  1. that would be cool on ESR/OSI's letter to Microsoft · · Score: 1

too bad i dont have the spare time :(

  2. Certenly not everthing is correct. on Y2K and Nuclear Weapons · · Score: 1

Tens of billions of chips are built into everything from toasters and video players to bombs and missiles, some programmed to shut down if they misread the date.

ok Video players i understand , missles i understand, but wtf, who in the hell needs a dam IC in thier toaster, and going farther what kind of toaster needs a chip with a date. Last time i cleaned my Toaster, i saw one circut and it consisted of a pair of wiers from the wall, a thermostat and small switch and a heating coil. From that, where dose the Chip come in that needs to make sure its befor the y2K?

if you do have a toaster with a computer inside, i for one say you got ripped off cause you probly payed more that $5 for it, and at least mine will work after the Y2K :)

  3. They won this time on FCC Decides ISP Calls are Long-Distance · · Score: 1

i rember this same sorta thing being pulled back in the prime of the BBS days, they wanted to make calling a BBS like a long distance number. as phone companies said that the calls were using thier equptment too much or some crap. all i see are money hungry bastards. good thing im moving to ADSL

  4. dreaming of the future on Ask Slashdot: How Powerful is Your Computer? · · Score: 1

whell all i can say is when are we going to have the computing power of some of the worlds fastest computers in a laptop. take a look at this on top500.org ,thier amazing. if thoes are the fastest computers, imagin how many pentiums and clones exist, and what if, just what if we installed pvmd on every computer in the world and each had a 1000BaseTX connection to each other and higher with the faster computers, what type of computing power would we have, only we can dream.

whell thats a thought ive had a lot, once i understand how to program for pvm ill take all my computers and all my roomates computers and link them :). i also had a "i rember when" conversation with a friend that was telling me when he was in the army the he was in the first team to use digital equptment :), and i sit hear and play with old AND and NOR gates, and think of how they even made a processor out of them. just my 2cents.

  5. dosnt seem to be soon. on InterNIC to face competition. · · Score: 1

i read something about this befor, but not taking place till 2005. if it happens sooner all the better, cause internic still hasnt registered my domain, been almost a mounth. im about to go to some one else that internic lisens to and have my domain registered that way :(. Hopefuly with this, everthing will change, to next day turnaround, it should be, the computers should process correctly filled out forms, and only incorrectly filled out ones should be reviewed by a human to make out wtf the person ment to put :).
oh whell, wont be soon enuf for me.

  6. sounds good but... on Chaos Theory Applied To Netwok Data Transmission · · Score: 1

Rajarshi Roy, professor of physics at Georgia Tech, reports that he has sent data at 125 megabits per second - more than double what's possible with binary protocols - by using what he has labeled "chaos communications.

Ok, whell thats good and all, but maby he has never herd of OC-3(155Mbs) or OC-12(622Mbs) witch are some of the most common forms for the internet back bone. Also what about 1000Base-BX and the soon to come 1000Base-Tx witch should work over standard Cat5 twisted pair.

while chaos computing sounds good to me, i think it has more to do with the Hardware and OS, then protocals are second nature :)

  7. Slack may not be for everone... on Slackware.com · · Score: 1

But its my fav distro, i run it on 3 of my computers, and i run debian on my alpha. I like it now being BSD strict on the file hericy, and not Sysv 5 strict on the runlevels. i mainly run it becous i find it much easer to hack and make it just the way i like it. With RedHat, when i had it installed on my alpha, i coulnt get it actualy uninstall packages, and i had a hell of a time converting the runlavels the way i like them. i switched to debian mainly for the package managemnt and im still having troble with runlevels. Slackware's configuration is strate forward and nothing extra that you need to worie about. i like a compleetly coustomized system, i like to change the way everthing is. with debian i still cant get it to make files with the .gz .tgz .deb .rpm ect to be colored at the console.

  8. whats to come after this on Toshiba To build Tiny DRAM · · Score: 1

one thing that could posibly happen (i dont know if its possibal) but with smaller RAM sizes, if they get small enuff you could put larger and larger L2 cache with out increasing the die any more on a CPU, that and maby they could cram L3 cache on te chip also. i kmow what 2megs of L3 dose for my alpha. anyway just a thought.

  9. SCSI going away, what ever. on Will Firewire be the death of SCSI? · · Score: 1

AS far as i see it SCSI is not going to go away in 2 years. Ya sure its a little more expencive (actualy a lot), but people going for shear speed and no overhead will shurely stick with SCSI. in fact im going to buy a new SCSI drive today.

however for external use that would be great, not everone has a SCSI controler for you to bring your HD over and copy some data. then again not everone has firewire. If they implement it on all the MainBoards going out in the near future then i can see it becoming a trend. I have a laptop with a 10/100 NIC in it for my portibal needs. This sounds like USB to me, its hasnt taken over my serial devices yet, nothing beats my 8$ mouse, and is thier even a USB ISDN device made?

P.S. yaya i know my spelling sux
