Dude, if you allow this type of functionality to exist in Windows... do you really trust MS that much? I don't. I'm always paranoid they are sending something I don't want them to onto the net, in their hands more specifically. So, if MS controlled a zone alarm type of program, I wouldn't trust it at all....
Tech shortage? Come on, I just graduated from college, and I had a HELL of a time finding a good job in Denver, CO. Why is that so? I'll tell you, it's all the people being brought in from other countries for so damn cheap. I finally found a job, but it's a rare job, and honestly, I don't think I could find another like it. I had to go through a temp agency, and even work on contract to start rather than going full time like I had hoped for. There is a standard being set, and if we're not careful, all IT staff will soon be contract with no benefits!! Can't we join some kind of a union?
Yeah, but I just tried to contact them to let them know about a php coding tip, and here's what I got back: (Looks like their contact info isn't correct)

Alright, I'm a php3 programmer myself, and I noticed a little problem on
your site that's extremely common in php based applications.
"ISA motherboard with 486DX50 (that\\\'s right not a DX/2). 8 30pin 4MB
SIMM slots."
Obivously, this person did not intend to have the \\\ before the 's.
This can be easily fixed in your code using the "stripslashes()"
function. Simply store the post as a string, let's say you called it
"poster". We would then do this:
$poster = stripslashes($poster);
I'm also working on a site that is very similar to your own, it's been
up for over a year now, but it deals with text books for college
students. I was sick of students being ripped off by campus book
stores, so I started:
I agree man, Episode I was annoying as hell. He made it so little kids would understand it, which was how old I was when I was originally watching the first trilogy, so I can't complain about that really. BUT, that computer-based-pain-in-the-ass alien makes me not want to see the next one... Not to mention, I have a DVD player, and would love to buy all the star wars movies, except episode I, on DVD before I'm 50.
I completely agree with: ATI can't write drivers to save their lives and NVIDIA has the best driver dev team in the industry
I mean, I bought an AIW 128 with 32 megs of ram, and kept losing sync with my monitor. I tried all of their fix ideas, none of which worked. Then, I tried their newest driver. Ha. The new driver crashed my system every time I loaded up Unreal Tournament or Quake III. Once again, ATI attempts to correct their problems with a newer driver. Ok, now my machine only boots up into 256 colors, max with a 640x480 res. I was better off with the original crap drivers they provided in the first place. So, I sold the stupid card, and bought a TNT2. I've never been happier, Nvidia writes EXCELLENT drivers for very good hardware. I also bought an ATI TV-Wonder... I've never been so dissappointed in my whole life with a product. Every time I try start the TV program, instead of actual tv, I get a pink screen. I have to resize the window for anything to actually come in. Or, if you move the window off the screen, and then bring it back, you can sometimes get a picture. Also, that's with the latest update of the drivers, which BTW, you can't download! You actually have to order a driver CD from their website because of some lame agreement on their site. In my opinion, ATI blows, and after all the horrible products I've purchased from them, I'll never buy from them again... no matter what these hardware review sites claim their cards can do!
With IM, you just get spammed all the time, and AoL's email is FILLED with spam, mostly XXX garbage. That's not what I want showing up in my mailbox for sure. So, use ICQ! Check out www.icq.com if you've never heard of it. It's free obviously, and I think more people use it. I don't think it would be hard to write a version for *nix, and I think that since AoL has done what they have, we should be expecting a third party to write one, or ICQ themselves... if they are smart that is!
" There are two companies today that hold the
majority of control over where the PC is heading.
AMD isn't one of them, VIA isn't one of them,
and no, Apple isn't one of them either. The
companies are Intel and Microsoft, and their
influence goes further than you think."
What the hell? He thinks that Intel and Microsoft are leading the way? After the first paragraph, I stopped reading.... I'm definitely all about AMD now, more than ever. Did he forget about Sun, Red Hat, Caldera, etc... or is he just "so" impressed by the P4, that he thinks it's the only way to go????
I'm with you on that, it was nice when code wasn't such a legal problem. BUT, I realize that if we didn't worry about it and stand up for our (programmer's) rights, then big companies would just abuse us as usual and do what they wanted with the code. So, up to a point, I miss the old days, but at the same time, I realize that if we didn't worry about it, nobody else would!
