logo to the Wii is that it might cause parents to choose that one over the others available because it's the healthiest choice available i.e. in this case it does matter what they put their weight behind.
So, your advice is to be a quiet, passive-aggressive loner that keeps themselves apart from the group? Please do your coworkers a favor and quit now.
Seriously, though, the cynical answer is always that you aren't at work to make friends, but in my experience work is so much better when your coworkers are indeed friends. I worked several years in tech support while in university and the only thing that made it bearable was the people I worked with. Obviously, you can go too far - you don't want to spend all day talking to people and not get your job done - but the idea that you shouldn't be friendly since you're at work is absurd.
Because when you do that, the current never stops being current. Apple have a habit of forcing old, useless techs out the door... They did it with floppies, they did it with parallel ports, they did it with PS/2 connectors, and now they're doing it with flash.
My motherboard still has a PS/2 connector, but it's not like you can buy PS/2 keyboards anymore. You can push future technology and still not be a douche to everyone using the old stuff.
You keep saying it's not hardware abstraction, and then go on to say how cloud computing abstracts the hardware. Whatever, dude; you clearly get a kick out of lecturing people and talking down to them - I'm glad I don't actually have to work with you in real life.
Btw, are you talking about ScyId? I would get some amusement out of you consistently misspelling what you're name dropping, but it's also possible I just don't know what I'm looking for:)
As opposed to Sergey Brin and Larry Page, who are jointly #1?

You mean to tell me you have to wait for an invitation to a paid for product that's ad-supported? What are they thinking?
That they are Apple?
Of course it's fine if it's your network. It's amazing how people think they can do whatever they want with something that isn't theirs.

For the rest of us, the adults this is not a problem.
We are secure enough to play with the wii and rich enough to own more than one console.
Huh? I own a 360 and PS3, and enjoy Mario, Zelda et all (I have a DS too), but have no interest in motion control.
But I would feel a little silly as a grown man playing a Mario or Kirby game with a wiimote.

Seconded! Sitting through crappy reality shows about fat people losing weight is neigh torture.
Sounds like those fat people might actually be horses.

I posted about that earlier in response to this when it had no comments, but my comment has gone walkies..
Based on the test results, you're lying.

Plus obviously one has to wonder: "If Bing is so freaking great than why is MS paying to have it force-fed all over? .
Google pays Mozilla so that they use it as the default search engine in Firefox. Does that reflect poorly on Google?
I'm not sure why you and everyone else is angry at Microsoft. It's the USPTO that actually awarded them the patent.

1. You can't count.
OTOH, it does echo what everyone else is saying on this site, so it's probably pretty insightful.
