  1. Could be good! on 'The IT Crowd' UK Sit-com · · Score: 2, Interesting

Father Ted is a classic. Black Books is a classic.

Neither really conform to stereotypes of what priests or bookshop workers are like; in fact, the character's job is often a little bit at odds with what they're like. If this is carried over to this show, maybe we'll get a comedy that features some highly eccentric geeks whose actual paid work is secondary to their real love. This is kinda true for many geeks I know; their off-duty coding is far more important to them than their on-duty coding.

  2. Re:But... on Google to Transform Television Advertising? · · Score: 1

True enough. I was going to point out that for family shows where the whole household may be gathered around the TV, how do you work out who to target, as surely you'd want to advertise to the individual with the greatest purchasing power..

But then I realised that if the whole family is in the room, the kids have the "pester power" so the focus isn't so hard to work out :)

  3. But... on Google to Transform Television Advertising? · · Score: 5, Insightful

This could be an interesting idea, but Google's advertising model doesn't translate so well to television. How would you go about compartmentalising viewers into groups, and serving the relevant ad? Sure, you could go on household viewing stats, but that might require extra hardware to get to; and I'm sure some people would object.

Also, it can't be as simple as the article suggests - when you have someone going to Google.com, you can be fairly sure there is one person (usually) behind the monitor. Many many more in front of the TV. How do you weight your targeting?

I just can't see how this would practically work.

  4. Re:Another Code? on 10 Million Nintendo DS Units Sold Since Launch · · Score: 1

It's a tad short (maybe six hours of play time) but it's so well done it's worth the investment. And it really does showcase the capabilities of the DS.

  5. Another Code? on 10 Million Nintendo DS Units Sold Since Launch · · Score: 1

I own a DS (chalk me up in the over 20 category) and I absolutely adore it. The sheer inventiveness of the use of it's native features like the microphone, dual screens and clamshell like opening mechanism are what do it for me. Anyone who's played Another Code: Two Memories (although I believe it was called a number of different things) will recognise this; opening and closing the DS to emulate stamping, reflecting the screens against each other to see a hidden message..

Plus the fact that there are plenty of games, even better ones on the horizon, and that they're all cheap. No, it doesn't play movies or music, but I have an iPod, I don't need another MP3 player - I'd rather have a well rounded gaming system. Which the DS is.

But then I'm probably classified as a screaming fangirl so take it with a pinch of salt ;)

  6. Interesting idea on Interactive Campaigning ala Wiki · · Score: 2, Insightful

.. but this is definitely going to end up counteracting any positive coverage he gains from the site. At best, he ends up with a lot of negative posts from people who support his rivals. At worst, he ends up drowning in noise.

    Also - bandwagon, jumping on?

  7. Sorry? on Windows, Linux 25 Year Old "Clunkers"? · · Score: 1

What exactly does he mean by video internet?

With the growth of high speed Internet services, it's perfectly possible for users to stream video at a fairly nice level of quality. Modern operating systems handle this just fine in general.

Would be nice to have some links though!

  8. I wonder. on Milestones and Trends in Renewable Energy · · Score: 1

I live in the UK and although it would seem that as a nation we are moving (albeit slowly) towards cleaner energy sources, we're not quite so free to make individual use of these technologies. My aunt is currently trying to get three small solar panels installed into her roof and is having to go through a lot of paperwork; planning applications, surveys for the neighbours to make sure they're happy to have them on the street...

Strikes me as strange given that these panels look like a regular three-pane window from the outside, although one with a slightly more reflective surface.

  9. Yet another reason why.. on 360 Disc Scratching Serious Problem · · Score: 5, Interesting

...I won't be getting a 360 til the end of it's lifecycle. It's clearly been rushed out for release to get a perceived edge over Sony (and to a lesser extent, Ninendo). I think that this means that the PS3 and the Revolution will end up being much more rounded, robust consoles - Sony and Nintendo know they're not going to be first to market, so they can afford to spend a little more time getting the consoles right. Plus hopefully there'll actually be a decent number of games available at launch... ;)