Luckily, windows is no longer the only choice..

Like others have said on this topic today, I'm extremely glad that Linux is as functional as it is so I can use it instead of windows. If MS is going to do this, they can kiss their profits good bye, because I for one will take put up with it. As far as Adobe goes, they overcharge for their software in the first place. Hardly anyone can even afford it, so it's not piracy that's hurting them, it's their insane prices. So, can anyone say GIMP? Gimp rules, and it's completely free. So, obviously if more and more people use Linux, Adobe will loose out with Photoshop costing an arm and a leg. Not to mention all the other shareware programs you can download that render graphics as well. So, they are only going to pay for this down the road, and I think we as the customers must show them that we are not going to be bullied!
If you have visited my site, you would see that I'm calling for a boycott of Metallica, and basically the music industry as a whole. I'm not so mad at Metallica for going after their users, as I am at the Record Labels producing a CD for less than $1, then selling them for $20. I'm not exactly asking for free music, just reasonable prices. They are completely talking advantage of the consumer, and the government is protecting them and not us. That's not why the laws in this country were created, they were meant to make life better for all people, not just a select group. Yes, downloading music for free is probably wrong. BUT, if that's the only way the record industry is going to pay attention to our demands for better/lower prices, then damn it, I will do what it takes for the consumer to get a fair shake. If the music industry loses enough $ because of Napster, they might finally pull their heads out and get real about the pricing of music.
Interesting enough, I was not distributing their music, no matter how hard that is for you to believe. Also, if you're going to make a statement like that, why are you afraid to post your name next to it?
Well, atleast I'll give my own name because I can stand up for what I believe.... That's why I created the message board on the site, to find out what people think. It's a free country, so if you think www.screwstaver.com accurately describes your position on this issue, then so be it.
I have created the site ScrewLars.com in response to the senseless banning of Napster users by Metallica, and soon to be Dr. Dre. That image of the banner ad on the metallica site is priceless. Hypocrites....
> When a company delays software that isn't ready you all scream vaporware.
Uh, and I suppose you never want to hear about new software then? I think it's great when I read about stuff like this on slashdot, then I have a clue when it may be released. I also think that when software or drivers come out before they are ready, it sure makes the makers look incompitent or unprepared. Example: when ATI released their drivers for the ATI TV Wonder card I recently purchased, the install part of the software is far from working correctly. This is very dissapointing to me, and I would have preferred not even having the product until it actually works. But, that's just me I guess...
My question is, why are you going after your fans when they are the reason you can even make money playing in the first place? Have you ever considered that the record labels and the music industry itself is making all the money? When a CD is sold for $20 rather than a reasonable level, how do you expect people to not try to get your music for free?
I think that Metallica is invading people's privacy, and that they actually putting commericial interests over privacy, and that's bad, VERY BAD. They shouldn't be going after their fans. They should be going after the music industry, for selling CDs for freaking $20 a pop. If a CD was around $5, I wouldn't waste my time downloading their songs, I would just spend the $5 and buy it. It would be simpler, but I'm in college, and there is no way I can afford those high prices...
They are completely attacking the wrong people in this case, and they will pay dearly for it. I for one will never purchase another Metallica album as long as I live. Up to this point, I do own all but 2 of their albums. In the future, they will not see a dime of my money.
BTW, to the slashdot moderators, I hereby give you full rights to post this submission in a book! All that I ask, is that you DO use my handle or name. I think it would be great if I got something I wrote to be published in a book....
Yes, they are going to release it soon. I'm beta testing Cold Fusion for Linux right now, and it's not quite ready yet. It crashed my Linux box about twice a day as long as I had it installed. That was beta 1 though, beta 2 has seemed more stable. Beta 3 was just release yesterday, and I have yet to try it, but I'm sure it's better. Altough, I know many companies that had purchased CF 4.0, and had to roll back to 3.X because 4 was so unstable on NT. So, we'll just have to see how stable CF for Linux really is going to be.
Dude, if you allow this type of functionality to exist in Windows... do you really trust MS that much? I don't. I'm always paranoid they are sending something I don't want them to onto the net, in their hands more specifically. So, if MS controlled a zone alarm type of program, I wouldn't trust it at all....
